French
Wednesday 13/2/19
- Caught up on duolingo french lessons
- Watched tons of random French youtube videos, and chanced upon a really cute children's cartoon called Caillou en français! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWDcA6hHizU
I think I learnt abt 21 new vocab words just from watching the 5 min youtube video alone, not to mention Caillou is super cute being a toddler!
- Many kwiziqes
- checked out the free version of Ilini which was really good too! https://www.ilini.com. Just from 1 video I learnt 17 new vocab! Watched 1 video on studying abroad and another on the Winter Olympics. Really nice variety of videos with a range of topics that interest me.

The 365 day challenge is proving quite helpful in making me do SOME language study per day, i've managed 9/13 days this month! Which is ok, not full marks but I think pretty ok given my crazy shift work hours haha.
Sticking to podcasts I can listen on the way to work and back and things I can chill out too like French Cartoons is helpful.

Well, to be honest I'm probably not doing loads and loads of French grammar homework nor am I going to reach b2 in 1 month this way, but at least its a way to destress from life and to work a different part of my brain. Which is all that I need from language learning anyway :)

Oh did I mention, I hit 91% for the A0 level for Kwiziqes and 51% for the A1 level! So I'm around A1 level for French now (?) as per Kwiziq :)

Hello guys! It has been awhile.

I'm still stressed out from work but taking a little bit of time for relaxation to study Icelandic! I love Iceland and have been there twice, so it seemed perfect to try learning the language :)

Resources i'll be using
- Italki as usual :)
- Memrise Icelandic Cource
- Textbook: Colloquial Icelandic

random other resources
https://blogs.transparent.com/icelandic/tag/icelandic-lessons/
https://www.alarichall.org.uk/teaching/modern_icelandic.php
http://tungumalatorg.is/viltu_laera_islensku/en
https://icelandiconline.com/

Any reccomendations from anyone who has learnt icelandic before?
So far I've just learnt the simple stuff e.g days of week and random vocab and hello my name is etc.

Then next month will hopefully start italki lessons!

Just an update on the long-forgotten French and Korean due to the craziness of life...
in June i went to Korea for a conference and was able to chat to many fellow Korean EM docs in Korean! About Pediatric Toxicology! OK, I mainly said hello would you like to have a look at our booth, and take a quiz? But it was very fun to chat and they seemed to understand me!

I occasionally speak French to little kids at work - for fun, they clearly understand English haha. But it helps to break the ice a little I think?

I don't really think learning Icelandic helps work to be honest, unless I am ever lucky enough to work in an Emergency Department in Iceland, but it is definitely very fun :)

Have many happy memories of eating lamb soup in Reykjavik, wandering around Eymundsson bookshop and having cinnamon rolls at Sandholt Bakery on a cold rainy day!

So do I! They are part of a sort of language immersion program where the employees are committed to speaking to you in Icelandic if you speak Icelandic to them, so when I was in Reykjavik for an Icelandic course, I would go there to do my "real life" assignments (recording a conversation in Icelandic). Of course, I also did all the stuff I normally do in a bookstore - and brought half the bookstore home with me when I left :D

Hello all! Thanks for the icelandic learning tips :)
I'm currently post night shift and have worked my way through a bit of memrise and the 1st unit of Colloquial Icelandic. It's so far quite good, I'm mainly focusing on vocab so not get stuck into grammar like I did with French haha.

So finally caved in and bought Glossika!

I'm actually really enjoying it for revising Korean and French and learning Icelandic! It's abit expensive but I like how it just gives bite sized sentences. Great for a 5 mins break.
Did about 15 Icelandic sentences, 25 French sentences and countless Korean sentences (and tested into b2!)
Does anyone know if the Glossika level matches the CEFR levels?

As always, my Korean listening skills are great thanks to kpop and kdramas :)

The 1st 3 Korean sentences also greatly amused me:
Are you contagious?
옮았어요?
I'm dehydrated.
탈진했어요.
I'm allergic to bee stings.
저는 벌침 알레르기가 있어요.

Yesterday I signed up for the short story challenge and read 2 short stories in French! Learnt loads of new vocab.

Also did some duolingo on the bus from one hospital to another today.

Today I subscribed to netflix - well the free trial at least. (primarily for language learning purposes). Tried out Language Learning with Netflix which works brilliantly!
https://languagelearningwithnetflix.com/

Shortlisted several films/shows to watch
- Marseille
- A very Secret Service
- Chef’s Table (France)
- Journey to Greenland

Currently watching blade runner with French Audio haha

Actually there is such a wealth of language resources, just not enough time to spend on them (while working and studying and doing research!)

Wow, those Glossika Korean sentences look very random haha. How does it work? Do they explain grammar and then show you a lot of sentences to listen to?

Also, wish my country's Netflix offered more Korean shows so I could also use the Language Learningwith Netflix extension. It seems like such a great resource!
