One of the classic Polish songs from the 70's is Odpływają Kawiarenki. I'm not excatly sure how the song's title translates into English but Odpływać is the verb for 'sail away' or 'drift away' and kawiarenki are 'little cafes' or 'little coffeehouses'. The song was written in 1975 by Jerzy Kleyny, composed by Wojciech Trzciński and originally performed by Irena Jarocka. There have been numerous cover versions since, but the one below is the best I've heard to date. An enchanting song beatifully sung, filmed in Prague.
Enjoy....

ona z nim i on z nią.
Kawiarenki, kawiarenki,
porwą gdzieś w siódme niebo aż stolik nasz......

JANUARY PROGRESS REPORT

Listening (minutes) : 1780 / 25,000
Writing (words) : 2563 / 50,000

Over the last couple of years I've let my language studies drift and my routines slide, so I decided to sign up for both the Output and the 365 Day Challenges. I already completed a reading challenge (1,000,000 words) a while ago, so for 2020 I want to concentrate on listening (25,000 minutes, or 416 hours) and writing (50,000 words).

I'm listening to RealPolish and finishing the stories I subscribed to last year. These are very short simple stories that, whilst I understand without too much difficulty, test my ability to pick up finer details. Most of my listening comprises of radio or YouTube podcasts. Once I've found someone with a clear unhurried voice, I listen to their channel even if the content does not especially interest me (but doesn't bore me stiff either). I think it would benefit me to get into a TV serial to test my ability to follow colloquial speech, fast speech and engage-reengage with a variety of voices. I used to watch the serial 'Samo Życie' so I might go back to that. Another possibility is 'Lombard: Życie pod Zastaw' which I watched when I was in Poland last year and found strangely compelling. Suggestions welcome !!

With so much input over the years, 2020 is my first proper attempt at output (writing) in any systematic way. It's been painfully slow so far, but I have written something every day, even if it's been only a sentence. It takes me about an hour to write 120-150 words. The first draft is fairly quick - I try to recall syntactical patterns, common phrases, case governance, correct prepositions e.g do I need 'w', 'na', 'z' or 'do' here? If I don't know the Polish word I'll either find a suitable alternative, circumlocute or write in English.
Then I copy and paste the draft into Google Translate and see if it approximates to a correct English translation. I adjust the text to weed out obvious mistakes and typos. Then I go through it again line by line, copying any suspect phrase and pasting it into Google Search to see if such a phrase exists in regular Polish or if I need to tweek things further. This is a cheap and dirty way of self-correcting. Ideally I would like a tutor to check everything. I used Lang8 for a while but sometimes got conflicting corrections and feedback. Here is a list of things I've written in January that I'm still not sure about:

1. Kiedy przyjechaliśmy, bardzo zdziwiłem się widzieć [byłem bardzo zaskoczony widząc] jedną przyjaciółkę.
2. Nie lubiłem ani oliwek, ani kaparów; były zbyt słone, a mój język skurczył się na ich smak.
3. Jeśli mógłbyś być jakąś [jakąkolwiek] postacią fikcyjną...
4. ... kogo byś wybrał [wybrałbyś] i dlaczego? Which form is more suitable? Does it matter?
5. Wędrował po pustyni, krzycząc na wszystko i wszystkich.
6. Stał w ryczącym wiatrze i deszczu, otoczony błyskawicą, wykrzycząc swoje nieszczęścia.
7. ...był ślepy z poczuciem własnej ważności...
8. Nie miałem dużo wolnego czasu, poza weekendami [oprócz weekendów].
9. W poniedziałki zgłaszam się na ochotnika w agencji.
10. Talony na książki lub ubrania są również upominkami powitalnymi.

There's more, but that's enough for now. I welcome all corrections and comments, thanks in advance!

Nothing sophisticated this month, just some cheesey pop.

If you haven't watched it yet, my TV show suggestion is Ultraviolet (available on Netflix). It's a native Polish show, there are both English and Polish subtitles available.
