Ukrainian :
Today's grammatical reading was on verbs which use cases other than the accusative for their object. The concepts were simple : it is simply a question of learning the vocabulary and remembering which case to use. Many of them make some amount of logical sense, however, and I imagine I would still be understood if I used the accusative by mistake.

Catalan :
The Assimil work continues. I did lessons 3 and 4 today. Still nothing new and not much special to report. I had, I must admit, somewhat forgotten how delightful Catalan is.

Français :
Je lus le chapitre I du livre III du tome I des Misérables, et le chapitre XLIII du Comte de Monte-Cristo.

Hi, I'm still pretty new at French and I have a question about the bolded portion. What tense of 'lire' is it and why did you choose to use it over passé composé? I seem to be OK at reading the tenses, but when it comes to production, it's a crapshoot.

I'm enjoying your log. Thanks,

Jack

It is the first person indicative form of the preterite or passé simple. In this case, lire is an irregular verb, so it looks a bit odd.

Oh, OK. I recognize it, but didn't know what it was called. I have always attached it to the narrator in stories. I've never seen anyone actively use it.

thanks.

Ukrainian :
I finished the chapter on verbs in my grammar today, finally. Today's reading was on verb formation, presenting a dizzying array of prefixes to learn. A lot of the resulting compounds did seem to make some degree of sense, and many of the prefixes can stand as prepositions on their own, like in Latin, so that should make things easier. I am starting to understand why the Slavic languages are considered more archaic than the Romance or Germanic ones : it is not just that they have declensions, but a lot of the word formation and even some elements of the syntax feel much like Latin or older forms of Greek.

Catalan :
I did lessons 5 and 6 in my Assimil course today. That, at least, is coming along quite nicely.

Latina :
Eclogam septam P. Virgilio Marone scriptam lexi hodie. Non valde difficile erat.

Ukrainian :
I read the first half of the next chapter of my grammar, which was about adjectives. Pretty much all of this I already knew : it is simply a question of learning the vocabulary along with the prefixes/pronouns.

Catalan :
I did lessons 7 and 8 of Assimil. Still no real challenge, as this is all just review for me.

Ukrainian :
I finished my chapter on adverbs in my Ukrainian grammar. Only one chapter left! At liturgy today, I remarked that I can understand better and can speak tolerably well. My biggest weakness is vocabulary.

Catalan :
I did lessons 9 and 10 in my Catalan course today. Already a tenth of the way through, and it is progressing nicely.

Français :
Je lus le chapitre XLVI du Comte de Monte-Cristo et le deuxième chapitre du cinquième livre du tome I des Misérables. Ceux-ci aussi progressent très bien.
