Love the Pimsleur Swahili.

Can't wait for the Colloquial Swahili, too. Wanna get this train moving.

Started up on Twitter again. I dumped it last year, but I created a new one just so I can follow news in my languages. I also followed the Super Challenge bot, but it looks like it hasn't been working for a while? Is it too late to join that challenge?

Still reading my Esperanto book. And still good, of course.

Don't forget to follow authors, poets, TL language academies/university departments, and specific journalists...popular TL musicians too in your TL's. I follow the Voice of America in Haitian Creole and some of their journalists. I also like to reverse engineer a language by following "learn English" sites/instructors in TL. I pick up some great slang and idioms that way. Twitter can be a huge help if you curate a good feed. It can keep you active in languages that you aren't currently concentrating on at any given time. It can lead you to discoveries you wouldn't ever find on your own if you put it to work for you. It's an important part of my learning.

It hasn't been working at all for the 2020/21 challenge, so everyone is just tracking individually and there isn't a website with a leaderboard. I don't think it's too late to join, I think to sign up you just need to post in the registration thread.

Thanks iguanamon and RadioClare.

Swahili still progressing. Lesson 4 on Pimsleur, right before it began the "Let's have a conversation" I rewound (ha! anachronism!) to the beginning and started again. The language sounds so pretty!

Kiel Akvo de l'Rivero is great. The protagonist just managed to avoid "taking part" with others in that which happens in a bordelo. Now, he's off to Berlin to perfect his German. Unfortunately it is early 1914. :O

Got the Colloquial Swahili and love it. One problem with the typeface though. Obviously when they were publishing, someone missed this part.

Image

Despite that image being from the "Look inside" on Amazon, it is in the original book, too. Funny, right?! Thankfully, through Pimsleur and the free audio with Colloquial (and TY, for that matter), I understand what those letters should sound like.

Read/listened to the first part of Lesson 1 in Colloquial today. Will do the exercises tomorrow. I'll do the Complete Swahili and Colloquial, one lesson in one, then switch, till at least lesson 5 in both. I've been looking at Kiswahili language tweets, and so far literally no words I know. ;) Granted, I'm still at the beginner stage.

Swahili continues, and Pimsleur is hard! Probably because there is nothing Indo-European-ish for me to latch onto. I've been listening to the lessons 2x and 3x. No matter.

In separate news, I finished The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, about the Malawian boy who built a windmill for his family. Incredible book. I can highly recommend it. Next up is In the House of the Interpreter, from a Kenyan author.

The July Esperanto Sumoo is over, but still reading Kiel Akvo de l' Rivero, which is great. About half-way done.

Still following several Swahili-language Twitter accounts and just today I saw the first Tweet with a word I know! Granted, it was sasa (now). That's a start, right?

Good weekend. Finished Colloquial lesson 1. Also finished through lesson 7 of Pimsleur, although I'm going to go through many of the lessons again. Start TY lesson 1 tomorrow. Also got the Swahili Grammar and Workbook (by Fidele Mpiranya) this weekend. Looks really good. I think I'll wait until I'm done with two lessons each of Colloquial and TY then I'll start that.

Also listened to some Pola Ret-Radio today.

Found a good cheap copy ($2) of the Robert Maxon-authored East Africa. Got that in the mail this weekend. It's great! And only a couple bucks. Awesome! Also finished the great In the House of the Interpreter, by Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, covering the last half of the 1950s during the state of emergency in Kenya. Great memoir, definitely recommended. Just happened that the father of a dear friend is referenced in the book several times.

About half done with the Esperanto book still, Kiel Akvo de l' Rivero.

Aha, so you're starting TY Swahili.
