I am not a programmer. I've tried, but I can barely figure my way around a Tumblr theme code and adapt it to my needs. Code is a beautiful thing when I figure out its logic, but I do not have the brains or patience to sort it out most of the time.

Thank you for the help. I'll see if I can make a bilingual log. <3

I'm home sick today, which apparently meant I wanted to do a bunch of mindless forum stat updates...

Behold, my 2017 language-learning statistics in the post above! (The numbers are sad but true.)

Behold, an updated first post of my log, now with links to searches based on "tags" that I have added to each and every post of my log!

The breakdowns don't add up to the totals and percentages like 0% don't tally. Maybe some of the numbers are untrue and really not as sad?

Which numbers are off by more than +/- 1 (due to rounding errors etc)?

I'm not worried about your one post but your spreadsheet and thus you other and future calculations. For example ASL don't add and this doesn't look right because 1/10 of 20% would be 2%:

I think you've made some incorrect assumptions or calculations?

I use the ATracker app, not a manual spreadsheet, for one.

For another, I still don't see the math error. The per-language percentage is relative to just that one language, not to the whole thing.

ASL total = 9.5 hours per the app, and broken down it's 1+1+1.5+4+1 = 8.5, so off by one because of how I rounded each individual skill when typing it out.

Spanish total = 50 hours per the app, and broken down it's 1+5.5+32.5+10+0.5 = 49.5, so off by 0.5 again due to rounding. The percentage for Spanish Reading is correct because 10/49.5 = 20.2% out of my time spent on Spanish, not out of all the languages put together.

I don't follow where your "1/10 of 20%" comment comes from?

Anyway, I'm pretty sure my math is close enough for a forum post summarizing a year's worth of language-study tracked via an app's stopwatch feature.

Busqué una versión de Coco de Pixar en español con las bocas sincronizadas con las palabras del español, pero me rendí. Compré una copia con el español doblado, peros las bocas siguen formando las palabras inglesas. :/I looked for a copy of Pixar's Coco in Spanish with the lips synchronized to the Spanish words, but I gave up. I bought a copy with Spanish dubs, but their mouths still form English words.
Si alguien sabe en dónde pueda comprar la versión de Coco re-animada para español, favor de decirme. If anyone knows where to buy the version of Coco re-animated for Spanish, please tell me.
Y después de esta búsqueda fracasada, además empecé mirar la película demasiada tarde por la noche y no logré acabar con ella antes de que me cansara. Ándale pues, ¡la acabaré otro día!And after that failed search, furthermore I started watching the movie too late at night and I couldn't finish it before I got tired. Welp, I'll finish it another day!
Me sorprendí de que tan fácilmente pueda entender el español de Coco, ¡y sin subtítulos! :) Supongo que aprendí algo durante mi año en México.I was surprised at how easily I can understand the Spanish in Coco, and without subtitles! I guess I learned something during my year in Mexico.

From the bit I copy-n-pasted right after it:

Spanish Skills Breakdown:
- Anki: 1 hour (0%)
- Reading: 10 hours (20%)
- Studying: 0.5 hours (0%)

If 10 hours is 20%, then 1 hour would be 2% rather than 0%.

The original was:

Spanish Skills Breakdown:
  • Anki: 1 hour (0%)
  • Interacting*: 5.5 hours (11%)
  • Listening: 32.5 hours (67%)
  • Reading: 10 hours (20%)
  • Studying: 0.5 hours (0%)

But if the calculations are outside of your control and you're happy with them then no problem. I had difficulty understanding your calculations because multiple things didn't add up and I kept trying but couldn't work out what should add to what to get what or what should go together to total 100% (neither ES nor FR added to 100%), but if you understand the calculations then that's all that matters. I decided to post because I was worried that there were wrong formulas in your spreadsheet that you weren't aware of.

James29 wrote:I really commend Netflix for making all their original programming with so many audio options. The ones that they make with the original language in Spanish also seem to have the "audio description" option which looks great for language learners. It will at least double the amount of Spanish in each show. I find myself searching for new shows based on this option.

It really does look like a fantastic option for getting more input. I'm not 100% convinced that it won't "ruin" the drama of the show itself, but I'm definitely going to give it a shot.

There aren't a ton of options with Spanish audio descriptions yet, but what's there seems decently high quality:

Be sure to search for Spain Spanish. For some reason they classify it as a different language for audio description. Also, there are a few shows that have the feature that don't come up in the search. I found that I got used to it very quickly and it did not interfere at all with the drama or flow of the show.
