I wouldn't say it either. I love cats.

I love cats too :) . But I don't associate the cats from the phrase with real cats. To me it's always been just a figurative expression or something like that. Right now my first association with тренироваться на кошках is the Большая разница's sketch about the colored version of Семнадцать мгновей весны - the final scene when Stierlitz writes a letter to Мосфильм.

P.S. To be honest I don't know if I ever used the phrase.

To make it work you need to delete everything except "-j79mA_6BAQ".
Like this [ youtube ]-j79mA_6BAQ[ /youtube ] but without spaces.

In class today my teacher helped me find the film Операция Ы, from which the scene I mentioned above is taken. She warned me that there are no subtitles; I told her subtitles are just a crutch (but instead of костыль I said костры (plural of костёр), which led to a significant amount of laughing), when what I meant was поддержка.

Anyway, she mentioned that the first many minutes of Операция Ы there's no talking, and I asked if it was like the first many minutes of Семнадцать мгновей весны!

Great week of class. I keep managing to fit in vocab and phrasing that she has been trying to cram into my head since September, so that's made her happy. Remembering all the ли usage and the по's (соревнование по плаванию vice whatever the hell I used to say...в плавании?)

Fun/favorite words of this week include:
стесняться: to be embarrassed
притворяться: to feign, pretend (root: твор hence other words like творческий)
предвзятый: preconceived, biased
исчерпывающий: exhaust, use up, deplete (c.f. verb черпать: to scoop, draw (up), gather)
устаревший: old-fashioned, out of date (the obvious root стар in there)

I'm going to try and fit in the movie Операция Ы this weekend, but might not succeed, as Moscow is also hosting its international book festival. What I don't need is more books, but, how can I not at least go and look?

Great class today! Lots of new vocab and my classmate made an appearance! Always welcome to have more targets.

We continued our talks about Russian СМИ and added the following vocab:

тираж: circulation (as in newspapers)
объём: volume (I know I should know this one by now, but it came as a surprise)
склонен (к чему): inclined to
безразлично: indifferent, apathetic (can kinda figure this one out: без + различно, but still rarely hear it/never use it)

But before we started that, she had us each pick 3 slips of paper and not show each other. We had to describe the word (without using the word or any constituents) to the other person. Hard! I picked влиять, словотворчество, облегчить. Even harder was trying to figure out what words she was describing. Can't remember what words she picked, but all these words were from previous classes. Oh! That's right! склонен was one of hers. That was the hardest to figure out. Another one was распространённый. Dang, maybe by the time I'm done typing this entry I'll remember her third word...

Anyway, this just proves that I've got the best teacher. She recognizes my weak area being productive skills and makes me do something like this every time.

Then we moved on to internet jargon. I had no idea one can сидеть в Интернете, especially if the duration is long. Everything else was pretty familiar to me, but of course I had to laugh at her for старые русские слова like пост, перепост, репост and, my new all-time favorite verb, лайкнуть.

Yep, as far as I know. When my instructor told us "Я лайкнула..." I couldn't stop laughing. I checked with her and she said

Exactly, but first one is a future form. The correct conjugation for present one is "лайкаю, ставлю лайк" ;)

Yes, it's hilarious :D What strikes me most in that situation, that you can easily substitute those with Russian expressions, but noone even tries.
For instance: Добавить в друзья, подружиться, следовать, поделиться.
PS: What's wrong with "пошарить", what is it even about? :?
