I've already started Kromosomoj for the Sumoo and it is good. Very stylish Esperanto with tons of words I don't know.

Turned my Egyptian homework in yesterday, but did it on Wednesday. I think I got them all right; it was Kings' names to transliterate, using the Manuel de Codage transliteration. Easy introduction.

Reviewed unit 8 of Old English yesterday. Will start unit 9 today. My daughter's MIL left today; still have her wife and SIL and our college daughter at home, but everyone's tired from walking around the DC Mall yesterday so we're just chilling. That translates to study and reading time for yours truly!

Re: My Scanner Life. IronMike's 2021 log (EO,SWA,RUS,BCS,DEU)

End of year coming up! What should I do next year? I'm already at 69 books on Goodreads, so I'll probably finish the year with 73-ish. Maybe I'll go for 75 next year. As for languages....

Definitely keeping the Russian up. My DLPT and OPI will again be in early February. I have an advanced reading course I'm doing second week of December. Then in January I'll start doing 2 hours a night, twice a week with a DLI instructor, for about 5 or so weeks. Then the DLPT. Стучаю на дерево I get 3/3 again.

Then in April I think I'll do a refresher in BCS. Would love to get that language back up in the 2-range. It'll be another two hours a night twice a week thing. Then DLPT and OPI.

After that, who knows. Maybe try to reinvigorate my Italian? (My instructor for 2018 is running zoom tutoring sessions now.) Try German again? Like I said in another thread, I'd like to have good proficiency (2+ to 3) in 4 languages besides English. Russian, BCS, Esperanto, and ???

Somalian? Really? Have you not read my log? I think my quote was: "I never met a language I didn't want to learn...until I heard Somali." ;)

Well, probably they did not know Russian or were excessively polite or just did not care :).

Re: My Scanner Life. IronMike's 2022 log (EO,RUS, who knows what else)

Postby IronMike » Tue Dec 14, 2021 11:13 pm

Wow, been a while.

In an Advanced Russian reading class now and holy crap, the instructor is giving us some difficult articles. But hey, getting paid to do Russian all day for a week? Hells yeah!

My DLPT/OPI is at the beginning of Feb. I also found out today I've got another class with DLI instructors starting in January. This is one of those twice-a-week, two-hour-each-night classes. I think I've got 8 or 10 of those evenings sked during that period, to end with my DLPT. Last year I credit this particular class for getting me to 3/3. Yes, I hated it. I was in Africa at the time and it was late at night, and a lot of work, but still I did it. Forced myself to do it. But then got my first-ever 3/3 in a language I've been "studying" for 34+ years. I want to keep that up. Thus, this reading class and this DLI class. Again.

Then, what? I'm still in the Middle Egyptian class. I didn't submit homework this last week due to getting ready for the Russian class, but I'm still "in" the class. I'll jump back in with homework once my Russian is over. Then after Russian? If I had to decide today, I'd say: Try to get my BCS back, with the DLI instructors again. It would be great to get that language back.

There's also German or Italian in my future. 2022, here I come!

Re: My Scanner Life. IronMike's 2022 log (EO,RUS, who knows what else)

Postby IronMike » Sat Jan 01, 2022 3:28 pm

Oooh! What a crazy end to the year. We had all four kids in the house, PLUS two (of their) spouses, a sister-in-law, and a best friend, so 8 young ones (18-26 yrs old) in the house. It was so blessedly loud and noisy I loved every minute of it. Except the part where we all got the omicron variant of COVID.

Thankfully, we're all vaxxed and thus the worst of it is a bad sore throat. And it transpired early enough that we all just sheltered at home and ate left-overs for 5 days (or more, for some of us). For any of you out there wondering what it feels like, omicron feels like a really annoying, and strong, cold. For me it presented itself first with a tickle in the throat, then severe headache for a day, itchy and runny eyes (like allergies) and painful joints, then fatigue, and only on day 3 did the sore throat show up along with the usual cold symptoms vis-a-vis the nose (lots of kleenex needed). I never had a fever.

I've been continuing the Russian, and have another class with DLI instructors starting on Monday. It'll be 2 hours every Monday and Thursday for 5 weeks, and if it's anything like the previous versions I've taken, it'll be lots of work on my "off" days. Then the OPI and DLPT. After that, I'll read the Esperanto anthology, 33 Rakontoj, then I'm not sure what. If I had to decide today, I'd sign up for another class with DLI instructors but for BCS, try to get that language back, and by "back" I mean at least in the 1 to 1+ range in all three modalities.

In non-language news, I managed 80 books read for 2021 (no, not 80 foreign language books! But 6 of them were, in 3 languages). I started back with the weight-lifting after 15 months off due to the pandemic and deployment, and it feels really nice to be lifting again, esp. since we bought a home gym! Also back in the pool after a long time out of it in Oct/Nov. Well, it'll be nice to get back in the pool once my sore throat is gone. ;)

How'd your 2021 end? Hopefully, you're all healthy and hale! Happy New Year!
