So you are studying three asian languages at the same time? (I remember you were studying korean and japanese, but not mandarin). If so, how do you like it so far?

If you want a more challenging short test you could try this: JLPT sample questions (be aware that each test always have the same exact questions).

My suggestion would be to go on to the next book in the series. You can always revisit the first book, but if you keep moving ahead and continue to learn, when you revisit the book (or say another beginner textbook), things will be clearer the second, third, fourth, etc. time you see certain constructions. If you try to force things, you'll remember them for the short term, but that's really it. Keep chugging and let your brain do its work in the background.

ロータス wrote:Love New Zealand libraries. I can always find ZH, JP and KR books in them. Today, I found a Mandarin reading book series. The first one in the series is called Elementary Chinese Reading Course I. Read the first lesson today and I am not ready for this series xD The book is in all Mandarin but the internet says that beginners are suppose to already know 1000 words before starting the book. Lesson 1 readings were simple (easy grammar) but a lot of looking up for me. There are word list after each reading but only had words you might not know from your 1000.

I hope I'm able to find this series when I back in America or maybe I can try and buy it here. Found this site selling it in US dollars so maybe there is hope xD

You'll often find Chinese books for sale for about a dollar near the entrance, usually on a trolley. :)

Trying to read Lesson 1 today showed me that I really need to learn the grammar before reading so doing that now. Started to use the Grammar anki deck but don't know how many sentences to do a day. 10 seems too little but I also don't know yet what I'm testing on. Do I worry about if I understand every word or if I recognize what the grammar is doing in the sentences?

That depends--can you give an example of a card?

Personally I'm a bit of a perfectionist and not knowing words bugs me =.= but when you're just starting out, there's always going to be a ton of words you don't know, and if there are too many unknowns, it just gets in the way of what you're actually trying to learn. So if the deck is on grammar, then focus on grammar, and look up the unknown words if not knowing them makes it harder to learn the grammar. Also, you could look up the most frequent unknown words, instead of spending too much time on words you don't see often.

Also, I like your log format! I need to add more progress bars and colors to my log entries :P

Ooh, that looks like a useful deck. Thanks for the link!

I'm curious to know how you're planning to replace Anki with CTA (since they do different things). To look up words?

I also have a question for you as I noticed that you use Koreanclass101 to study. I managed to get a free account somehow and was just wondering how I should use this to study with. I looked around the site but the layout seems so messy and grammar seems to get repeated at every level. I also looked at the intermediate levels and videos and it seemed to just be repeating things found on the beginners courses?

So I was just wondering if you could clarify how you go about it. Cuz it seems a waste not to use this free resource.

What skill do you want to work on with Koreanclass101? Listening, shadowing, reading?

I only got to Bag S3. Since I was only reading the dialogs that was all I cared about, reading. I like it in the beginning but when it started to throw so many new words every lesson, I stopped. So many verbs x.x (Found 재외동포를 위한 한국어 to work much better for me and my goals) I wish I had added the grammar to each card like I did for Chineseclass101. Since there is no good popup dictionary for Korean, it gets really tiring have to copy and paste each new word into Naver. I also like to work offline so having to always be online to study Korean was a pain.

I think last year all the languagepods101 changed their site to this crap but there is a way to see the original order of the lessons. When you go to Lesson Library, click on the button that says Classic Mode. For my deck, I was doing Beginner S1-5, LowInt S1-2, Int S1-2, UpperInt S1-2, AdvBlog 1.

I have mine in classic mode but the layout is still confusing haha.

Umm, basically I want to practice listening and reading but I looked and it seemed really simple :?: And I wanted to use it for the grammar lessons too because I was hoping it might be more fun and effective than using a book/reference source.

Btw, do you know ttokppogi? it's a pop-up dictionary. Maybe you'll like it. I think chrome and firefox have some more extensions. But there is also a naver extension!

Mother gifted me 30 dollars so I could buy the first three Graded Chinese Readers on Pleco. Tried reading the first story from Reader 500 but was not ready for the long sentences and commas everywhere xD Need to learn about what these commas do to a sentences and maybe 500 on CTA before trying again. Think I will start reading these after NPCR 2.

In Chinese, run-on sentences are valid grammar :D I think I've seen whole paragraphs with no periods, just commas. Periods are usually used when you start a new idea/topic, while commas are used when connecting related ideas.
