Christi wrote:Wow, those Glossika Korean sentences look very random haha. How does it work? Do they explain grammar and then show you a lot of sentences to listen to?

Also, wish my country's Netflix offered more Korean shows so I could also use the Language Learningwith Netflix extension. It seems like such a great resource!

Hi Christi!
Glossika is basically random sentences, but you do a quick level test first (I actually enjoyed it, good test of my Korean listening comprehension!). Then you get 5 sentences that repeat abt 5 times each. When you are done you get new sentences. You can skip the repetitions if you feel the sentences are too easy. There aren't grammar explanations per se but they have a free blog with alot of grammar etc.

I honestly wouldn't get glossika for korean alone because kpop and kdramas are good enough for listening comphrehension for me, but it was fun to test my knowledge and learn random new sentences!

For Korean AND French AND icelandic, it was worth it coz then I could learn 3 languages for the same price :)
It's a little pricey though, I'll try one month and see how it goes :)

In terms of Netflix - yes it's a great resource!! :) Can you get Viu in your country? It's a great source of dramas :):)

No, I can't. I occasionally use Viki, but it's hit or miss to find out which shows have dual subs. I've been watching mostly shows with only English subs, but perhaps I need to take a look at all the new stuff that came out recently and check if any have dual subs.

I have a trick for that.

First go to a drama you already know has korean subs. Then change your preferred subtitles from english to korean.

Then, go to Viki's main page. Click the "Explore" tab on the top-left of the page. It takes you to a "Search Engine". Choose "Korea" in the "Countries/Regions" category and "Korean" in the "Subtitles" category.

There you can see a list of korean programs (mainly dramas) that have korean subs. Click on any that you want and on the right side, where the episodes appear listed, click on "SEE ALL". This way you'll have an overview of all the episodes of the drama and you will be able to see the percentage of korean subs for each episode. That way you can decide if the drama has enough korean-subbed episodes for your purposes. ;)

One month of regular non shift work is coming up! 7am-6pm (hopefully?) and weekends off!

In preparation, I spent half of my day off today on French :)
- booked 2 italki classes for this upcoming month!
- assimil 50 and 51 passive wave, and 1+2 active wave --> interesting idea this active wave...
- FSI basic 3-1 dialogue
- coffeebreak french s2 lesson 28 - getting a taxi
- wrote a short post on lang-8
- 1 news broadcast from RFI:
https://savoirs.rfi.fr/fr/apprendre-enseigner/langue-francaise/journal-en-francais-facile
this looks really good! although my comphrehension isnt exactly 100%, it's helpful to look at the transcript (plus a translated version) side by side and just listen through 1 round. it's also helpful for keeping up with world news!

That's a lot for one day! For me at least.

my aim for this month, setting the bar low
- 4 italki classes
- try to get to assimil lesson 60, together with the corresponding active wave to lesson 10?
- 1 RFI news broadcast (or ballades podcast) per week
- maybe get back on the duolingo wagon?

update on the past month!
had total of 4 french classes so far on Italki!

2 with Tom - https://www.italki.com/teacher/1342497 - best so far, i like how he records his voice immediately then downloads it onto Teachee then I can download that deck into Anki. yesterday he was v strict with the pronounciation but i definitely need it!
He sets very specific goals so for me currently we are working on taking a medical history in French~ it was good fun and so helpful for real life! "we will do some blood tests and it will take one hour..." something i say literally daily x 15 haha.

1 with Lea - https://www.italki.com/teacher/2921308 - great as usual but I feel her lessons while fun, are a touch too difficult for me - she plays a video which i dont -quite- understand but then she goes through it slowly with me with games and is nice about my sputtering french haha

1 with Camille, not bad! with google docs and all (i love italki teachers who use a running google docs!) but it was just a trial lesson, so will have to see how (plus next month i dont have much time..)

Currently my French studying consists of
- anki decks with asssmil - either i record that audio phrase with my voice or use the assimil audio
- and learning french through crossfit! so i'm very into crossfit lately and just joined a crossfit box in my hometown, and am following the crossfit sanctionals which just started
after much poking around i found the youtube home of the crossfit french throwdown https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBI5PLTj60CtotBsr0Gf-GQ which has not only crossfit videos to watch for inspiration, it has some interviews/ links to french crossfitters youtube channels/ the workouts in pDF (with french and english instructions).
it's great inspiration for both crossfit and french!

learning phrases such as: L’athlète démarre devant sa barre chargée sans la toucher
- clearly essential haha

aim for december 2019
- reach assimil 60 finally (plus lesson 10 in active wave) + anki decks + recording my own voice
- 2x italki lessons
- watch and translate 2 french crossfit videos!

