I have arrived in Japan, and it has been interesting to say the least! I’ve had money troubles, I’ve gotten lost, and I have misplaced items. While I was on the train I got some good bilingual announcements to pay attention to.
Everything was a little overwhelming, but there was a lot of English and I knew some Japanese to help me. I need to buy a map/maps, because I realized that I know how to read Japanese maps, so it would just be more helpful if I could buy some.
So that’s tomorrow’s plan: buy a map, and wander around Akihabara.

I can see how people would be able to live in Tokyo for years and never learn Japanese. Most things either have English or Icons so Japanese is not very necessary.
Also, just like everyone says, Japanese people are reserved, and don’t try to strike up conversations. Some people shy away from you out of fear of you speaking only English to them.
And I’m craving western fast food.

Today I spoke to exactly two persons, for an approx total (together) of 15 seconds, and all in English.
Japan is very quiet.

I am going to Japan this summer for 3 weeks, so will follow your thread with interest. Do you already speak any Japanese?

I went to the Kanda Myojin festival insead of Church today, I was planning on going next Sunday. I imagine there will be some speaking opportunities there.
My plans for today are getting really lost while trying to find my next hostel. So I might have opportunity to ask for directions.

Not really, just a few phrases and similar bits and peices. The few interactions I’ve had with people, they more or less understood my meaning, but it was hardly a conversation.

Are there any communal rooms in the hostels?

There are.
So far I’ve met German, French, Korean, And Chinese speakers. I’ve heard the owner speaking in Japanese a few times while I was half-asleep, but I’ve never met him.
