2024 - Summary of week 13

Reading. Two books finished - Soulless by Gail Carriger, and Vad vi äter (original title: Ultra-Processed People) by Chris van Tulleken.

No Saturday concert, but I attended Easter Vigil Mass. Sunday morning I saw an interview with someone on TV. The person spoke Spanish, but the pronunciation had some features I don't associate with Spanish. Rather some other (Ibero-)Romance language. Could be Portuguese, could be Catalan. Or something else. A quick Google search showed that the person was born in Galicia. Later today I heard Spanish at the local bakery.

DE: More Librivox.

2024 - Summary of week 14

Reading. Two books finished - Changeless (by Gail Carriger) and Det som inte syns by duo Benny Haag (actor, writer, lecturer) and Lennart Karlsson (DEA agent).

I had a flute lesson on Tuesday afternoon. A bunch of valueable exercises..

Still thinking about doing something with my (now) rudimentary Mandarin.

2024 - Summary of week 15

Reading. One book finished - Det uppenbara by duo Benny Haag and Lennart Karlsson. It's the sequel. Volume three will be published by the end of this month.

I got a cold just before the weekend, and it hit me like a truck. No concert. No Rubik's Cube competition. No simultaneous chess. No second concert. Nothing but rest.

DE: More Librivox. Current title on my playlist: Der Antichrist by Friedrich Nietzsche ... Exciting, I know.

Cold-fighting brothers-in-arms! The veritable tsunami of viruses has been relentless here over the past couple of months. Unusually nasty long ones too. Sorry to hear you've also been hit by the deluge and hope you feel better soon!

↑ Thanks for the support, Teango! I'm feeling a lot better now. Just an irritating cough. (Which I'm driving out with tea, exercises, rest and will power. 8-) )

2024 - Summary of week 16

Reading. One book finished - Blameless (by Gail Carriger). I'm on the waiting list for part five of the series. Or, if the trend continues:
The Parasol Protectorate: Book the Fifth

I went to the Saturday concert. A church organ player and her student took turns playing pieces by C. Chaminade, J.S. Bach, F. Mendelssohn and M Kuhlman.

Sami is one of five recognized minority languages in Sweden. As it happens, I watched a few minutes of 15 minuter från Sápmi on SVT2.

DE: More Librivox. Elsewhere, DaveAgain shared a link to ARD's radio dramas. That'll be a lot more fun to listen to than some of the Librivox recordings.

ARD have audiobooks too, I just prefer the dramas :-) I think they must have an official relationship with archive.org as a lot of their stuff shows up there as well.

2024 - Summary of week 17

Reading. A few books finished, among them Passagerare 23 by Sebastian Fitzek and I spindelns nät by Rachel Caine (EN: Stillhouse Lake). I have two more in that series. I started reading Babel by R. F. Kuang which has been described as a historical fantasy epic (Goodreads). So far, it feels like Lev Grossman's The Magicians series but with languages instead of magic. I like it a lot.

The Saturday concert featured music on cello and organ:
J. S. Bach - from cello suite 1 in G (BWV 1007)
  • Sarabande
  • Menuet I and II
Gustaf Hägg - from Sex orgelstycken för orgelharmonium
  • Bön
  • Högtidsmarsch
  • Idyll
  • Melodi
Jean Langlais - from Vingt-quatre Pièce pour orgue
  • XV Prière
  • XVI Choral orne
  • XVII Pour une sainte de légende
Torsten Sörenson - from Brevarium Musieum
  • Preludio e fuga
  • Lamento
  • Improvvisazione
Anton Linnerhed - from En liten orgelmässa
  • Kyrie
  • Gloria
  • Credo
  • Sanctus
  • Agnus Dei

2024 - Summary of week 18

Reading. Two books finished: Hämnaren (EN: Killman Creek) and Blodsband (EN: Wolfhunter River) - both by Rachel Caine.

The other gaeilgeoir in the area came back from a trip to the Azores. During lunch we chatted about Portuguese orthography and pronunciation.

The Saturday concert featured music played on the 1599 organ:
Johann STADEN - Allamanda virirt
Abraham van den KERCKHOVEN - Fantasia in d
Antonio GARDANE - Le forze d'Hercole
David SCHEDLICH - Ballet
Pierre ATTAINGNANT - Tourdion
Anonymous - La Paduana del Re
William BYRD - Galliarde to the third Pavan
Georg BÖHM - Koralfantasi ”Vater unser im Himmelreich”
Johann Caspar KERLL - Capriccio sopra il Cucu
Tylman SUSATO - La Mourisque

In the evening I discovered a youtube channel I hadn't seen before - Polyglot Dreams. I remember Tim Keeley from gatherings in Berlin (and later, Bratislava).

2024 - Summary of week 19

Reading. A handful of books finished, e.g. Änkan (NO: Enken) by Helene Flood - a psychological thriller; Babel by R. F. Kuang, and Vägen hem (DE: Der Heimweg) by Sebastian Fitzek.

Some translation work for the new release of our ILS. Other than this? Eurovision. I almost fell asleep halfway through the final.
