Ukrainian :

One of my keyboard stickers seems to have vanished, and I do not know whither it went, much to my disappointment. Luckily I can remember which letter it is, even without the sticker. I also continued reading the noun chapter of my grammar and finished the section on masculine nouns. They seem to be significantly less regular than feminine ones, with the exact choice of ending varying depending on the word, dialect or age of the speaker. Once my ability to read Ukrainian gets better I think I will try to find a book specifically talking about Galician to inform me which endings I ought to use.

Français :

J'ai terminé aujourd'hui Le colonel Chabert.

Ukrainian :

I still did not find my sticker, sadly. However, I did finish the section on neuter noun declension, which is significantly easier than the masculine version. I am also continuing to work through my Memrise course.

I also read a bit about Albanian recently : it is absolutely wild.

Français :

J'ai lu les premiers six chapitres du Comte de Monte Cristo ce matin, un fait qui n’est pas si impressionnant qu'il semble. C'est OK, mais le style de Dumas ne me plaît pas autant que ce de Balzac ou Hugo. Quand même, ses intrigues d'aventure sont toujours intéressantes et je suis sûr que je sera bientôt roulé par l'intrigue.

Ukrainian :

The next section of chapter 2 in my grammar described the main uses of each case. I have started to read that, and finished the section describing how the cases are used either with verbs or with other nouns. Most of this seemed relatively intuitive, and not that different from how they are used in Latin or Greek. The rest of the chapter deals with prepositions and the cases they require and this seems like one of the more complicated parts of the language. I shall read that tomorrow.

Ukrainian :

I finished the noun chapter of my grammar. This last section was on word formation and presented a dizzying array of suffixes and prefixes to be learned. One thing I noticed was that Ukrainian has a large amount of calques, many of which are quite interesting.

For example : змова conspiracy from з together + мова speech - literally "speech together" like Latin conspiro
Or : співчуття sypmathy from спів- co-/fellow- + чути to hear + a noun derivation suffix - literally "co-hearing" like Greek συμπάθεια

This compounding trend continues into other things as well like one of my new favourite words : листопад from лист leaf + пад derived from пасти to fall, but which combined mean November.

I should inspect the etymology of all the names of the months : perhaps it will help me remember them.

Ukrainian :

I began the chapter on adjectives today. The adjectival inflection system is much simpler than that of the nouns : there is basically only one set of endings the spelling of which will vary slightly depending on the stem to which they are attached or if they are palatalized. This was a present surprise after the noun chapter. The second part of this section focuses again on word formation, which I shall read shortly.

Latin :
I read the fourth Eclogue of Virgil today, since we are "reading" that one in my Latin class. I very much enjoyed it, and, again, it was significantly easier than I expected it to be.

Le Comte de Monte-Cristo is a great book, I reread it not long ago. There are some parts where it drags on a bit (the Italian part, for instance) but overall great.

- "que j'ai lue" (agrees with "section" here)
- "il y a quelques jours" sounds more natural to me
- "essayer de" (but "s'essayer à" exists, with a slightly different meaning)
- "un jour, je vais le terminer", here "une journée" wouldn't be used
- "jusqu'à ce que je"

Merci beaucoup.

Français :
Dans mon cours sur la "culture" pop française j'ai fait une présentation sur Nicola Ciccone, un chanteur populaire québécois. C'était assez bien, j'espère mais il y avait multiples problèmes avec la technologie qui l'a rendue un peu difficile. En addition, j'ai lu jusqu'à chapitre XV du Comte de Monte Cristo.

Ukrainian :
I finished the chapter on adjectives in my grammar today. The adjectives were much more simple than the nouns, which is quite nice. I am now more than half-way through the book, so it seems that the rest of the grammar shall also be more simple than the nouns. I am still slowly working through a Memrise course, as I need to learn many more words.

Ukrainian :

I started the chapter on pronouns today. This will be pretty easy, I hope, since I already know most if not all of the pronoun forms. However, seeing all of them written out in tabular format is still helpful. I need to learn more words.

Greek :

I had my first Greek lesson today, finally. I was very rusty, although, to be quite honest, I am not sure if my professor's modern Greek was much better than mine (my?) own.

I believe I may have explained this before, but two years ago the Modern Greek program at my uni was cancelled right before the academic year ended, after I had already signed up for introductory Modern Greek. I threw a fit, and a couple weeks before the autumn term was supposed to start they got a former international student from Greece to come teach Modern Greek and so I took two terms with her last year. This year, I was supposed to be on exchange and thus would have been able to take the other two terms for my degree. As a result, the university dismissed the teacher and re-abolished the Modern Greek program.
Then my exchange got cancelled, so I spent most of the summer writing email after email to anyone and everyone trying to figure out what to do. The current "supervisor" of my independent study is the only person in the department, apparently, who knows any Modern Greek. For a whole host of reasons, the beginning of this independent study has been postponed repeatedly, so it did not start until today. This will be... interesting.

Français :
Rien de spécial n'est passé dans mon cours de littérature française aujourd'hui. Nous continuons à discuter Le Comte de Monte Cristo, qui, honnêtement, j'aime de moins en moins.

"mine" or "my own". Mine is fine. Good luck with Greek! Do you intend to learn Ancient version?

Thank you. Yes, I will work my way back once my Modern Greek gets better.

Ukrainian :
Mostly busy with other stuff today, but I read the next section in the pronoun chapter, which discussed possessive pronouns. Again, this is mostly stuff I already know, but it is still nice to see it all laid out neatly in tables.
