Latin

Listened to mooc course: Lesson 3: First & Second Declension
I still need to do the exercises for this lesson. I truly enjoy listening to the professor. He has a pleasant voice and speaks so clearly that I understand every Italian word he says.

Thai

Completed Module #1 of Learn Thai Podcast which was a 2016 goal in another thread. This module includes Phrase Lessons, Beginner Lesson Cycles and 300 Most Common Thai Words. In Thai for Intermediate Learners Becker says you should have a vocabulary of 400 words prior to starting the book. While I'm confident I know 400+ words I am equally confident that I can only correctly spell a subset of them. I plan to review the 300 words while working on the Thai Pod 101 Absolute Beginner lessons in an attempt to improve my spelling skills

Re: Lingua's Italian, Thai & Latin Log

Italian

memrise: 3179/9565

italki: Three one-hour sessions

film:
Don Matteo: The Actor
A Case of Conscience: Self-Defense, Heart Valves & An Arsenal at Home
MasterChef Italia Stagione 5 Episodi 1-8 I have no problem understanding the hosts of this show but the contestants are another story. The show even has Italian subtitles every so often either because they weren't clear or their voice(s) were too low.

book: Continued reading Quando la notte by Cristina Comencini. I am reading rather slowly as it's a OK book but not great.

Latin

memrise: 46/140

No other Latin this week. I had intended to do Lesson 4 this weekend but I went a little crazy with the Italian MasterChef series. I may still get to it tonight.

Thai

memrise: 1380/2408

film: iron chef thailand: iron chef kids - ep6 - battle - 11/06/2016

One two-hour tutoring session.

I wrote words/sentences for about 15 minutes each day. For whatever reason writing by hand is more helpful to me than writing on the computer. I do a little of both. I remember when I first started with the keyboard I found it so difficult but now I can go by touch for most of the characters that don't require a shift since they are the most used. Outside of the numbers I usually have to search for anything that requires the shift key. In spite of there being over 60 characters between consonants, vowels and accents it seems that only about half of them are used for most words.

Italian

memrise: 3256/9588

italki: Three one-hour sessions

film:
Don Matteo: Blackmail & The Scorpion's Strategy
MasterChef Italia Stagione 5 Episodi 9-24
MasterChef Italia Stagione 1 Episodi 1-6

book: I'm about half way through Quando la notte. About a third of the way through I finally got into the book and expect to finish it this week.

Latin

memrise: 79/1136

Listened to mooc course: Lesson 4: Third Declension

At the moment I'm trying to increase my Latin vocabulary so I can start reading the Learn Latin with Aesop reader that I bought.

Thai

memrise: 1410/2408

film: foodtraveltv : ปอเปี๊ยะไส้เห็ดเจ (อาหารเจ)
iron chef thailand: iron chef kids - ep7 - battle - 18/06/2016
iron chef thailand: iron chef kids - ep8 - tag team - 25/06/2016

I didn't like the last Iron Chef Kids episode. Too much running around and not enough cooking. The next three episodes are also "tag team" style so I hope they aren't going to be like this one.

One two-hour tutoring session where we conversed and went over vocabulary.

My interest in Thai is waning a bit recently. I will be doing the 6WC starting in November in hopes of reigniting my enthusiasm for the language.

Italian

memrise: 3327/9606

italki: One one-hour session

film: MasterChef Italia Stagione 1 Episodi 7-24 which puts me solidly over the halfway mark on the double SC I'm doing.

book: Finished Quando la notte so I'll start a new (preferably short) book soon.

Latin

memrise: 109/1136

Read various pages of the books I've purchased. Decided to postpone lesson 5 of the mooc course until next week to concentrate on making sure I can remember what I've learned thus far.

Thai

memrise: 1441/2409

One two-hour tutoring session where we conversed and went over vocabulary like usual.

I have a small Thai cookbook and I've decided to start reading it which means I must first translate so the goal will be to do one recipe a week initially. I imagine that I will start seeing a lot of the same words for ingredients, measurements and even instructions so I can increase my speed after a few weeks. It has only 62 pages and half of them are a photo of the dish. I feel like I need to change the way I'm studying Thai. Learning more cooking terms and food items should help me recognize more words when watching Thai cooking shows.

