2022 - Summary of week 21

First of all - thanks for your comments. I have had a strange feeling this week. Iguanamon nailed it: No words in any language are sufficient.

I haven't done much language related except some reading and Anki.

IT: Loyal Books.

2022 - Summary of week 22

Reading. Anki.

Things are slowly getting back to normal. The tourist season has started which means that you hear a little more of other languages in town. This week's Mandarin exposure included a few phrases from the series Arrow and the film MEG.

SVT has a series called "Möte med [minority language]". Just by chance, I watched one episode in Finnish and yesterday another one in Romani. Also, UR (Utbildningsradion) has programs in the "school languages" - yesterday there was one in German.

2022 - Summary of week 23

Reading. Anki.

Lots of tourists. Today I heard German (no idea what they were talking about, but the prosody and timbre gave the group away). I watched one film in Mandarin - Ash is Purest White. Occasionally I understood a whole sentence. :)

One episode of A Place in the Sun: Home or Away featured an accent I couldn't pinpoint. But I had an idea. The other gaelgeoir in the area watched a few minutes and gave their verdict: Welsh (with some Scottish elements). *sigh of relief*

2022 - Summary of week 24

Reading. Anki.

The comedy show Taskmaster has a Swedish counterpart (Bäst i test), and recently SVT started showing the Norwegian one - Kongen befaler. Four of the five contestants are from Bergen! :) My favourite accent.

Summary of 2021

At last, the long awaited summary! (Stats from 2020 here.)

I realized that I had the numbers already half a year ago but somehow I never posted them.

1-5
Dutch - 319.25 hours: 312.75 listening (during my daily walks...), 6.5 reading (can't even remember what I read)
English - 104.25 hours of reading
Swedish - 104.25 hours of reading
French - 16 hours: 8 listening, 8 reading
German - 7 hours: 5 listening, 2 reading

Some comments:
Except for my Dutch, I barely did anything else than reading in my languages. My French hours took place during my summer vacation.

Books devoured?
242. Depending on how you count. 136 in Dutch (audio books of varying length), 70 in Swedish, 31 in English, 4 in German (2 easy readers, then another one + the audiobook)... Even if I don't count the audiobooks, it's still more than 100.

Still awake?

Awake, and astonished. An avid reader in my youth, I never read this many books in a year. Nor in college, where I had to do a lot of reading. Well done, sir.

2022 - Summary of week 25

Reading. Anki. Damn, it's hot around here. I don't have the energy to do much else than waiting for the sun to set.

This week I watched a youtube video which turned out to be in Cantonese. In the new series Around the world in 80 days, Passepartout is a polyglot. Besides English, we hear him speak French, Italian and Cantonese. (I haven't watched all episodes yet.) He says he also knows Russian. I also watched X-Men: Apocalypse which featured some dialogue in Arabic, German, Polish and Egyptian.

2022 - Summary of week 26

Reading. Anki. Still hot. At last the Thursday group met. We played our favourite game - Mansions of Madness. Scenario: Dark Reflections. Three stars. A mystery in two acts.
Investigators: Ursula Downs, Agatha Crane and Gloria Goldberg.
Investigation complete.

I watched the last episode of the ninth season of Badehotellet (Danish). Atle Antonsen (from Kongen befaler) is the main character in Kjære landsmenn (Norwegian).

No IRL interactions in other languages than English, but there is a lot of tourists in town nowadays. The horror.

2022 - Summary of week 27

Reading. Anki. Still hot.

The Thursday group met again. This time we played The Captain is Dead, a claustrophobic game onboard a space ship. (I think cards from the expansion Adrift were added). Fun to play, difficult to win. (However, I remember that we won one of the two scenarios last time.)

I started watching a series that someone I met recommended a while ago: Amelia - genom kärlek och krig (English: Amelia through love and war) / Dime Quién Soy: Mistress of War (original title). This series is based on the book Dime Quién Soy by Julia Navarro. Most of the dialogue is in Spanish, but as the story unfolds, we hear French, English, German and (so far) Russian. (It's a bit like the Ken Follett series I read last year. In other words, the history of the 20th century.)

I also finished the Finnish tv series Transport. (I watched it on SVTPlay. It's also on Yle.) It seems like the language is crawling back, little by little. I like the sound of it. I like the thought of studying it again - some day.

A lot of tourists in town.
