2020 - Summary of week 17

Five books finished this week - one of them which I'm sure people here will find more interesting than anything else - The Complete Psionics Handbook (by Steve Winter, for AD&D 2nd Edition). I also watched another Danish series, When The Dust Settles / Når støvet har lagt sig (ten episodes).

EO: Reading in La Sankta Biblio.

FR: Reading fables.

GA: More podcasts.

PT: More stories. More Duolingo lessons.

I was lazy this week.

1st edition for the artwork on the hardcover books, 2nd edition for the rules (and campaign settings). Also the Basic Set and Expert Set of BECMI have a special place, for pure nostalgic reasons. (My first encounter with D&D in any incarnation.)

2020 - Summary of week 18

Three or four books finished this week. I watched a Swedish three-part documentary about thefts at the Royal Coin Cabinet (very interesting).

DE: Reading in Der Stumme Tod.

GA: More podcasts. Almost done with the whole series, which means radio programmes from several years. I also studied lessons 35-36 in Cúrsa Gaeilge.

PT: More stories. More Duolingo lessons. Reading in O Alquemista.

2020 - Summary of week 19

A bunch of books finished - among them, some comic books compilations (←each containing three or four normal albums), and the whole Roald Dahl companion volume. Not that it matters, but I counted a compilation as one book, and each section in the Roald Dahl as one (I think they were once published separately).

DE: I finished Der Stumme Tod.

EO: Some reading in La Sankta Biblio. (Is this one book or two, or more?)

FR: I finished the fables.

GA: I finished the podcast series. Then I went to back to the audio from Cúrsa Gaeilge, and finished that as well. Today I picked a new podcast series (which started in late February). I studied lessons 37-48 in Cúrsa Gaeilge, which also means that I finished the course.

PT: More Duolingo. I finished O Alquemista.

Can you please tell me a little about this 'Roald Dahl companion'? A web search doesn't bring up anything.

Is this a typo? Is it a compilation of all Mr Dahl's works?

Thanks. There's a 'Hornblower Companion' book, its mostly fluff, but it includes an essay where Mr Forester explains the beginnings of some stories. I thought this might be something similar from Mr Dahl.

I really like the Hornblower stories I've read. Many years ago, I looked for them in second-hand bookstores, only to find that the Swedish translations had been published under different titles in different series/editions with different number of volumes, making it nearly impossible to get the whole picture.
For instance, there is one Swedish title called Linjeskeppet Sutherland which one would assume is A Ship of the Line. But that one has the title Ett linjeskepp, and the ...Sutherland title is a translation of... Hornblower in Captivity, which isn't even part of the original series, but of the heavily edited "Cadet editions". :o (The third one, it seems. As it happens, based on A Ship of the Line (!) and Flying Colours.)

Talk about lost in translation.

2020 - Summary of week 20

Five books finished this week. Yesterday after finishing a collection of short stories, I grabbed a title which I've had in the bookshelf for ages - Slipt by Alan Dean Foster. I can't remember when/where/why I got it. I haven't read any of the author's works, but yesterday there was something about this book which said READ ME. So far, I like it a lot. (2/3 left.) I also watched the first part of the German dramatization of Siegfried Lenz's Der Überläufer. There's also some Polish dialogue. Just before the weekend, a friend and I had our second session of Warhammer Underworlds: Beastgrave. I won the first two games a month ago. This time I lost twice. :(

GA: More podcasts from the new series. I enjoy listening to politics and current affairs even if I don't understand everything. Give me another half year. Or decade.

PT: More Duolingo and stories.
