Всем привет!
I'm new here, but I've decided to take part in the TAC for Russian. I've been studying Russian for a little over 2 years, and I'm not very satisfied with my progress so I plan to dedicate this year to Russian to see how much I can achieve. I typically take formal Russian classes, but I've been self-studying more than usual for the past few weeks and I've been able to learn a lot more this way. However, I still have a long way to go, and I hope that it will be cathartic to record my progress/experiences/frustrations with the language here. Additionally, I will be heading to Russia in a few days, and I'll be there for a while so now is definitely the time to be making progress.

Furthermore, I also study Portuguese and Spanish off and on, so I will occasionally post updates for those languages! I typically just stick to reading and watching YouTube videos for them, so it's nothing too strenuous.

Alright, now to the log. In the past week I realized that I had some large gaps in my knowledge of Russian grammar, so I spent some time finally learning how to properly construct participles and how to decline cardinal numbers. I also finally figured out the correct way to use обо/обе and "и...и" constructions, which doesn't mean that I still won't occasionally make mistakes with them in the future. Other than the grammar, I've been reading Russian blogs and forums intensively and watching a lot of Russian videos. Overall, it's been a productive time for me, so I hope to continue at this pace!

Even though I have not been actively updating my log, I have been studying a lot of Russian. Я каждый день смотрю новости первого канала, когда завтракаю. Это труднее для меня чем другие видео (как влоги), потому что они быстро проӣдут через многие темы, и мне легче, когда по полной концентрирую на одной теме. Но, это становится более лёгким каждый раз. Я также начала читать статьи по-русски из Global Voices, и иногда я пишу каждое непонятное слово, кладу их в квизлет и их учу. Это мне очень помогает, так я хочу продолжать. Кроме это я пытаюсь широко читать, даже когда страдаю. Но, вообще я горжусь, что ежедневно занимаюсь русским, потому что лучше с рутиной.

Иначе, я приехала в Питер два дня назад, и я ещё не привыкаю к часовому поясу. Но, мне просто надо спать хорошо и всё станет лучшим! Расскажу больше про поездку, после того, как я много сплю.

Today, I learned about the Russian verbal adverbs a bit more indepthly than I had before. It feels nice when something that you've always noticed finally becomes clear to you. Unfortunately, I haven't been doing much reading recently, but I have had a lot of opportunities to talk to people in Saint Petersbourg. Especially today when I got completely lost and spent 3 hours trying to find where I live Luckily, I was able to ask people for directions just fine. While I enjoyed being able to practice, I'd like to avoid this scenario in the future. It's much more enjoyable to have conversations when you're not filled with anxiety.

Кроме этого, я ходила домой книг, и мне было весело смотреть на все русские книги. Я наверно куплю несколько, пока я здесь. В книжном магазине также были книги на иностранных языках, и мне очень понравилась эта часть магазина. Ну, это всё сегодня. Пока!

Во вторник мои русские занятия начались в России. Чтобы узнать мой уровень и записаться на занятия, я написала короткий тест. Что касается теста, то у меня уровень "Б2," так я должна записаться на занятия, в которых люди пытаются достичь уровень "С1". Тем не менее, я не согласна с тестом так, как я знаю, что мой уровень не такой высокий. Может быть я читаю и понимаю по-русски как человек, у которого уровень "Б2," но я говорю, как человек с уровнем "Б1." Так, теперь у меня проблема. Должна ли я учится с группой "Б2" или с больше лёгкой группой? Я сама не знаю. Может быть с группой "Б2" я скоро привыкну к их уровню, или может быть я буду чувствовать себя плохо и без мотивации. Однако, с другой группой я может не страдать так много, и с спокойном умом будет легче говорить и иметь уверенность в себе. Я затрудняю с выбором, из-за того, что я не знаю, когда у меня будет такая хорошая возможность учиться русскому языку, так я хочу научиться как можно больше. Если бы у кого-нибудь совет, я была бы очень рада услышать!

Summary: So, this week I started taking Russian classes in Russia, and I'm a little worried that they might be too advanced for me. If anyone would like to give their opinion, should I stick it out or go to an easier level?

Russian

Since I've been taking classes in Russia, my Russian has been improving by leaps and bounds. The sheer number of words to which I've been exposed and have subsequently picked up amazes me although there are, of course, loads more to learn. I'm taking a class on translation that goes into all of the intricacies of word order in higher level Russian. This class, along with the grammar class that I'm taking, really appeals to the analytical side of me that misses the math classes that I stopped taking when I started university. My brain feels ready to burst with all of the new information, but I'm taking that as a good sign
Furthermore, I've always felt that my active skills were my weakest skills in Russian (or really any language frankly speaking), so I've gotten in the habit of writing a few substantial paragraphs every day in Russian. This practice already seems to be helping me a lot!

Spanish and Portuguese

While I haven't done much with my Romance languages recently, I ended up having some spare time today so I watched several videos in Spanish and Portuguese. It's only been about a month or two since I last studied them actively, so they've stayed the same. The little bit of exposure that I had to them today made me feel nostalgic but also excited to return to them this summer after my stay in Russia.

Dutch, Italian, and French

Just for the fun, I decided to experiment with the Duolingo app for Dutch and Italian. I don't have a specific reason to learn either language at the moment, but some day I would like to have a fundamental knowledge of them at the very least. I also watched some French videos today for listening practice because I plan to take a French class some time next fall.

All in all, it's already been a great week!
