I am an American who has been living in Francophone Europe the past six years. I apologize in advance for my excessive use of parentheses.

Parentheses: because of Francophone influence? And if so, why? I, personally, wrote too many parenthese-esque sentences because of Latin influence (and other reasons) in the past.

Both! The two above were from a giant box of children/young adult books I just received. All of those are vocalised. I read a lot of news, which is unvocalised, and was reading Harry Potter which was also unvocalised. How about you?

I clicked on this log in passing, and I’m so happy I did! I’m enjoying following your journey, and as I’ve just started Darija myself, I’ll be scouring every post for tips and resources ! So far, I’ve been unable to find any really comprehensive Darija resource (or teacher who can accommodate my schedule). Native speakers have been helpful where I can find them, but people usually only have the time to teach the odd phrase here and there.

I'll put together a list of beginner resources in Moroccan Arabic for you today. There may not be as many easily-digestable sources out there as there are for the more popular languages, but Moroccan Arabic secretly has a looot. Of course, after your studies in Circassian, finding Moroccan Arabic material probably feels like a cake walk.

Maiwenn has almost all of the resources that I also have had a look at, but there is one book that is missing from the collection that I feel is excellent, Curso de árabe marroquí by Francisco Moscoso García. And this online version of the Diccionario Español-Arabe Marroquí, a free, quite comprehensive dictionary by the same author.

I agree that for an Arabic dialect, there is quite a lot of resources, and with the coming years I imagine there will be even more. Luckily for us!

Happy New Year!!!

My partner and I drove down to Genova, Italy to spend the last few days of 2018 in the sun. Our goal was nice weather and good food and we succeeded on both counts. But ohhh how I am wanting to learn Italian now. It was enjoyable to see how much we could understand and say (poorly, I imagine). I actually have a copy of Assimil Italian with Ease (a Christmas gift from probably over a decade ago), so I'm considering giving that a go. After watching the sun set on 2018 in Imperia, we continued on to Nice. On the first, we joined all the other people with good intentions for 2019 and went for a run on the Promenade des Anglais. We were approached by one of the major French networks to be interviewed about our résolutions. I quickly hid behind the camera. After they'd interviewed my partner, they swivelled back to me and I could only squeak out a "non!" and run away. I've been interviewed by French television before and know from experience it goes poorly for me. (Undoubtedly would be the same for anglo television, but no one's ever tried.)

We're back now, after watching the temperatures drop from 17 to -3 as we drove North. Alas.

Back to chipping away at the Super Challenge and my B1 Arabic coursework. Chip. Chip. Chip!

I really don't understand attempts of persuasion like these. Does something like this tend to happen rather often there?

Often? Thankfully not. The other time was at a protest in Paris in which they were actively seeking out people of my nationality who spoke French to interview. This was by a news outlet, so I think they would not have even started filming me if I hadn't already consented. This more recent attempt was at the Place Masséna in Nice (very popular, so they could be sure to find plenty of interviewees) and we were visibly dressed for a run (so we were likely targeted by the interviewer as potential interviewees with New Year Resolutions). In this case, the interviewer was from a popular, non-news-oriented channel and he was clearly just looking for sound bites.

Luckily, I don't think we ended up being interesting enough for inclusion. In any case, the episode did not ruin our enjoyment of the nice Nice sun.
