I'm thinking it probably had more to do with landmarks related to a certain music-themed anime. Though the matcha-flavoured sweets are good as well.

I definitely had my fair share of matcha related products (and now dearly miss them), but the points will have to go to vonPeterhof!

Sizen, did you manage to visit the Agata festival? I was planning on going last year, but it didn't work out.

I did not. I was in Japan in late April/early May, so I missed it by quite a bit. Though to be honest, I wouldn't have had the foresight to plan on going. Air Canada had a time-sensitive deal on tickets to Japan earlier this year, and so our planning was very last minute, to the point that we didn't have solid plans for every day of our trip. That also played in to the trip to Uji: we were in Kyoto and had seen all of the major tourist attractions and I remembered ユーフォ while we were thinking of other places to go. As it turns out, Uji is now one of my favourite cities in Japan and I think it would be my top choice if I were to live somewhere in Japan. It reminds me a lot of my hometown in Canada: not too small, not too big, close to major centres, clean and very green. Although, we don't have a UNESCO World Heritage Site where I live. ^^;

Ma question c'est de savoir si la majorité de la population éduquée est capable de lire ce script, ou bien si ça a été deja oublié pour de bon. Je me demande aussi la question pour ゐ/ヰ et ゑ/ヱ. Je sais que 'ヱ' apparait sur une canne de biere.

But now I know words like 航海灯 (koukaitou; marine navigation lights), 魚雷発射管 (gyoraihasshakan; torpedo tube), and 対潜迫撃砲 (taisenhakugekihou: anti-submarine mortar)!

Funny you mention that, one of the words I learned early on is 光子魚雷, totally useful. Now I can ask someone to launch photonic torpedoes, but basic manners still elude me.

Je te préviens, je suis loin d'être expert en la matière, mais à ma connaissance, le Japonais moyen sait pas lire les hentaigana. Y'en a certains que, en dépit d'être plus utilisés dans la vie quotidienne, les Japonais reconnaîtront peut-être, mais à moins que tu les aies étudiés, ils restent assez obscurs. C'est parfois possible de deviner leur lecture en réfléchissant au kanji de base ou au contexte dans lequel ils se trouvent, mais c'est pas toujours évident. Mais bon, il y en a des centaines alors on peut pas vraiment le leur reprocher : l'anglophone moyen saurait même pas te dire ce que signifient ð, þ et ƿ bien qu'ils aient été autrefois la norme.

Et pour ce qu'il en est de ゑ, ヱ, ゐ et ヰ, tout le monde les connaît, mais il sont rarement utilisés. Cependant, ils connaissent toujours une certaine popularité dans les cercles "otaku" dans quelques titres de films et noms de plume d'auteur.

Some people are aware of "ð" as the proper writing in signs like "Ye olde shoppe". That Y is a corruption.

So it's been a while. What looks like a giant hole in my studies has actually just been a lack of things to report. I've been chugging along with my anime viewings. Still reading manga and some novels. Trying also to enjoy some less geeky stuff, but it's a lot harder to find live action movies and the like in Canada, I find. At least, I'm not having any luck finding the ones I'd like to watch... I have been listening to some internet radio with a VPN, though.

Normally I don't watch that many shows per season, but this season I've ended up watching a lot: 宇宙よりも遠い場所 (南極探検隊 is probably my favourite this season)、ゆるキャン (Or maybe this is? I'm a sucker for 癒し系 and each episode of this one has been better than the last)、メルヘン・メドヘン (Miyazaki was right, anime was a mistake)、衛宮さんちの今日のご飯 (A cooking show based off a porn game about a millennia-long holy way? Sure, I've got nothing better to do)、博多豚骨ラーメンズ (Crossdressing hitman baseball?)、だがしかし (I watched the first season...)、citrus (I get ユリ姫コミックス ever month, so... yeah)、DARLING in the FRANXX (Trigger sure knows how to make a great show creepy and weird)、カードキャプターさくら クリアカード編 (You bet I'm watching Cardcaptor Sakura)、からかい上手の高木さん (I read the first chapter or so in a bookstore in Japan last year and was thinking about buying, but this sort of made that unnecessary)、たくのみ。 (I can't actually drink beer...)、三ツ星カラーズ (This one's enjoyable, I guess)、ヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデン (Please let this anime not suck in the end).

I've been trying to communicate more in Japanese. I'm not at the point where I was with French where even though I didn't practice speaking much if at all, I felt ready to start talking, but I'm starting to feel like it'll be too hard to make meaningful improvements now if I don't. I downloaded HelloTalk and have been taking the strategy of quantity over quality. I figure I'm going to meet a lot of "duds" so to speak, so I might as well contact as many people as possible until I click with some.

I find it really hard to just start cold with random strangers, though. I try to find people I have something in common with, and I bring it up in the first few messages, but it's so hit and miss whether or not the conversation continues. I feel like it's so much easier to get to know people in person. You can read their facial expressions and body language and you're always in the same place, so you've at least got that in common. People also don't tend to put down their phone and put a stop to the momentum you'd built up. -.-

Anyway, I won't make any promises about how often I'll update this log this time. If anything interesting happens, I'll make an update like I usually do. I might be going to Japan again this summer, so if that happens I'll have something exciting to talk about.

Fair enough. It's a bunch of kids piloting big robots by pulling steering mechanisms from their girlfriends' butts. A-1 Pictures can take the credit too if they really want it that badly.

^Hey, you don't know how it's been out there in the trenches, stuck between people shouting that "Trigger's only contribution to the show is one guy doing 'action supervision', so calling it a Trigger co-production is just a marketing gimmick!" and "There's no such thing as an 'A-1 Pictures show' because they're just a soulless sweatshop with no permanent staff!"

But yeah, it might legitimately be the case that Trigger people weren't the ones responsible for the more skeevy stuff this time; though I don't think there's information out yet about who exactly came up with the original concept.
