Und weißt du was? Booyakasha!

Ich am 30.12.2018:
Speaking: Not much to talk about here…(pun intended) By far the worst of my skills… I really have to make something to improve it if just a little bit. The most obvious thing to do would be finding a conversational partner/teacher on italki. The problem is finding the time and place where I could have an hour-long undisturbed conversation.

hedgehog.chess wrote:Tintenherz is often described as THE book for German learners. It tells the story of Mo and his daughter Maggie. They both possess a curious gift, namely they can read the fictional characters from books into our world. Unfortunately it comes with a price- for every character that comes out of the book someone has to go into the “book world”. I have to say quite a clever idea.
There's a similar rule in Jeff Noon's Vurt, parallel universes and transfers between them must be balanced.

DLI German Basic

Postby hedgehog.chess » Fri Dec 20, 2019 3:28 am

Ok, so this post will be in English because I want to reach a wider audience:) The reason for that is however far from egoistic. When it comes to free language materials many are impressed by FSI courses for German, French, Spanish and so on. But for whatever reason their DLI counterparts don’t seem to attract much attention. After seeing the Portuguese one being recommended by iguanamon to a few people, I decided to give the DLI German Basic course a try. And boy, am I impressed. Firstly, the course is extremely throughout for a “basic” one. I think all the important construction that one would need are covered. Not only that, you’re being challenged to use them by pattern drills which are the core of the course. Although I consider myself to be at a pretty solid B2 level, a run through them exposed a couple of areas I should work on and taught me a couple new things( I started with the 4th book). I now understand why the sixties and the seventies are being called by many a golden era of language learner’s courses. The dialogs and texts expose you to the grammatical points while being entertaining and contain a good dose of humor to keep you sane by the amount of things to learn :) The authors were particularly fond of giving funny surnames to the featured characters(my favorite being Dr. Herzlos). I’m now doing my 5th and 6th ( I do every lesson twice, one run after another) run through the pattern drills and I feel it’s a time well spent, it has definitely helped my automatism while speaking. (I’m doing the drills on my way to work so a high collar helps to hide that I’m talking to myself and spares me mistrustful looks of other passengers on the bus). If you decide to give the German course a try you will be spoiled by one more thing. Some kind soul have split the tapes into neat mp3 files each one containing one pattern drill or one text. If that wasn’t enough the package contains transcriptions to the available pattern drills. Now I feel like a salesman but rest assured I’m not getting any money for this advertisement:) Seriously, just give it a try, to call this course underappreciated is an understatement. You've got one "customer," I'm downloading the course now. And I believe the kind soul who split up the audio and transcribed the pattern drills was none other than Speakeasy. :D

I am using DLI for Arabic as a main source. I l've got a Polish ESKK course and I think that DLI is more natural. ESKK seems to be 'overintelectualised' in comparison with DLI.
DLI French I waiting for it's turn ;)

Ok, so now that you already downloaded it(so "bought it") let me warn you that at least one grammar point is outdated. :) It concerns Subjunctive II so lessons 86-88. But it shouldn't be a great problem.
Thank you for pointing out the man responsible for that outstanding work! Thank you very much indeed Speakeasy, you're the man!

And a little correction-I started with the taped exercised to book number 4, not the book 4 itself, as it’s not available.

I downloaded all the files, but they‘re compressed XZ files that my Windows 7 laptop can‘t open. How were you able to open them?
