2018 Language Goals

General:
Read 52 books (preferably over half of which will not be in English).
Daily journaling in French, German, Arabic.

Arabic (MSA, Moroccan Darija):

GOAL: Improve speaking.
How: Output challenge! Every week, I will think of anecdotes, news, etc, I would like to tell/discuss with my in-laws. I will then record myself practicing them ahead of time. Sometimes you have to practice in order to be spontaneous. ;) I will also strive to have 2 skype lessons/month, hopefully more, but this is budget-dependent. Keep speaking with my partner. Order in Arabic from my favorite Syrian place.

GOAL: Read a book.
How: I will read a book. Hah... but seriously. I plan on reading a full-length book in Arabic this year even if it takes me the full 12 months.

GOAL: Improve listening.
How: Use Al Moukhtarat and Al Jazeera's learning articles for intensive listening. I will aim for at least 1 article per week. For extensive listening practice in MSA, I will watch at least 30 minutes of news each week. For Darija, I will watch one Moroccan movie/week for extensive listening practice. For intensive listening practice, I will use the recordings/videos sent by my teacher.

GOAL: Improve vocabulary, deepen grammar.
How: In addition to all the other activities, work my way through some of the (many) MSA books I have and sign up for the B1 Arabic correspondence course in April. For Darija, I will complete the Chekayri book.

German:

GOAL: Improve vocabulary.
How: Reading! I hope that at least 4 of the books I will read this year will be in German. Lords knows I have enough of them that need reading. Additionally, the writing output challenge should help me to identify where my vocabulary needs improvement.

GOAL: Write.
How: With the output challenge, I'll be aiming for 1000 words a week (leaving that bit of wiggle room for when I will inevitably fall short).

GOAL: Improve grammar.
How: Finish Teach Yourself Improve Your German. Begin and complete Assimil's Perfectionnement Allemand. Clozemaster.

GOAL: Improve listening.
How: At least one Arte Journal in German per week. Listen my way through the backlog of German audiobooks I have acquired over the years.

Brun Ugle hat mich inspiriert! Ich werde versuchen, mein Log aus Deutsch und Arabisch zu schreiben. Sie können noch mich schreiben aus Englisch oder Französisch (oder anderen Sprachen natürlich)! :)

Letzte Woche war noch mein Urlaub, also hatte ich nicht so viel Zeit meine Sprachen zu üben. Ich habe natürlich auf Arabisch mit meinem Mann gesprochen. Ich habe auch auf Arabisch geschrieben. Ich war sehr froh dafür, weil mein Mann könnte meine Schreibung korrigieren. Ich habe weniger Fehler gemacht als ich dachte! Ich schreibe auf „Fusha“ Arabisch und auf Darija. Ich finde es einfacher auf Fusha Arabisch zu schreiben als auf Fusha Arabisch zu sprechen. Ich kenne viele Wörter schreiben, aber nicht wie man sie ausspricht! Auf Arabisch sind die kurzen Vokale nicht geschrieben. Die Aussprache auf Fusha und die Aussprache auf Darija sind verschiedene! Ich kenne besser die Aussprache auf Darija. Diese Woche werde ich meine Unterrichten mit einem Syrer anfangen. Ich muss mein Fusha vor dem Unterricht üben.

Ich las mein erstes Buch von 2018. Es war „Partir“ von Tahar Ben Jelloun. Tahar Ben Jelloun kommt aus Marokko und er schreibt auf Französisch. Seine Bücher sind sehr gut. Vor „Partir“ habe ich „L'Enfant de Sable“ gelesen. Die Beide befassen sich mit sozialen Fragen. In „Partir“ finden wir „Azel“ einen jungen Mann der nach Europa gehen will. Er studierte Jura an der Universität, aber er fand keinen Job in Marokko. Endlich trifft er „Miguel“ der alles ändern wird. Das Buch ist sehr traurig…. „Partir“ und „L'Enfant de Sable“ sind zwischen Realität und Fantasie. Das erinnert ein bisschen an „1001 Nächte“.

Heute morgen war ich fünf Stunden in Paris. Ich dachte, ich der Bibliothek von „Institut du Monde Arabe“ besichtigt würde, aber ich hatte vergessen, dass es Montag geschlossen ist. Schade. Also bin ich stattdessen gewandert. Später, nahm ich einen deutschen Zug, aber leider habe ich kein Deutsch gehört. Eine Frau, die neben mir saß, sprach aus Arabisch!

