2018 - Summary of week 14

Yet another late summary. External factors get in the way.

CS: Vocabulary, sentence mining and Anki like last week. This will probably be my main activity until I'm finished with the lists.

DE: Ich habe Nachrichten von MDR Aktuell zugehört.

ES: Trabajé con la gramática con mi libro de ejercicios. Tuve el libro cuando aprendi español.

FR: J'ai étudié plus de grammaire avec ce livre (il a été utilisé pendant mes années de lycée).

Image

IT: More News in Slow Italian. So far, I only use the free option which means the introductory dialogue. The full podcast is rather long (up to 30 minutes), and it seems that it's accessible without being a full member. But then you don't get any transcripts. My current plan is to keep using these mini dialogues for a while - I've already noticed a lot of recurring vocabulary and similar themes. Who knows, maybe I'm ready for extensive listening after a few weeks.

RU: Time for some Echo Moskvy.

YUE: More podcasts. Most of the Cantonese101pod material has transcripts, but not everything. Occasionally, I watch a video lesson which doesn't have any notes. Sometimes the phrases are still in the dictionary, sometimes not. I think Ill finish this series within a week.

ZH: I did some more lessons from Da Shan's Travel in China. The lesson format is classic: a short dialogue, a closer look at some of the phrases, and then culture information and additional grammar points.

Next update in a day or two - I promise!

2018 - Summary of week 15

A not so late summary. First of all, too little sleep last week. One impressive hour between Thursday and Friday, and an half-hour nap later that Friday afternoon, then I was invited to an Irish music session in the evening. But of course I was very tired. Fifteen minutes before it was scheduled to start, I was still at home but decided to give it a chance. Good decision! We had great fun for a few hours. ("It's just like the pubs in Dublin!") The day after, there was a mini-festival with daytime workshops in a number of musical traditions, then an evening concert with four acts, and finally some impromptu music and dancing until the festival was officially over.

CS: Nothing new here. I add a lot to Anki and review everything daily.

DE: Ich habe mit Praktisk tyska gearbeitet.

ES: Leí unas páginas en Pippa Mediaslargas.

FR: J'ai continué à lire Maigret et le Clochard.

IT: Third week with News in Slow Italian! I'm getting accustomed to the voices and the topics.

RU: More grammar, or rather, more exercises which assume that I know the grammar inside out.

YUE: I'm not really finished with the podcast series but I will be during next week.

ZH: I listened to VOA Chinese. My listening skills leave a lot to be desired, but I'm getting there...

-----

I've finally made up my mind regarding the Polyglot Gathering. The closer it gets, the farther away it feels. I'll break my streak and will skip this year - probably also upcoming gatherings, unless things change. Sorry. (For a long time I've even had ideas for a couple of presentations. They're still on the drawing board, and it's likely that they'll stay there forever.)

2018 - Summary of week 16

A very late summary, and in order to catch up, it'll all be in English.

CS: More Anki and vocabulary lists.

DE: Another two hours of news from MDR Aktuell. So far, no music, just speech.

ES: Some extra focus on Duolingo, repeating sentences aloud.

FR: See above.

IT: Fourth week with News in Slow Italian! I can't believe that I've listened to 200 mini-podcasts (~2-3 minutes each).

PT: Focused Duolingo approach.

RU: A couple of interviews from Echo Moskvy.

YUE: I finally finished the podcast series and started another one, which seemed to be a mix of everything. Most of the lessons were taken from other playlists, and the remaining ones focused on initials, finals, tones, minimal pairs and what not.

ZH: More VOA Chinese.

2018 - Summary of week 17

Another summary in English. Not much changed from last week.

CS: More Anki and vocabulary lists. ~350 reviews every day, plus the words I add.

DE: I only had time to listen to news this week.

ES: Just Duolingo aloud.

FR: -"-.

GD: I finally signed up for Glossika and started with Gaelic. Listen and repeat. A lazy approach, as long as you do the daily reps. A normal session (with 10 new sentences) takes ~18 minutes, depending on settings and how I've graded previous sentences (some may disappear out of the rotation). I haven't changed the settings a lot - short pauses and sentences at x1 speed.

IT: Duolingo aloud.

PT: Duolingo + 600-700 Anki reviews every day.

RU: More interviews from Echo Moskvy.

YUE: New series! Back to the classic format with a short dialogue, then a section on certain words and grammar points, and finally the dialogue is repeated again.

ZH: More VOA Chinese.

I do something every day in a large number of languages, plus Anki reviews in maybe five-six others than those above.

2018 - Summary of week 18

What's this? A summary while it's still Sunday?

CA: Huh? Yet another language? Yeah, why not Catalan, while I'm in the mood. I've thought about it for quite some time, and now that I'm using the Glossika method, I gave it a go. 1040 reps during this first week.