Italian

memrise: 3350/8173

italki: Three one-hour sessions

film: MasterChef Italia Stagione 2 Episodi 1-14

book: Started Cerco Sapori in Piazza Grande by Bruno Barbieri, a chef who is one of the judges on MasterChef Italia. I am enjoying this book. It consists of 70 ingredients along with 70 recipes. For each ingredient Barbieri explains which months it's availailable (as applicable), what other ingredients it goes with and includes a recipe. It's the perfect balance of information and creativity.

Latin

memrise: 186/1325

I did no other studying of Latin this week since I upped my time with Thai. I had intended to do lesson 5 of the mooc course but didn't get to it. I'll make more of an effort to get to it this coming week.

Thai

memrise: 1490/2366

film:
Iron Chef Thailand Kids: episodes 9-15 (which completed the series)
Iron Chef Thailand: Battles and cooking w/Iron Chef

One two-hour tutoring session.

I managed to add the ingredients for the first recipe from the Thai cookbook to memrise and concentrated on learning those words.

Thai 6WC

187 min SRS
50 min reading/writing
120 min tutoring session (vocab/speaking)
527 min film (Iron Chef Thailand)
----------------------------------------
884 min total for avg of 126 min per day

I am aiming for an average of two hours per day so I consider this a success.

Goal for week two is to spend a little more time on ThaiPod101 and reading/writing.

Learning through cooking is such an awesome way to learn thai. I like to use a website called ezythaicooking.com because you can switch between English and Thai really quickly which makes it easy to translate where you aren't sure with some ingredients - also a wide variety of dishes covering just about everything.

Is that cookbook mainly noodle dishes??

Thanks for the link Hanuman ... I'll check it out. And yes this is a noodles cookbook. There are at least six cookbooks in this series and my husband will pick up one of the soup ones the next time he goes to Thailand. He said they're only 200 baht.

Italian

memrise: 3363/8173
italki: Three one-hour sessions
film: MasterChef Italia Stagione 2 Episodi 15-22 & Stagione 3 Episodi 1-17
Una giornata con lo chef Cannavacciuolo di Cucine da Incubo
book: Continued to read Cerco Sapori in Piazza Grande very slowly because I fall asleep after only reading a few pages.

Latin

memrise: 196/392
Listened to mooc course: Lesson 5: Fourth & Fifth Declension

Thai

memrise: 1495/2366
film: Iron Chef Thailand: Season 5, Episodes 61, 44, 60, 5-8
One two-hour tutoring session (vocab and talking)

memrise had a seriously broken system this week so I gave up on using it until the last couple of days. In spite of trying to find an alternative none of them have panned out so I continue to use it. I've also tried the various duolingo, clozemaster and other such sites but I find myself quickly bored with them so I continue to use memrise which I still find tolerable. I never used SRS until this year and I know some people aren't fans of it but I see a benefit from it when I read Italian in that I often recognize that a word I now know is one I learned using SRS. I look up words while reading using the dictionary function on my Kindle but for some reason those words don't stay with me and I end looking them up again and again. I believe the action of writing the word many times is what makes it stick with me. When I took my three years of Italian language courses I always wrote the vocabulary words several times between classes and it seemed to help me to remember them.

Unfortunately, Latin is causing me to develop an interest in Classic Greek so I am learning the complete alphabet and sounds right now but I don't think I will be taking it up this year or even next since I still want to return to German and restart Portuguese in that time frame.

Italian

memrise: 3524/8175
italki: Three one-hour sessions
book: still reading Cerco Sapori in Piazza Grande

film:
MasterChef Italia Stagione 3 Episodi 18-24
Cucine da Incubo (3 episodi)

Latin

memrise: 295/356
book: read/study the first Aesop tale (Accipiter et Columbae)

I will likely listen to the next mooc lesson later today

Thai

memrise: 1548/2362
film: Iron Chef Thailand: Season 5, Episodes 10-12 & Season 2, Episodes 1-3
One two-hour tutoring session (vocab and talking)
book: continued to translate/read recipe (it's going much slower than I had hoped)
6WC: I have logged 1794 hours through yesterday. Averaging only 94 mins a day so my goals are not being met.

I have a long weekend coming up because of Thanksgiving which should provide some more study time in spite of a number of social obligations.