بدأت الدروس باللغة العربية الفصحى اليوم. أستاذي كان متأخرا قليلا و جلس في مقهى. من الصعب سمعتُه، لأن كان هناك الأصوت الكثير. درسنا القادم سيكون يوم الثلاثاء. قبل ما، سوف أشاهد فيديوة. مع أستاذتي المغربية، أتكلم كثيرا باللغة العربية المغربية. الآن أحتاج إلى الكلام العربية الفصحى. أريد دأيما ان استعمل الكلام المغربية. سوف أتعلم بنفس الوقت الكلام السورية. استاذي لطيف و ذكي! هو يتكلم سبع اللغات. تعلم اللغة الإنجليزية في سنة واحدة. الآن يعيش في الالمانيا إذا يتعلم اللغة الالمانية. بعد درسي، انا متعبة جدا.
وجدت سلسلة جديدة: « مكمافيا » و عندها الصوت العربي. بدأت مشاهدة هذه سلسلة باللغة العربية مع ترجمة باللغة الإنجليزية. حسنا.

And now an English translation of what I intended to say:
I began my MSArabic classes today. My teacher was a little late and was in a café. With difficulty, I heard him, because there were many voices/a lot of noise there. Our next lesson will be Tuesday. Before that, I will watch a video. With my Moroccan teacher, I speak a lot of Moroccan Arabic. Now I need MSArabic words. I always want to use Moroccan words. I will learn at the same time Syrian words. My teacher is very nice and smart. He speaks seven languages. He learned English in one year. Now he lives in Germany so he is learning German. After our class, I was very tired.
I found a new series: McMafia, it has Arabic audio. I started watching the series in Arabic with English subtitles. Great.

Arabic level and breakthroughs

I found an Arabic placement test (in French) from the Institut du Monde Arabe. https://www.imarabe.org/fr/activites/co ... tionnement Apparently I’m „Intermediate“ where intermediate means A2. (Advanced is also „A2“ so I’m not sure if they’re calling it that because of the book they’re using or if they just have their own special meanings for intermediate and advanced….) I had been vaguely considering doing one of their stages intensifs (30 hours of class in a week), but I’m not sure it’d be worth it for me. This was mostly because I was thinking back on when I did such a workshop in Breton and how much I enjoyed it. Perhaps if the workshop were actually where I live…. Cost-wise, it’d be far more reasonable to just fly down to Morocco for a week and do a week of immersion with my in-laws (like, it’d be less than a third of the price…). It looks like that won’t be happening, however, until August. This gives me loads of time to improve so that I can take full advantage of my visit. Skype lessons are decidedly a better investment than the workshop.

Largely due to Clozemaster, I have had a breakthrough with Arabic. Clozemaster has forced me to train reading sentences with new grammatical structures and new vocabulary. It has reinforced a lot of vocabulary I studied and „knew“ and has given me a better feel for structure. On a whim, I decided to try to read the start of the first Harry Potter book in Arabic (the new translation whose sample is available on Amazon). I was delighted to realize I could read it with only a little difficulty. A year ago, I had tried the same (with the old translation) and it felt worlds away. Reading and listening to Al Moukhtarat articles is also helping. I find myself picking out more words when I have Arabic news on in the background.

Letzte Woche

Ich habe fast nichts mit Deutsch gemacht. Ich habe nur die Nachrichten und Arte gesehen. Vielleicht habe ich ein bisschen gelesen… ich glaube nichts. Meine „Sprachzeit“ war sondern für Arabische. Ich begann mit einem neuem Lehrer. Früher habe ich nur Kurse in marokkanischem Arabisch getan, letzte Woche hatte ich zwei Kurse in marokkanischem Arabisch und ein Kurs in Fusha/libanesischem Arabisch. Ich wollte, dass ich am Anfang nur Fusha mit meinem neuem Lehrer tue, aber er hat andere Ideen. Ich muss mehr schreiben…! Mein Output Challenge beginnt nicht wunderbar. ;) Schon zwei Wochen….

p.s. A last thought. For what it’s worth, as an American living in various parts of Francophone Europe the past 6+ years, I have never had someone refuse to speak to me in French…. Certainly, when traveling with my family, waiters do often greet us in English (having heard us speak English amongst ourselves), but they switched to French when they heard us respond in French. This includes both of my parents with their very accented, grammatically-incorrect, stilted (but oh so earnest) French. Do not be discouraged, your efforts in French ARE worth it.

Du bist immer willkommen, Brun Ugle!

Gestern war mein Arabischkurs annulliert. Leider war mein Lehrer krank. Also habe ich TalkinArabic.com benutzt. Ich bin seit elf Monaten zu dieser Site abonniert (ich habe ein einjähriges Abonnement gekauft). Es ist nicht… toll für Studenten, die marokkanische Arabisch studieren, aber es ist super für Arabisch aus Libanon, Jordanien, Syrien. Es gibt eine Reihe (audio + pdf), die erklärt Videoclips von Fernsehshows. Ich habe eine Episode gehört. Ihr Videoclip war von „The Female Show“. Ein Mann und eine Frau sprechen über ihre Nacht. Sie haben ein kleines Kind (ein Baby), das nicht gut schläft. Die Frau wachte auf, ihr Mann nicht. Die Fernsehshow ist ein bisschen wie „Scènes de Ménages“ in Frankreich. Später habe ich die Episode gefunden und gesehen. Ich verstand nur wenig ohne die Erklärung von TalkinArabic. Levantinisches Arabisch ist sehr neu für mich. „The Female Show“ ist aus Jordanien und es gibt viiiiele Episoden in Youtube. Ich denke, ich werde noch andere Episoden sehen.

