Re: Lingua's Italian, Sicilian & Latin Log

Italian

memrise: 4199/5304 continue to review and add new words

film: total of 118 minutes
YouTube: Cucine da incubo; 3 episodes: Golfo di Mondello (Milano), Boja Fauss (Torino, Du Patrinu (Messina)
This is similar to Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. I don't know if it's by the same producers or just a copied idea. The host (Antonino Cannavacciuolo) was at one time a MasterChef Italia judge.

books: Ciao, tu: Indovinami, scoprimi, sappiamo by Beatrice Masini e Roberto Piumini
This is a very short 77 page YA book that is strange. It is a conversation between a boy and a girl who have not met. I'm about 25% through it and plan to complete it by this weekend.

I've been inspired by rdearman's goal of reading 100 actual Italian books for the SC and am going to attempt to do so as well though I will be starting with shorter books for these first few months to regain some lost fluidity

Goals: read 30 minutes per night, do memrise, continue edX course, watch film and listen to podcasts

Latin
memrise: 1109/1856 continue to review and add new words

Clozemaster: total of 70 minutes
I never liked Clozemaster for Italian but it seems to work for me in Latin. I'm starting to study the sentences as I fill them in. Each day I make the goal of ranking as #1 for the week which takes about 20 minutes or so usually.

Latinitium: #1, #2
I really like this site (https://www.latinitium.com/) that I just found on Youtube a couple of days ago. It is also mentioned in the Latin sources here. They have each episode in podcast, video (with latin subtitles) and transcript format. I prefer the videos because the drawings help. I plan to go back and study the transcripts.

Goals: do lesson 8 of the mooc this weekend, memrise, Clozemaster & Latinitium

I'm attempting to average two hours a day for the 6WC but so far have not. How do people find time to study 4 or more hours per day? Presumably, they don't work.

Sicilian
memrise: 63/97 continue to review and add new words at a slow pace
Studied days of week and useful phrases

Goals: continue with Memrise, Youtube and Chapter 1 of the text.

I keep getting distracted by new sites for all of my languages and need to stay better focused.

Italian

memrise: continue to review and add new words

film: total of 293 minutes
MHz Choice: Don Matteo: Il fratello di Natalina, Crisi sentimentale; L'ultimo Padrino (part 1 & 2)
L'ultimo Padrino is based on former Mafia boss Bernardo Provenzano and the cops who tried to catch him. I'm not sure being on the run for 40 some years living mostly in isolation is all that much better than being incarcerated. It's another kind of prison.

books: Ciao, tu: Indovinami, scoprimi, sappiamo by Beatrice Masini e Roberto Piumini <-- completed
Cucinare con i fiori e con le erbe di campo by Giulia Landini <-- started (about 25% read)
In spite of the author having an Italian name on the current book the language used seems strange to me as if it were translated. I'm looking up words that are synonyms to more commonly used verbs. It's a self-published book from https://www.area51editore.com/ which has quite a few short books available for only a few dollars. They also have some podcasts. This one has only 93 pages and is in the category of alternative medicine.

edX mooc: I finally completed Unit 5. I did well on 3 out of 4 tests but for some reason had some issues with superlatives which seems odd since I do understand them. I'm not planning to revisit my problem areas until I've completed all units. I will begin Unit 6 soon with the goal of completing it in a couple of weeks.

Latin

memrise: continue to review and add new words

Clozemaster: I inadvertently deleted my Latin while I was trying out some other languages. So I had to start over which was disappointing. The redundancy of redoing prior sentences is probably not a bad thing at my current low level.

Latinitium: #3-9 The narrators voice is pleasant and clear to listen to. I continue to watch them with Latin subtitles. Once I go through them all I'll start over with the transcripts.

I'm tracking all three of my languages on the 6WC trying to keep Latin at 50%. So far it's working.

Sicilian
memrise: continue to review -- I'm not doing anything but memrise for Sicilian until the 6WC is over. Just enough to keep the words in my head.

Yes, I'm learning Sicilian for real. As an aside, we would say "for real" not "for true" in this case. It started because I'm a huge Camilleri/Montalbano fan and want to read the Camilleri books in Italian. I've read most of them in English but translations are often missing something.

I recognized the name Franco Battiato. As it turns out I have an album I bought from itunes some years ago called La Convenzione with Franco battiato, Juri Camisasca & Osage Tribe. Stranizza Dammuri is on this album.

This is the song I like from Il giovane Montalbano:

Beautiful song, maybe the singer could have more sentiment, but sings well and it's probably just my taste

Bella canzone, forse la cantante poteva avere più sentimenti, ma canta bene ed è probabilmente solo un mio gusto

Italian

memrise: continue to review and add new words

film: total of 198 minutes
MHz Choice: Don Matteo: Il tesoro di Orfeo, Una buona annata
YouTube: Cucine da incubo Ristorante L'Altro Sostegno (Roma), Ai Platani (Albese Con Cassano)

books: Cucinare con i fiori e con le erbe di campo by Giulia Landini <--about 65% read
II plan to complete this one within the next couple of days and start something new

Latin

memrise: continue to review and add new words

Clozemaster: Continue to review and do new sentences daily

Latinitium: #10-15
ScorpioMartianus showed up on the YouTube sidebar and one was on pronunciation so I listened to a couple of the videos and liked them He speaks in Latin but has subtitles in latin and Englihs which I found to be helpful.

utinettuno mooc: #8 finally complete so next goal is #9 for this weekend

Sicilian
memrise: continue to review

Piemontèis

Closemaster has about 500 sentences for Italian/Piemontèis so I've been doing just a few minutes per day. It's a little different but still not difficult since it shares many words that are similar to Italian. I am only dabbling with this one but I have long had an interest in the various languages/dialects spoken in Italy but there is very little in the way of materials for most of them so I'm taking advantage when I find them.

I completed book #2 of the SC. It was a whole 93 pages. This is self published though the author is allegedly a writer/journalist. I didn't care for her style of writing. The book talks about how to pick wild herbs and dry them. For each herb it goes over where it grows, what conditions it likes, it's season followed by it's supposed health benefits. Last it discusses ways to use it in food. The last section had some recipes. Some of the recipes actually sounded good for making vegetables more appealing but I kept wondering when she was getting to the meat/fish recipes. I later found out the author is a vegetarian. Unless you have a strong interest in the subject matter I wouldn't recommend the book.
