I thought this seemed odd. Generally before bedtime I'm so tired I knit and watch tv--and don't even knit difficult things. Concentrating on a language?

He says that "learning and then sleeping on it" gives you better retention than learning earlier in the day.

I wonder if anyone else has done research on the best study times.

The article in Quartz by Duolingo's research person: https://qz.com/1215361/the-best-time-of ... ingo-data/

Edit to add: Based on 6 placement tests, none official, I've finally reached the bare bottom of A1. One place put me at A1.1 implying I've got 9 more slots to go before reaching A2. Whatever. I'm taking it. :D

This is now the last month of tax season, so I'll mostly just be doing Memrise when I can until mid-April, depending on how my schedule goes. This is probably my last full day off until the 19th or 20th of April. :P

My next plan is to challenge myself to 100 hours starting May 1st and also start the Super Challenge--probably half as I'm limited in how many books I have in German, and anything I watch will have to be on youtube.

I'll be getting back to serious-time German on the 23rd, so I did some Super Challenge/6 Week Challenge prep this morning before I get back to work.

For the Super Challenge, I have 1884 pages that I'm sure I can read, 1423 pages that I can (slowly) read, and probably at least 1000 more (not counted yet) that I can't read but either hopefully can later this year or can read slowly with a dictionary. For the film part, I'm still working that out--probably lots of Youtube or videos at language sites.

For this 6 Week Challenge, I have 2 goals: 100 hours and to track it in this log. I want to make some serious progress this time and I'm hoping the extra accountability of having to state what I did each day will push me to do more.

Dusting off my log in preparation for the 6WC. I'll probably start logging my time this Friday or so--nothing like starting the 6WC and forgetting to keep track of your time!

I'm having fun reading the Facebook learning German group posts. Yeah, most of them are "teach me" or "I like older women" but there's been some really interesting posts about doch and various words that people have trouble with, with a native speaker stepping in and really breaking it down.

I actually changed my hours so I don't have to work on the 1st this time--apparently I think I'll be starting with a bang.

Just read a blog post (link below) about transcription. I know that's come up here before (the Output Challenge--need to check) but I've never really looked into it before.

It reminds me a lot of an exercise in my Spanish class a long time ago--used to make me crazy, but it really worked.

I'm going to try it for German. I'm thinking that something on Youtube would be easiest as I can pause and replay so much easier there than anywhere else.

I was looking into doing something like this, but I can't afford the time currently (it takes so much time). I was probably planning to use a programme to help add subtitles and maybe use it to try and add subtitles to youtube videos. I started, but it took forever to even get through tiny amounts of time, so I've put it aside until exams are done. I'll be intrigued to hear how you go.

Thank you, MamaPata--I'll let you know how it works.

As far as the Output Challenge--I'm horribly behind because of the whole "OMG I'll write/say it wrong, so stay quiet" thing I seem to have going.

And then I discovered--the Facebook language group--the weird one with all the people half-way learning German and half-way looking for women--they don't care if I make a mistake. People post all kinds of things--correct, wrong, horribly wrong--and nobody cares. Somebody posts a correction and we move on to the next post. So I'm staying with the group and am committing to post at least several times a week.

6 Week Challenge!! Not sure why I get so excited, tho.

Previously I used to post my totals at the end of the day, but this time I'm going to post at lunchtime--today, for just this morning, and then for each 24 hours. I don't think I'm going to split up all my time on the Twitter bot--did anyone really read it anyway?

Day 1--Duolingo, 15 min. Memrise 93 min. Textbook (#2, ch. 7) 70 min. FB 5 min. Total for day: 183. Total: 183

I really like the changes with the crowns in Duolingo, so I'm going to stay with that. Memrise--I'm currently in 7 courses, and I only kept up with a few during the break, so LOTS of reviewing today and tomorrow.

FB is my Facebook German Friends group. This morning I started a post!!! I made a statement, then asked a question. Several people answered, and we went back and forth. One person slid into English, another into Greek. But I responded to several people and understood every response. (We're all beginners in the group, so nothing difficult was posted.) I don't think I can start a post every day, but I can certainly respond to others.

Off to lunch, then either a bit more of the textbook or get back into my reader. Plus my vocabulary cards. Got to make my day off count! :P

6WC: Textbooks 150 min. (#2, chapt. 7, #22 chapt. 5) Duolingo 18 min. Memrise 30 min. Today: 198 Total: 381

Odd thing happened while I was reviewing some words on Memrise. I saw the word in English, thought "I totally don't remember the word" while I was typing it in German. I wonder if that works in conversation, too.