Hier gibt es die Folge, die ich gesehen habe.

Danach fand ich Mamnou3, eine Webserie aus Libanon. Sie hat Untertitel aus Englisch und ist SEHR komisch. Ich finde, es ist ähnlich wie The Office. Ich habe schon alle die 10 Episoden gesehen. Jede Episode ist nur acht oder neun Minuten. Sie sind perfekt. Ohne Zweifel werde ich sie wiedersehen!

Jetzt bereite ich mich auf den marokkanischen Arabischkurs von morgen vor. Wir werden Internetsucht diskutieren. Meine Lehrerin hat mir diese Videoclip geschickt: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZq5-tSSuFM

Ein Wochenende in Deutschland A Weekend in Germany

Ich habe letztes Wochenende in Stuttgart mit einer Freundin verbracht. Ich bin Freitag Abend gegangen, aber ich bin vor meiner Freundin angekommen. Also musste ich selbst im Hotel einchecken. Normalerweise in Deutschland spricht man mit mir auf Deutsch… außer in Hotels! In Hotels, spricht man mit mir auf Deutsch am Anfang, aber wenn man meine Name sieht/hört, er spricht mir auf Englisch. (Meine Name ist seeeeeehr „Anglo“.) Ich habe nicht diese Problem außer Hotels, wo man meine Name kennt nicht. Freitag andererseits sprach der Hotelempfangsperson mit mir auf Deutsch die ganze Zeit! Ich war sehr froh, dass er mit mir auf Deutsch gesprochen hat (und dass ich ihm verstanden habe).

I spent last weekend in Stuttgart with a friend. I left Friday evening, but I arrived before my friend. So I had to check into the hotel by myself. Usually, people speak to me in German in Germany... except in hotels! In hotels, in the beginning they speak to me in German, but once they see/hear my name, they speak to me in English. (My name is veeery Anglo.) I don't have this problem outside hotels, where people don't know my name. On Friday, on the other hand, the Hotel receptionist spoke to me in German the whole time! I was very happy, that he spoke to me in German (and that I understood him).

Samstag gingen wir zum Spa. Wir haben unter uns gesprochen, also habe ich nicht mein Deutsch benutzt. Sonntag sind wir ins Kino gegangen. Wir haben einen französischen Film, La Mélodie, gesehen. Es war seltsam, einen französischen Film auf Deutsch zu sehen. Der Film war… nicht großartig. Wir habe viel unter uns gelacht… die andere im Kino lachten nicht. Meine Freundin unterrichtet Deutsch und Französisch, deshalb suchten wir nach Broschüren für ihre Kurse. Ihre Flug war vor meinem Zug also ich allein spazierten. Ich bin zum Museum gegangen. Eine Frau hat mir eine Frage gestellt. Ich habe es nicht verstanden. „Wie bitte? … Ich verstehe nicht sehr gut Deutsch.“ Sie hat versucht ihre Frage auf Englisch zu stellen. Endlich habe ich ihr Problem verstanden, aber ich kannte nicht die Lösung. Wir begannen zu reden. Wir haben eine Halbe Stunde lang gesprochen, bevor der Schließung des Museums. Sie sagte mir, dass mein Deutsch „fast perfekt“ sei. Sie war sehr (sehr) nett. ;) Ich war sehr stolz und motiviert, mein Deutsch zu verbessern. Danach, reiste ich im Zug nach Frankreich.

Saturday, we went to the spa. We spoke to each other, so I didn't use my German. Sunday, we went to the cinema. We watched a French movie, La Mélodie. It was odd to watch a French movie in German. The movie was... not great. We laugh amongst ourselves a lot... the others in the Cinema did not laugh. My friend teaches German and French, so we looked for brochures for her classes. Her flight was before my train so I wandered by myself. I went to a museum. A woman asked me a question. I didn't understand it. "Excuse me?... I don't understand German very well." She tried to ask her question in English. Finally, I understood her problem, but I didn't have a solution. We began to talk. We spoke for half an hour, before the Museum's close. She told me that my German was "almost perfect". She was very (very) nice. ;) I was very proud and motivated to improve my German. Afterword, I traveled by train to France.

Nach meinem Wochenende weiß ich, dass ich mein Grammatik verbessern muss. Ich muss zurück zum Anfang gehen und ich muss üben, üben, üben!

After my Weekend, I know that I need to improve my grammar. I must return to the beginning and practice, practice, practice!

I am so impressed by this - well done! I had downloaded Clozemaster for Arabic last year but stopped using it/forgot it existed a few months ago - sounds like I should add it back into the routine.