CS: Words, words, words... Then I read the post about mistakes that beginners make. Learning words out of context. Yeah, I will change approach.

DE: More news. Sweden was even mentioned today. The World Table Tennis Championships took place in Halmstad (and ended today - two gold medals to China).

ES: Just Duolingo aloud.

FR: Duolingo aloud.

GD: More Gaelic - 1940 reps. For some reason, my Irish creeps in more during the Gaelic sessions than my Spanish does for Catalan.

IT: Duolingo aloud.

PT: Duolingo. I also heard some Portuguese on TV in one of those programs about Eurovision (as some of you might know, Portugal won last year, and now the event takes place in Lisbon.)

RU: More Echo Moskvy.

YUE: New series! Back to the classic format with a short dialogue, then a section on certain words and grammar points, and finally the dialogue is repeated again.

ZH: More VOA Chinese.

I finished three books today. Two in Swedish and one in English. 27 titles so far. This is embarrassingly slow.

2018 - Summary of week 19

This will look very similar to the previous week.

CA: The Catalan experiment goes on. After two weeks, the language doesn't feel alien. I have skimmed some Wiki articles just for fun. I like the look of the language, and I like the sound of it.

CS: This week I actually did change the approach. Each Anki card read aloud (in the Glossika manner).

DE: More news!

ES: Duolingo aloud.

FR: Duolingo aloud.

GD: More Gaelic. Another 150 reps per day (just like Catalan above).

IT: Duolingo aloud.

PT: Duolingo.

RU: More Echo Moskvy.

YUE: Anki sentences aloud.

ZH: More VOA Chinese.

Depending on how you see it, this may have been a lazy week (it definitely feels like that), but I've actually spent more focused time on the languages.

2018 - Summary of week 20

Sorry for this late update. I was on a mini-vacation last weekend, during which I heard some Finnish and also uttered a few phrases in the language.

CA: The third week of Catalan! I still like the language, and I hope the inspiration will last.

CS: More Anki aloud. No new cards for quite some time now. I'm fairly happy with my new approach.

DE: You know you've listened to too much news when you start recognizing the voices of the newscasters.

ES: Duolingo aloud.

FR: Duolingo aloud.

GD: Fourth week of Gaelic. Another 150 reps per day (just like Catalan above).

IT: Duolingo aloud.

PT: Duolingo and Anki.

RU: More Echo Moskvy.

YUE: Anki sentences aloud.

ZH: More VOA Chinese. Comprehension is still low, but it's easier to have the channel turned on and listen passively (that word again!) than to do grammar exercises.

Another lazy week, as you can see.

2018 - Summary of week 21

CA: The fourth week of Catalan! 4040 reps so far.

CS: More Anki aloud. No new cards for quite some time now. I'm fairly happy with my new approach.

DE: More news.

EO: Back to Esperanto! I had a look at https://learn.esperanto.com/ (a crash course in 12 mini lessons) and https://lernu.net/ (where I found a new course with more and longer lessons).

ES: Duolingo aloud.

FR: Duolingo aloud.

GD: Fifth week of Gaelic. 4940 reps.

IT: Duolingo aloud.

PT: Duolingo and Anki.

RU: More Echo Moskvy.

YUE: Anki sentences aloud.

ZH: More VOA Chinese.

Today is the official start of Polyglot Gathering 2018. Emotionally, it has never felt further away. I miss the Llorg company, though. Another time, another galaxy.

2018 - Summary of week 22

CA: The fifth week of Catalan! 4940 reps so far.

CS: More Anki aloud.

DE: More news.

EO: More Lernu - I plan to finish that course (26 lessons in total, it should only take another two weeks). Something that struck me is that some courses out there have a certain target group in mind: DLI - military service; FSI - diplomats; phrase books - tourists; and so on. (Contemporary) Esperanto courses assume that I'm a young adult who is backpacking and/or eager to join the IJK. In the current course, there's a time machine... (I had the similar feeling about one of the DW courses in German - clearly a time travelling radio drama which could entertain a younger audience.) Are there Esperanto courses out there aimed for, well, the average learner?

ES: Duolingo aloud.

FR: Duolingo aloud.

GD: Sixth week of Gaelic. 5990 reps.

IT: Duolingo aloud. I also watched a Youtube clip or two of Italian.

PT: Duolingo and Anki. New skills suddenly appeared in Duolingo.

RU: More Echo Moskvy.

YUE: Anki sentences aloud. I don't know what to call it - sentence practice (=grammar) or some kind of shadowing. I'm doing both.

ZH: More VOA Chinese.

Hardly any Irish except Duolingo and Anki. And the occasional Youtube clip.

I finished three books (all in Swedish).
