You guys. YOU GUYS.

I've stumbled across a French conlanging forum. An active forum! Behold, L'Atelier: créations linguistiques et mondes imaginaires! Excuse me while I go off to lurk...

Je suis très excite, as they say in bad meme-French. ;)

While hunting around for descriptions of Iversen's word list "method", I stumbled upon this video:

Iversen wrote:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZAjGo7nPHs: Three column wordlists - Niels Iversen at the Polyglot Gathering 2015

At first I was quite confused about why his Spanish sounded so weird and somewhat incomprehensible... until a few seconds later, when I realized he's speaking Catalan, not Spanish! At which point I was quite pleased that I could follow along as well as I did. ;)

Now that I have multiple languages going on, I'm going to probably play with formatting for a while, figuring out how best to present the info. For now, the sections of my log posts will be color-coded such that Spanish is green, French is blue, and German is red.

Total time spent on languages today: 96 min.

I'm not "supposed" to start French until January, but I did a tiny bit of French-related stuff this morning; I couldn't help myself. ;)

- 10 minutes of podcast Journal en français facile, listening only; I did not read the transcript nor take any notes. I did catch a surprising amount of "gist" based just on my Spanish. I'm excited for when I start studying for real!

- 3 minutes of listening to the song Après d'un autre from the musical "La légende du Roi Arthur" while also reading the lyrics (yay LyricsTranslate + Spanish!). I'm quite sad that I won't make it to Europe while this show is still in production. If they offered a taped version of it, I would happily pay them; unfortunately, plays don't often have official recordings. There are bits and pieces of random YouTube videos, but that's not the same at all. :(

- 3 minutes of listening to the same song on LyricsTraining (karaoke mode)

DEUTSCH 5 min.
Warum nicht? ;)

- 5 Minuten den Podcast Slow German. Ich verstehe noch Deutsch!! :D

Total time spent on languages today: 4 hr. 19 min.

- 3 hours of listening to songs from the King Arthur musical, repeatedly, while splicing them together into a single video. Also read the English/French bilingual lyrics now and then.

DEUTSCH 4 min.

- 4 Minuten den Podcast "Langsam gesprochene Nachrichten". Zu langsam!

I spent some time today prepping Anki for French. For simple words, a single Note can have multiple languages*, like so:

English: night
Spanish: la noche
French: la nuit
German: die Nacht

I've set Anki up so that it generates English/German, English/Spanish, and Spanish/French cards, but it will only generate English/French cards when it's not possible to make my preferred Spanish/French card. The cards also automatically show which language pair it is on the front face of the card, so that I'm never in doubt as to whether I'm supposed to be answering Spanish/French or English/French.

So I'm feeling pretty pleased with myself, even if this is all relatively simple. (No programming needed, even!)

Disclaimer: I know that this sort of one-word Note won't work for MCDs or other complex cards. I also know that many people dislike one-word flashcards. YMMV, but I've been doing this for years now and this setup works for me. You do you. :)

Re: Arthaey's log (Spanish & French)

Postby arthaey » Wed Nov 25, 2015 8:13 pm

Total time spent on languages on Tuesday, November 24th: 4 hr.

Inciclopedia wrote:"In questo pueblo ya no si mangiaba muzzarella in honore a Muzzolini."

Reempecé porque Stelle escribió en su log:
Stelle wrote:I started reading Apocalipsis Z instead, and it's the kind of brain candy that I have enough energy for at the end of the day.

Obvio. Jejeje...

Pues, basta con estos chistes no chistosos. Mil disculpas por la molestia. ;)

FRANÇAIS 2 hr 25 min.

- 2 hours of half-listening to the second half of the first act of the "La Légende du Roi Arthur" and sporadically reading the English translations of the lyrics. Plus maybe another 2 hours' worth just in the video-editing process, splicing snippets together...

It's weird spending so much time with a language while consciously avoiding any explicit grammatical study or attempts at production. I'm not normally a "silent period" proponent; I'm doing this because I'm not "supposed to" start studying French without my sister. ;)

I'm really shocked at how much of the show I can find in snippets on YouTube. I'm simultaneously appalled that so many people are filming on their smartphones during a live performance, but also greatful because I won't have a chance to go to France before the show ends...

- 10 minutes of listening to "Journal en français facile". I am rather in disagreement with their calling it "easy", at least compared to something like "News in Slow German". Even so, I'm at least able to guess what the topic is.

- 18 minutes of reading my French Twitter feed. I actually understand a lot of what I read, even if I couldn't produce it myself.

DEUTSCH 12 min.

- 9 Minuten Twitter lesen.

- 2 Minuten "Tagesshau in 100 Sekunden" anhoren.

- 1 Minuten auf Twitter schrieben

Total time spent on languages on Wednesday, November 25: 7 hr 12 min.

Not doing much of anything else the past 3 days. Including not much sleep. ;)

It took me three very very late nights, but my first video-editing projects is a success! I hunted down a ton of YouTube clips of "La Légende du Roi Arthur" and spliced them all together. I now have a single 2-hour video with all of the songs plus a fair bit of dialog, too.

Tomorrow, when I'm not busy with Thanksgiving ;) I will create the subtitles file for it. I'm pretty excited about this; I think it would be accurate to say this musical has become the single biggest motivation for me wanting to learn French now. :)

DEUTSCH 12 min.

Tut mir leid. Ich will nicht mehr jetzt Deutsch studieren. ;)

Total time spent on languages Thursday, November 26: 2 hr 40 min.

It was Thanksgiving and I went out to dinner with my Mexican roommate but also an American who barely speaks Spanish, so the evening was lots of (good) English conversation but not much Spanish.

- listened to the songs themselves on my phone, because I'm digging the music that much. :)

- more time listening to songs while I reviewed my file for any transitions between video clips that needed cleanup

- while looking for more scenes to add to my file, I stumbled across this video, which is the audio of "Je voudrais déjà être roi" ("Can't Wait To Be King") from Disney's "Lion King," but with visuals from the musical "La légende du roi Arthur." It was... unexpected. ;) I can't quite decide whether I like it or not. :)

Pues, ¡Manel Loureiro!

Fallo de Sistema 113

Voy a escucharlo este fin de semana.
