Yay, you're back! Again! I wasn't around when you came back in June, and when I got back into the swing of things I thought I'd missed you. I'm glad that wasn't the case! :D

Pues, claro que lo compré.I stumbled across a book written by that Chumel Torres that I wrote about two weeks ago. They sell it at Barnes & Noble! So of course I bought it.
;)The books is called The History of the Republic. I read it a single week, despite it being 264 pages long, because it has lots of fun drawings and a scarity of words on many pages.
But it really did entertain me. I recommend it to whoever likes satire and is curious about Mexican history.
Otro libro más serioAnother more serious book
Now I'm reading another book in Spanish, this one more serious than Chumel's. It's a memoir called The Line Becomes a River, written by Francisco Cantú, an American Latino who joins the Border Patrol to learn about and help immigrants. I've read half of the book, and the author is nowstarting to become disillusioned (as everyone expected).
I don't usually read translated books when practicing my languages; I prefer to read them in their original languages. But I make exceptions when the topic of the book "fits well" with the language, like in this case with the US border, Spanish-speaking immigrants, and Spanish. (Note that this means that y'all who don't speak Spanish can read this book in its original English.)
Un grupo de dos, ¿aún es grupo?A group of two, is it even a group?
:)Outside of books, last week I went to a Spanish Meetup group. It was the first meeting a long time for this group, so only me and one other person attended. The other person speaks better Spanish than me, so we chatted in pure Spanish for more than an hour. It was good practice! But I hope that there will be more people in the coming weeks, because I want to find an active Spanish group, not just an individual who speaks Spanish.

I work as a software consultant, and for the first time in more than 2 years, there's an opportunity to work on a project in MADRID!!
:(This would seem to be super fantastic news... but very very very unfortunately, the dates of the project coincide with my pre-planned, pre-aid vacation. So I HAVE TO SAY NO TO THIS PROJECT.
;))My coworkers say that they understand how I feel, but that isn't possible. They aren't huge language nerds like us. YOU ARE MY PEOPLE, so that's why I'm sharing MY TRAGEDY with y'all. (Yes, I'm exaggerating a little bit... but only a little bit.)
But there might be a silver lining in this. It's just that I'm not completely sure that I'm ready right now to conduct myself at a professional level in Spanish. So this is a wake-up call for my technical and business vocabulary.
Pero con mi experiencia en aprender idiomas en general, no tengo miedo.I've never tried to learn a large quantity of specific vocabulary like this. But with my experience in learning languages in general, I'm not too concerned.
Mis recursos hasta ahora:My resources up until now:
  • YouTube videos results from a search for "software conference" [in Spanish terms]
  • MOOC courses on programming and Agile consulting (like this)
  • libros de desarrollo de software; por ejemplo:
  • book on software development; for example:
  • iTalki sessions with a Mexican software engineer — we're going to do pair programming!
Other resource suggestions for working as a software engineer are welcome.
And apart from all that, I'm still prepping for NaNoWriMo in Spanish and my one-week trip to Mexico (the aforementioned pre-planned vacations).
Pues, ¡manos a la obra! :)Welp, time to get to work!

There are only eleven days left until November and the start of the magical craziness that is NaNoWriMo! Of course, this means that the content of my log is going to deal with the details of my planning and the writing itself.
;)Right now I have the beginnings of a plot, some motivations, and two and a half characters.
The main character is a woman named Neriin. She doesn't consider herself anything special; that label belongs to her best friend, Azheir, who has the most sensitive bloodsense that the elders of their village have ever seen.
But when the man from the Academy in the valley comes to town and Azheir leaves with him so she can study and he can investigate her bloodsense, Neriin doesn't know who she is outside of the shadow of her talented friend, nor what she wants with her live now that nothing is like they had planned together.
¿razones? ¿responsiblidades? No sé. ;)) And here the plot escapes me a bit... Blah blah blah she wants to be with her friend but they won't let her leave for... reasons? responsibilities? Dunno. Blah blah blah just when she's about to leave the village, news of a plague in the valley arrive in town. (So Azheir is investigating the plague and its cure, but that's another story, something for next NaNoWriMo, perhaps.)
Ya no lo sé.Blah blah blah Neriin ends up responsibile for the village after other people flee. Blah blah blah Azheir asks for help for the plague's cure, which needs blood from the people of the village... or something like that. I'm not really sure.
Neriin has to decide if the village will help her old friend... even though that would also help the people of the valley who, historically, have exploited them. The village is divided and she is now in a position of leadership, and in a position against her friend.
FinEnd
:)So, that's what I have for now. As it's a story for NaNo, everything is subject to change without notice.

Truer words...

I suggest a sibling problem as the first reason why she can't simply up and follow her friend? Maybe a sibling becomes very ill (maybe even the first portent of the coming troubles?) and she has to stay to help her family keep on going?

Also, what's your NaNo name? I don't think we're friends there, although we have certainly talked there before. I'm EleniaDreams (I think. My profile picture there is the RL version of my pic here).

Also. Um. Languages? And stuff? Cool! Languages!

I would suggest at least 1 perhaps 2 other sub-plots. For example, a thief in the village stealing all the large clay pots and breaking them (reason to be discovered) and two church-going yet blood-feuding families fighting in and around the village.

:)

I like to lurk in the plot adoption section of the forum thinking up random sub-plots. bwaahhahahaha

I was thinking something similar. Especially if it's such a small village that there aren't "extra" people to take care of them.
I really like your suggestion that her relative is sick with some that maybe is, maybe isn't THE sickness...

I totally agree; a novel needs some subplots. It's simply that I still don't have the details clear in my head. But they'll definitely develop during the month!

Quizás se dieron cuenta de que la barra de progreso en mi "firma" aquí en el foro ya dice que ¡¡POR FIN HE CUMPLIDO TODAS MIS TARJETAS ATRASADAS DE ANKI!!Perhaps you've noticed that the progress bar in my signature here on the forum now says that I'VE FINALLY COMPLETED ALL MY OVERDUE ANKI CARDS!!
Me hace feliz, ¿saben? For most of the year, I ignored Anki and did almost no language study, not in Anki nor by other methods. But — despite the craziness that continues being my life right now — I've returned to studying. It makes me happy, y'know?
And since I'm a huge Anki nerd, it makes me happy to do cards, too. So I put myself to the task of leaving Anki in a good state for more studying again.
;)I'm about to recreate my own version of Cloze cards, but in pure Javascript, to have more control over them. We'll see if that ends up being a good idea or not...
