Re: So many languages, so little time. IronMike's 2018 language log (RU, EO, maybe some others)

Just finished Mondo de travivaĵoj by Tibor Sekelj, world-traveler, anthropologist, documentarian, Esperantist, polyglot. What an incredible and incredibly lucky man. From avoiding an assassination attempt to being offered 2, 3 or 4 wives, this man had a wonderful life. He spent a very long time living on top of a mountain with two yogis, this is after spending months learning yoga first. He became a sorcerer in an Indian tribe in South America. He also lived for months with a tribe which only a few years earlier gave up cannibalism.

Incredible read. I would have been done last Friday, but I left the book at work. Didn't realize it until I'd already gone through the ticket gate. I called my buddy and he grabbed it for me. I got it back today and finished it on the metro and bus on the way home. Started it January 8. Not so bad considering I only read it to and from work.

Dang! You take a few days off from the computer and BANG! the Homeschoolers United thread blows up! Yowza...

So, if you're here in my log and you're wondering "Jeez, IronMike, why so many responses to that thread?" well, that's why. I've been busy doing other stuffs. And when it comes to homeschooling and homeschool rights, I'm kind of a zealot.

Anyway, in language news, I'm a couple chapters into my new Esperanto (language) book, Antaŭ unu jarcento – La granda milito kaj Esperanto.

Image

This book continues my love for the subject of language discrimination, similar to Mi Stelojn Jungis al Revado which I completed a while ago. This new book is half translations of dairies and other primary sources from the First World War and the other half is articles on how Esperanto grew in or was affected by the War. So far so very good!

Forgot to mention that I lucked out and found copies of The Dangerous Language (vol 1 & 2) for a good price. w00t! I had read the Esperanto original years ago, but had read it over a year-plus so didn't really follow close enough as the book requires. I'll read this at some point this year.

Had to skip half a chapter of Antaŭ unu jarcento – La granda milito kaj Esperanto due to the writer being way too apologetic to the bolsheviks. Sorry, couldn't stand the propaganda anymore. The chapter itself was only about 20 pages long, so didn't skip a whole lot of the book.

The next chapter promises to be interesting. It's a diary of a Scottish man who enlisted at age 17 (by claiming to be 19) to fight in WWI. He's describing his first days in the Army, and marching in a kilt, so it promises to be an interesting chapter!

I was thinking of you when I read the news this morning. Hope you and your family can have a smooth transition. Onwards and upwards, right?

Aww. Hope the transition goes smoothly. It is hard to believe the time has gone so quickly. From my position as a log spectator, it feels like you only just got there. Curious to see where life takes you next.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

I did just get here! I still have six months. But I'm part of the 60 who've been kicked out in reciprocation for us kicking out 60 of their diplomats.
