I did look at it - I can't remember why I didn't start/complete it - but I think I had a go. It was a while ago and I'm at a different level now, so downloading now. It's big at just under a Gb - so not sure if it's audio or exe - the excitement builds....

I have a lot of apps with the military phrases that I think come from this source.

I'm just a bit put off by the "We come in peace, shoot to kill" aspect of some of it. Or the specific, "please use a bowline when tying up my PT boat".

I'm toying with the idea of adding Sanskrit to my LONG TERM wishlist.

A couple of people I knew could read (and one of them possibly speak) sanskrit. Presumably using devanagri or similar script but it was at the British Museum a long time ago and the artifact was over 2000 years old, maybe a lot more.

Good quote from one of them "Why do they call it the British Museum? Everything is stolen from somewhere else!"

Sanskrit - It's influenced so many languages, many of the languages I could practice through work are Indian, but not Hindi - for Sanskrit based ones like marathi, gujarati, hindi, urdu, bhojpuri - I wonder if Sanskrit would be enough for me to springboard into those partly derivative / descendent languages. Obviously dravidian languages aren't applicable even with lots of English and Sanskrit loan words.

I've always been interested in origins, proto-indo-european etc.... maybe I'll add it 5-10 years hence.

Spanish, Cebuano, Tagalog have more urgency. A germanic and a slavic language possibly first.

I think that's my entire life spoken for...

Looks like it's shockwave and it won't play - but plenty of MP3s and assignments, but I don't think I'll be able to get the swf files running at work or home.

Some interesting elements of the assignments:- "Given audio recordings, written vocabulary and related imagery, learner will identify and match terms for a variety of small weapons and munitions"

I think I need to investigate how I might use it. mp3s, html (culture, grammar, tones for confirmation, questions), writing drills and more. I just think I need to piece the different parts together in some way.

My spanish course has arrived. From open university L194 portales. Doesn't start for a few weeks but I'll get started now.

First 23 pages done. Not sure of pace. I'm guessing around 1000 pages in all aiming to get me to A2 by next July or something. The courses include online and physical tutorials which are generally poorly attended so I'm hoping I have a lot of tutor time for speaking practice.

I also have L161 which is a general Languages/culture course coming at some point.

Spanish course is meant to be 6 to 8 hours a week, plus other course means that's all my free time spoken for.

So superchallenge suspended, I'll just read / watch when I feel like it.

Cebuano also suspended unless I feel like it, want to apply my Spanish Learning experience and I'm ahead of the spanish schedule.

The headstart course, Mormon grammar, new Bible and ability to practice with natives all means I have a chance with cebuano but I'll concentrate on spanish and when I'm ready for cebuano, glossika might have released their cebuano course.

I really want to achieve something with spanish and ideally get to a level I can sustain through native material (passive) plus add some active use.

I'm not losing too much cebuano. I might still be processing my previous work or occasional daily usage is keeping some of it alive. Usage is spontaneous, fluent but basic.

Read multilingual dinosaur cards to kiddy in spanish except one which I read in Italian until I wondered about a word starting with s.

Interesting that the differences between spanish and Italian talking about that subject were minimal.

Some longer sentences and faster speech threw me.

Me and Mrs looking for new jobs.. other timesinks.. not much done, other than first bit of my Open University L194 Portales course (1 of 11).

It's been a long time since I've posted.

For career reasons I needed to do some technical certifications.

I need 3 exams per cert, 2 certs.

I haven't done anything like this before (well, once 10 years ago helped by fantastic residential courses).

Progress
1) 3 hour exam. 10-15 hours self study on a subject I know well. Idea was to practice and learn what I'm missing. I didn't expect a pass. Just scraped a pass.

2) 2 hour exam. 30 (60 double speed videos) hours self study on a subject new to me. Comfortably passed.

3) next is a 2 hour exam similar subject to 2.

4 to 6) Another 3 after this taking me close to Xmas.

Since starting I realise that most people don't pass first time and on Reddit I've seen many threads on experienced people taking 4 or 5 goes per exam. I really don't know what's typical. I don't know other people in real life who have taken them

Also have started Open uni courses L194 Spanish and L161 cultures. Not much to report. Early stages. But my production of Spanish is dreadful. I can kind of read it though.

As a result previous language work has stopped.

I've gone back to Duolingo and 40 plus golden out of 63 in the last week.

Anyway, a few thoughts.

1) glossika launch today. Will it include Cebuano? Interested in everyone's reviews.

2) I've been doing the technical learning by watching multiple videos by different authors at double speed with captions. That way my 30 hours is more like 60 hours. I'm wondering if useful for language learning. This way I don't dwell on anything as I know it will be covered by someone else if important and I don't get bored and my mind doesn't wander so much. I use pomodoro of 25 minutes etc. Works well.
