71 mins el ministerio del tiempo watched.

Seem to have run out of the free YouTube rtve episodes.

It was quite hard so maybe I'll switch to documentaries.

Hard because of fast, dramatic dialogue. But I did understand a bit.

Plus 59 minutes of "cuéntame cómo pasó temporada" on rtve YouTube. Lots of dialogue. Kind of wonderyears set in 1968 Spain. Watchable, gentle funny plus culture of Spain from a time formative for some people I might meet.

I've just decided to watch anything rtve YouTube offers and will switch to history documentaries when I want.

I came across this:- https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/07/1 ... echmatics/

Some highlights:-

"How is Speechmatics able to add new languages so quickly?

"It's the neural networks! We need some data for a particular language, but much less than you normally need, because we can pick up what we've done from other languages. How I make sounds with my mouth is quite similar to a Japanese speaker – you've got the same vocal apparatus. You're making the same sort of sounds.

"So a lot of what we've got to do is, first going from wave form, that acoustic data, is get to the phonemes, the basic sounds of the language. It isn't completely language dependent. So we can have thousands of hours from one language and a smaller amount from another, and just say tweak it a little bit."
...
"We have released the API to our cloud version "

Which I read as hopeful for learning multiple languages for myself as I develop an ability to listen and output new sounds.

at 125k I'm 1/10 of a superchallenge.

I just did a test at http://dialangweb.lancaster.ac.uk/ and got A1 or LESS for reading.

That rather dented my ego!

Readlang: 160 to read, most are A1/A2 songs, short with videos. After that it's all the A1/A2 stuff I could find on readlang.

Perhaps superchallenge isn't best thing to be doing, but I feel I need to have a good go at it.

125k is a milestone, hoping by 250k I have real progress. As it is, not that many words are new to me, but I just need to refresh. Problem is finding the time. I seem to be 2000-3500 words per hours (without breaks) and so my target will be 3 plus hours a day. Then I need 45 mins as a target plus loads more to catch up.

Spanish - mostly done yesterday, 12000 word text (script 2 from El ministerio del tiempo - B1 according to readlang)

Leading to readlang saying:- "You've completed 289 texts containing a total of 146566 words"

Updated at end of day.

40 odd A1 or A2 songs left on readlang and then all A content done, next B1 plus. Did some B1 over last few days.

You've completed 305 texts containing a total of 150083 words.

I should be on 195000 words and should have done 25 hours of video but i should speed up with longer texts. Music and dialogue videos are good for my listening but longer texts rack up word counts faster.

Also I'm reading around 2000 words or 8 pages an hour. I hope and expect that speed to improve.
150000 words is 600 pages. Pretty good from A1/A2 reading start. But still no real production/output and little grammar.

Aim is to fill the brain for course and conversations to join dots.

Spanish 46 mins of rtve talk podcast which I'll count as part of video superchallenge.

Some readlang not all of which will be counted as the prince doesn't seem to work that well.

32 videos left of readlang's public content at A1/A2. Other content are b1 plus. So I have to decide on which long books to start reading.

10000 to 100000.

Spanish versions of

Pride and prejudice 110k words (440 pages)
Alice in wonderland
Treasure island
Trafalgar 19 century novel by Benito galdez 40k words left of c1 50k book (I read the first 11k words fairly easily right at the start).
Tom Sawyer
Huck Finn
Etc.

Tempted by some 11k b1 scripts of el ministerio del tiempo then maybe pride and prejudice but very long.

Any thoughts?

Updated at end of day...

Spanish

Kiddo awake now and wants alphablocks on TV (YouTube / cast).

A bit interesting to see how english phonics / words are taught.

Makes me wonder if there's a spanish equivalent?

So now I have to switch away from the readlang songs which need YouTube. Only about 4 A1/A2 songs left!

I will switch to b1 texts now. Logging state before I read as I believe reading might be faster than music videos.

Readlang "You've completed 345 texts containing a total of 161187 words" in a month so very good for workrate and an experiment in purely native material.

Probably not very efficient but as it's a hobby I can play around. Learning a bit about myself, languages and learning general.

Edit: I decided on 110000 words/ 440 page " pride and prejudice" partly as I know the story from films and partly due to snob value that it sounds like a hard thing. According to readlang it's b1 as are many kids books and the spanish was easier than the c1 Trafalgar novel.

I'll embrace the shallowness of choosing a book partly on boastfulness as it adds to motivation.

But if it truly is just b1 then a long text from one author should be easier than multiple short texts. Also should be videos on YouTube later.

Target is reading 7000 words a day.

2000 so far at 20:30.
6000 at 22:20 so about 2200 per hour accounting for breaks and interruptions.

So 110000 words around 50 hours!

Monday 14th August.

3 weeks roughly since last post and sod all done in language learning.

I use cebuano a bit at home and social situations.

Spanish very little. I'm only at 14% on pride and prejudice novel translation.

Reasons: loads! Work, unexpected domestic stuff (not too serious but time consuming) and kiddo being on summer holidays so later bedtimes, wanting more of my time which I'm happy with but Spanish is being squeezed.

I start my course in October, I might get course materials any time, so I won't beat myself up.

All will be fine if I do a good job with the course and use the online tutorials for speaking.

Cebuano, friends brought me a new translation of the Bible in book form. Pretty big and apparently more modern language (less build, bisdak).

I use a phone mostly for reading which is hard at the end of the day when I'm tired. Books that I can write in might be good but no instant word lookups.

Lastly my Spanish might be suffering from Cebuano and Hindi wanderlust. But the timing of the course means I should stick to Spanish and perhaps new challenges will reinvigorate.

I've learnt a few Hindi/Urdu words before. I work in IT, with lots of Hindi speakers (but not necessarily native, first languages are a very diverse set of Indian languages or Indian English - Hindlish?)

Hindi / Urdu / Gujarati / Punjabi / Marathi are probably the easiest languages for me to get daily exposure to. Much easier than European languages like spanish. But they are different languages so picking one is hard.
