I can honestly say this video changed my life, and has effectively knocked down one of the pillars of my depression:

I'm a bit drunk right now, but please consider doing Esperanto before doing Japanese. I'm a heritage learner of Chinese, a comparably difficult language, but it's quite useful to polish your language-learning skills before jumping in the deep end (Japanese). This is going to take between 4400 and 6600 hours (standard) to finish, just to get to C1 (N2? N1?) proficiency at 10000, and then average Japanese lexicons are between 20000 and 40000 words.

Thanks for stopping by. Japanese isn't my first attempt at a foreign language. In high school and community college I took Spanish up to intermediate level (a solid B1, possibly B2). I lost interest in Spanish, but I have a (small) idea of what a commitment Japanese is, and I suspect it's the language that I will never "finish".

Finishing is technically the wrong word, but reaching high-level proficiency will take quite some time.
