2021 - Summary of week 13

Two books finished, one in Swedish and one in English. I watched the documentary about the Trojan Horse (mentioned in the Classical Languages thread). I also passed on the link to a couple of history buff friends.

GA: At the end of the Easter weekend I watched the animated film Amhrán na Mara (Song of the sea) - Irish audio, English subtitles.

2021 - Summary of week 14

Apologies for the late summary. Last weekend was hectic. No books finished. Some of the time was spent on Perl. I had a look at what Youtube had to offer, and found Derek Banas's channel. I realized that I was already a subscriber so I must have watched something there a while ago. After finishing his Learn Perl in one video (~1 hour), I found these resources:
https://www.tutorialspoint.com/perl/index.htm
https://www.linuxlinks.com/excellent-fr ... earn-perl/
...and then https://perlmaven.com/beginner-perl-maven-video-course which is the one I'm currently using. As with many natural languages, I don't have any plans, goals or anything else.

Sure. ;) The faster, the better. I always thought that the Learn Perl in about 2 hours 30 minutes would be too slow, and a waste of time. ;)

Seriously, that 1 hour walk-through probably covers what you'd expect from say, a short grammar in a target language, or one of those Teach Yourself Quick & Easy [target language] books. (I'll leave it to real coders to judge.)

For the time being, I'm taking a multi-track approach. If it's good enough for Iguanamon...

There's more than one way to do it (TMTOWTDI or TIMTOWTDI, pronounced Tim Toady) is a Perl programming motto. Perl doesn't try to teach a programmer how to program.

Unlike Python (yuk) a language written for children which only allows one way to do things and uses whitespace as delimiter.

8-)

Learning Perl is like learning any spoken language. You'll learn a few words, then string together sentences, and then enjoy simple conversations. Mastery comes from practice of both reading and writing code. You don't have to understand every detail of Perl to be productive, but the principles in this chapter are essential to your growth as a programmer.

Other languages may claim that there should be only one best way to solve any problem. Perl allows you to decide what's most readable, most useful, most appealing, or most fun.

2021 - Summary of week 15

Hmm. Only three days late this time. I finished two books, one by James Patterson - 1st to die. It's my first book by him (or perhaps, his team of co-writers). I liked it a lot. Probably not the highest quality out there, but I don't care a bit. I'm in it for the action.)

NL: More Loyal Books content.

A short update, I know. I had one of the worst weeks in a long time. And it's getting worse.

I'm reading my first book by James Patterson too. It's a children's book translated into Spanish. I checked out his website and saw a mind boggling number of books and genres. Either he has a team or he doesn't need sleep and bathroom breaks. ;)

In Track Changes: A Literary History of Word Processing (by Matthew G. Kirschenbaum), there is some info about James Patterson's writing process. (Too long to quote here. It's on Google Books, flip to page 42...)

A very interesting look into "The Word Processor." The book itself looks very interesting as well. After I finish my James Patterson book about an escaped lab rat, I'll see if my library has it.
