It's late September, so time to start thinking about JLPT again. I'm getting tired of failing N2 over and over so this time I'm going to scale back, and make a go at the N3. I passed the old JLPT3 and took the N3 about 5 years ago and failed by just a few points years back. This year, trying to make a go at actually passing one of these things.

Well, though I'd post to bump my topic up to the top a little. Going through all this N2 grammar over again. Not sure how that'll help for the N3, but whatever, I think it's Japanese and I figure it's okay.

Made the mistake today -- oops, 抜く is transitive 抜ける is intransitive. Maybe there's other's I'm still screwing up on.

N3 coming up in a few weeks. Going over this again, I find my brain has gotten foggy on some of the transitive/intransitive pairs.

Just discovered that the US version of Zelda on Switch plays in Japanese, audio and text both. Yeah, to the end of region encoding.

And there we go. The JLPT N3. I know from years of experience on these things, they usually go worse than they feel, but after failing the N2 all these times, the N3 language/reading sections feel just super easy. The listening for me not so much, and I think I'm pure guessing 75%+ on these. We'll see how it goes. Really would like to get past this one.

Getting back into Finnish studying mode. Found this on youtube and captures the mood of the old Finnish-American diaspora well. Everyone working with lumber, thinking about the revolution to come. Kind of a listening comprehension challenge for me, but someone posted the Lyrics.

On Friskossa käyty. On Orekoni nähty, miss' on kesä sekä lumiset vuoret.
Takotass on puitu, Palm piitsil' on uitu ja hellutettu vanhat ja nuoret.
Mutta kun punapuun kantoon torppansa laettaa, niin sinne se ilon päevä koettaa.
vaikka maailman myrskyt meitä tuuvittaa niin vapaus se varmasti voettaa

Vaikka maailman myrskyt meitä tuuvittaa, niin vapaus se varmasti voettaa.

Took me a moment, but Miijamissa -- must be Miami. Piuttissa is Butte Montana? (Finnish P is half-way between English P and B) Lousissa is St. Louis? Retulaatsissa? No idea.

Oh oh, someone in a comment says it's "Red Lodge"

Still pushing pretty hard on the ClozeMaster for Finnish. My 'mastered' count is low, but I think it's mostly because I spent about a year on this site doing nothing but new sentences and not reviewing. I'm not sure what I'm learning exactly from this, but I am going through a lot of sentences, and I'm hoping to pick up some more grammar and vocabulary.

Japanese class is starting up again at the sokogakuen. And getting back into that. Super super busy with work, so just doing what I can during commute or on weekends.

For me, Finnish is starting to fill in a little bit reading, but still requires quite a few word-look-ups to get through anything native level. I can look it up, or blah-blah through, and be quite foggy about what's going on. It's completely phonetic so it's easier to just plow through with this language than Japanese.

Ah, well I avoided humiliation this year and managed to pass the N3. Vocab/Grammer score was 43/60, Reading 42/60. Listening was worst at 28/60, still a challenge for me, but not so bad that fail out, which was my concern.

I have to check back, I swear I get nearly idential scores for listening for N2 versus N3. I think this is just my lot, that to have a chance at these things I need to overcompensate. I know it's not the test, that it's me, that I kind of actually suck at listening. I think with live people it matters less, that I think I kind of fake it by picking out words and guess, and this mostly works. In a test, though it's not good. I'm not really hearing fluently.
