Ukrainian, sighs So beautiful, and yet so seemingly unattainable. I've always known vocabulary to be my weakness, which is why I've usually just stuck to Romance languages, a plan supported by the flaming catastrophes which my attempts to venture outside that subfamily have always become. Glances up at my collection of Irish books guiltily. That said, I really enjoy listening to Ukrainian, and, at least attempting to speak it. I'm going to get the Assimil course, I believe, as the pdf I've been using up until now is, quite honestly, terrible. Once that comes in I'll write what I think about it.

Iterum salvere omnes jubeo.

Yesterday was the end of the first week of my second year at university. It seems all my friends from last term have abandoned me, but that's usual. There's a Dutch exchange student in my Latin class who is a very good Latinist, and seems nice, so I might try to get to know her better. (The fact that she's drop-dead gorgeous doesn't hurt. :) ) This term I'm taking 4th year French lit, 4th year French composition, 3rd year Italian, 3rd year Latin and intro Modern Greek, which the university un-cancelled at least in part because I threw a fit about their having cancelled it.

Italiano:

(Switching to English, since that's about as much Ukrainian as my brain can produce atm, and I'm sure it's super wrong anyways.)

The registrar in the modern languages department at my uni is Ukrainian, and I've spoken with her a bit, although I can't speak well if at all. Like all Ukrainians, she's been very nice about it, which is helpful, since I've had to change four courses this week. I also took Russian for three days, but hated every minute of it. It sounds so hideous compared to Ukrainian, one of the worlds most beautiful languages. Although I don't enjoy the process of learning Ukrainian, since it's hard, the more time I spend with it, whether it's singing in my parish choir, trying to understand any of my Ukrainian Bible, at prayer or speaking the few, broken sentences I can produce, the more I love the language, food, music, culture and everything else of Ukrainian.

Lingua latina:

I also started Modern Greek Monday. I've studied a bit before, as I wrote several years ago. So far we've just been working through the alphabet, which has been a bit boring for me, although my handwriting has improved, which is helpful. My pronunciation is great, I'm told which is nice. We're supposed to start our textbook properly this coming week, but as of last Thursday, noone other than myself had ordered the text book, so we shall see what happens.

As always, corrections, especially to my Ukrainian and Italian are always welcome.

I didn't end up doing any grammar study, but I did finish the Assimil course. I guess it prepared me for intermediate enough, since they moved me up to advanced. I can't speak well, but that's to be expected, given I spoke for the first time in my life last Monday. I can read quite well, though, and my grammar seems pretty good. The course itself was excellent, thorough and engaging. I quite recommend it to anyone interested in Italian. I have the advanced course as well, although now with me at uni. I shall do it this coming summer.

We finally started our textbook today! And learned the singular forms of the present tense of έχω! Woo! I'll be reading the Philokalia in no time! Worringly, only 3 people showed up today. We only have 5 at the best of times. If the MG program gets cancelled it will royally screw up my major, since I'll have to start with intro Classical, and none of those credits will count until I pass wherever I would be in Modern. Hopefully that won't happen.

More happily, we actually have homework today, which makes me hopeful for tomorrow having more content.

I discovered that there is an old half Ukrainian woman in my Italian class. I shall have to speak with her at some point. I also did lesson 24 in Assimil.

Italiano:

And then there were two.... I'm going to start filling out transfer applications tomorrow, hopefully I won't have to transfer again, but if Modern Greek is cancelled, I'll have to. We only had two students today. I'm going to start bending over backwards to help the other one, to keep them in the course.

Lingua Latina:
Hodie classis mea Plauti erat.
