Writing in my TLs, even the little that I've done here, has definitely helped me to formulate my thoughts and find the (mostly) right words and phrases to express them. I fully realize that I make mistakes in my writing in spite of my best efforts, but it's the same when I have a conversation with someone. I make mistakes. They happen. I do the best I can, try not to cringe when I see/hear mistakes that I've made, and move on.

I guess that I'm just tired of having spent far too long not using my languages in public because of my (former) outsized fear of making mistakes. Life is short.

By the way, you've given advice to others regarding Spanish-language tutors. I really appreciate your doing that and I intend to follow your suggestions (thanks to the links that I've seen you've include in someone's log here). When available, mistake correction via tutor is invaluable.

Aunque en mi última entrada dije que iba a dejar a un lado el audiolibro La ladrona de libros a favor de (cualquier) otro libro, decidí seguir leyéndolo ya que pude obtener una copia del libro en forma física, lo que evita mi problema anterior de los ‘apartados’. Por lo tanto, lo que he estado haciendo los últimos días es leer unos capítulos del libro y luego escuchar estos mismos capítulos. Funciona bien.

También decidí pedir prestado la versión original del libro (en inglés) de la biblioteca, por si acaso no entiendo alguna palabra. Por ejemplo, en versión española leí esta frase: “… y el otro [libro] le fue entregado por un amable atardecer vestido de amarillo”. Claro que entiendo las palabras, pero bueno, no soy hablante nativa, ¿quizá ‘atardecer’ tiene otro significado que no conozco? Pero no. La versión en inglés: “… and one [book] was delivered by a soft, yellow-dressed afternoon.” (¿¿En serio??)

Y sí, no me escapa que mi plan era de leer de manera ‘extensiva’ en vez de ‘intensiva’…

J’ai fini le livre en français que j’étais en train de lire, Elémentaire. Je sais maintenant qu’il y a huit livres dans cette série (Les gardiens des âmes par Kim Richardson) et pas seulement trois comme je pensais. Je n’ai pas encore les autres livres de cette série, donc je crois que je vais changer de genre et commencer toute une autre série par Daniel Pennac; un livre pour enfants qui s’appelle Une aventure de Kamo. Il s’agit de quatre petits livres qui sont déjà sur mon étagère (un atout non négligeable !)

Leider habe ich kürzlich nicht viel mit Deutsch getan, aber ich bin mindestens am Ende des ersten Sammelbands von der Magischen Baumhaus Reihe. Jeder Sammelband hat vier Geschichten darin und besteht aus ungefähr 350 Seiten (aber mit vielen Illustrationen und einer großen Schrift.) Ich habe sechs von diesen Sammelbändern gekauft, und ich habe vor, die fünf Übrigen zu lesen (hoffentlich recht schneller als das Erste).

English summary
In Spanish I wrote about my change of heart regarding La ladrona de libros and my decision to continue listening to the audiobook, fortified with both a hard copy of the Spanish version and a temporary library copy of the English version, which looks like it will come in handy for the more poetic turns of phrase within the book, of which there are many.

In French I explained that I finished the second book (Elémentaire) of a six-book series and have now decided to switch gears from fantasy to a kids’ book series by a famous French author, Daniel Pennac: A Kamo Adventure, featuring the adventures of a young boy named Kamo. A big selling point: I own all four slim books in the series.

In German I discussed the most minor of accomplishments: the completion of the first of six four-story collections in the series I’m currently reading. I’m hoping to pick up the pace and start moving through the remaining books faster.

I’ve been dealing with a combination of house guests, traveling, and unavoidable hassles the last few weeks, but I’m now back. In the meantime I joined the Lang-8 community and with their help have hopefully cleaned up at least the most egregious of the language errors contained in my previous entries in this log.

In addition, I took the opportunity to rework and change up my current language learning materials, setting aside what wasn’t working for me as well as I’d like in favor of moving into books and DVD series that feel more suited to me right now. Details follow.

Mi libro anterior queda dejado de lado (aunque solamente por ahora) y unas pequeñas obras de Eugenio Prados salen a escena. Primero leí su relato corto “El largo funeral del señor White”, el cual me gustó.

Ahora estoy a punto de empezar su libro La tienda secreta. Tiene también una secuela y una precuela. He decidido leer primero la historia ‘principal’, y entonces si me gusta seguir con los dos otros libros.

Además, acabé de comprar la serie televisiva "Charmed" ("Embrujadas" or "Hechizadas"). Sí, lo sé, pero busqué algo ligero, largo (ésta tiene 8 temporadas) más fácil para mí que una serie original de España o América latina, y por último pero no por ello menos importante, económico. Y "Charmed" cumple los requisitos.

J’ai lu maintenant deux livres dans la série de livres “Kamo”. Je les trouve amusants et agréables, pas très simples mais aussi pas trop difficiles pour moi:

Un garçon, qui a peut-être dix ans, raconte ses aventures ainsi que celles de son ami Kamo, leur problèmes familiaux, d’écoliers, et de leur vie quotidienne en général. Les deux garçons ont une variété de mésaventures et d’ennuis, et ils sont tous racontés du point de vue de quelqu’un qui n’a que dix ans.

C’est un vrai don de pouvoir bien écrire, et surtout écrire comme un adult avec le point de vue d’un enfant. René Goscinny le fait de manière spectaculaire avec sa série “Le petit Nicolas”, et je vois maintenant que Daniel Pennac réussit aussi avec sa série “Kamo”.

Jetzt habe ich die amerikanische Fernsehserie "Alias" begonnen. (Ja, leider habe ich "Türkisch für Anfänger" für einen Augenblick beiseite gelegt.)

Ich musste akzeptieren, dass ich noch ein bisschen mehr Hilfe mit meiner Hörverständnis brauche. "Alias" hat nicht nur einen Englischen Soundtrack (nur für den Notfall!), sondern auch Untertitel, wenn ich sie brauche. Normalerweise benutze ich weder Untertitel noch den Englischen Soundtrack, aber gelegentlich benutze ich sie, wenn ich Schwierigkeiten habe, und das ändert die Sache völlig.

English summary
In Spanish I mentioned my latest reading endeavors, delving into some shorter works by Eugenio Prados that I have on my e-reader. I then listed the reasons for my decision to settle on “Charmed” as my DVD series: long length (8 seasons), less challenging than a ‘native’ Spanish or Latin American series, and relatively low cost.

In French I discussed the charming series by Daniel Pennac that features the ten-year-old Kamo, his friends, and their (mis)adventures. While perhaps not quite up to the level of René Goscinny’s “Le petit Nicolas” series, it’s still very well done.

In German i explained why I decided to change things up a bit here as well. I’ve moved into the German-dubbed American series “Alias” so that I’ll have access to German subtitles when necessary, and if I’m still missing crucial details (gotta know what those spies are up to!) I’ll be able to rewind to catch in English what stymied me in German.