French
25th Nov: italki class on present tense with Lea
30th Nov: got season 3 and 4 of Coffee Break French on sale! :)
1st Dec: 730am French class on italki with Tom! More medical French!
3rd Dec: Assimil 52-58 (passive wave)
4th Dec: L’avis de Marie podcast ep 149

Also currently at a 5 day streak on duolingo!

To do list:
Assimil 3-8 active wave
Asimmil 59-60 passive wave
Lea’s present tense verb homework (with nearly 100 questions!!) [I’m currently halfway through…]

Icelandic
4th Dec
- Glossika Icelandic - 10 new sentences
- Revised chapter 1 of Colloquial Icelandic

Korean
- Re-tested myself on Glossika - purely on listening I reached B2 level! (based on glossika's testing algorithm, i'm under no illusions about my korean abilities hahaha)
This makes sense though, since I watch a lot of Korean dramas/ varieties/ listen to Korean songs?
I also bought Sogang 4A and 4B reccently!
Aiming to finish Sogang 3b book... by end of 2020??
Haha

Conservative aims for language learning in 2020
French: 1 French italki class per month. Try to work my way through Easy French Step by Step... it has 16 chapters so to reach chapter 8?? Reach Assimil lesson 80? And plus Active wave to lesson 30? (hahaha)
Icelandic: Get to A2 on Glossika, try 1-2 italki lessons
Korean: Finish Sogang 3b book and start on 4a book! Attend 1 crossfit class in Korea - thinking of trying out 4TP!

Dec 19 language learning progress (ie minimal)

uHHH work has been crazy. like literally mindnumbingly busy.
BUT happily, i had a few spare minutes to do the below:

26th dec: 2 kwiziqes + 2 learn french with alexa videos
27th dec: watch the entire 6 eps of home for christmas on netflix (30mins x 6) with french dubs + eng subs. good ear training for how french sounds! it's a good idea to watch french dubbed netflix since chilling with netflix is THE best post work chilling EVER haha.

30th dec: coffee break french season 3 ep 4
finally made it to season 3 of CBF!!
admittedly i skipped some episodes here and there in S1 and 2, but I'm actually really enjoying S3 so far, and I can understand the passages especially with the breakdown and explanation (bought the members version so got the pdfs), so that's working out well! Learning a lot of useful new expressions too.
Also revised CBF s2 ep 13 and 14 - perfect tense! And did some corresponding exercises in Easy French Step by Step for Perfect Tense.

According to Spotify's year wrapped, i apparently spent 158mins listening to podcasts (ie coffee break french this year!) which is awesome! 158mins of French!

Happy hols and happy new year guys :)

Signed up for news in slow French! Listened to the entire most recent episode #461. Thereby fulfilling my dream of listening to French news :)

New vocab I've learnt so far:
Hebdomadaire = weekly
Auditeurs = auditors/ listeners/ audience
Nous discuterons = we will discuss
Gros titre = headlines
Gazoduc = gas pipeline
Nous aurons = we will have
Citoyens = citizens
Siffler = whistle
Harcelement = harassment
Dans le monde entier = all around the world
Soupconner = suspect
Est largement soupçonné = is widely suspected
Meilleur choix = best choice
J’ai deja entendu parle = I have already heard
Forcement - necessarily/ certainly
Honnete - honest/ fair
Ca fait réfléchir = it’s thought provoking

Also re-signed up for Kwiziq French
Did an A1-A2 star wars fill in the blank quiz!
Super fun.

'Il y a bien longtemps, dans une galaxie lointaine, très lointaine...'
a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away

I am realizing that if the source material is interesting to me, I am wayyy more interested in learning the language from that material (well duh.) And also that grammar is good to reinforce but listening to passages in french and then reading the parallel translation plus looking up the phrases and words i dont know is 2x as fun as just pure grammar. I probably will never make my way methodically through any coursebook or grammar book because I honestly learn french too sporadically... but nevertheless this piecemeal learning is still fun, and at least there is SOME language learning even if it's not super structured.

I still aim to finish easy french step by step one day hahahah maybe can aim to finish it by end of 2020!
Happy new year's eve all :)
