How's your Spanish coming along?

Do you ever bother looking up the meaning of unknown words while you're watching something (even using google translate), or do you simply go with the flow and let context and further repetitions take care those mysterious and ever so elusive carriers of meaning?

How yes no.

Today I clocked in 100 "sterling" hours of listening to Spanish. To celebrate, I decided to read my first book. I first grabbed Ficciones, but I settled on something more colorful:

"El lobo que quería ser una oveja"
by Mario Ramos

Book blurbs:

Yo he tocado las nubes!"

Torpedo-1936-abuli-bernet.jpg

Edit: In my memory "Torpedo" has always been a super-cool cult comic. Upon second reading, I have discovered themes that may not be appreciated by all the readers.

llaman Luca... Luca "the Torpedo".

Me ofreció mil pavos.

Entonces no me dio.

So begins the story of Torpedo 1936, the cult graphic novel by Sánchez Abulí and Jordi Bernet (the first two stories were drawn by Alex Toth). Torpedo reads a bit as if Jim Thompson's novels were adapted into the comic book genre.

**STRONG LANGUAGE**
Possible typos

Torpedo 1936

Monada – pretty girl, lovely thing
Pescuezo – neck (figured out from "torcer")
Cola - tail
Ladrar - to bark
Moco mucus, booger
Sacudir shake dust, smack, beat (had this several times already)
salir rana to be a major disappointment (looked up)
Borrar to rub out, delete (also figuratively)
poner tierra de por medio - to get away as quickly as possible (figured it out but looked up anyway)

Soltar plomo
Cargarse to bump off (kill)
Chaval (niño) a kid
darse el piro de - to escape from; darse el piro to beat it, escape
me hago cargo – I understand, realize (right before he bumped him off)
no olvides tomar vitaminas (to a kid who swore he would kill him)
estar o quedarse tan campante to be quite unruffled (looked up - understood the main point from the story and Italian "campare")
Furcia – whore (looked up, to understand the derogatory level)
did not understand this at first presupuesto...supposed did not quite make sense. Budget makes a lot of sense, in hindsight.
Echar TRANSITIVE VERB 1. (to propel) a. to throw
Polvo screw (vulgar); echar un polvo – screw
perder los estribos (enfadarse) to lose one's temper; blow one's top (familiar)

cantar las cuarenta a alguien to tell somebody a few home truths; tell sb a thing or two
lío n. masc. (colloquial) confusion, mess
hacerse un lío to get into a muddle; get mixed up; se hizo un lío con tantos nombres he got into a muddle with all the names

No quería testigos.

Escarmiento punishment, lesson, warning

Entre rejas between bars
Se suicidió en su celda meses después
Fonda boarding house

(encontrarse mejor - feel better - had that before)

Donde está ahora?
Me ha dicho que va a coger un tren…

At being asked why he didn’t warn the other guy from New York:

Una conferencia vale mucho dinero. Desde aquí es más barato…
No vas a matarme, verdad?

I'm almost finished with the first Torpedo album. Took a break from it with "Huevos Duros" by Marisa Nuñez & Teresa Lima:

"Tengo un árbol con doce ramas;
Cada rama tiene treinta hojas;
Cada hoja, dos caras.
Si en siete dias
No acertáis el valor de mi árbol,
iréis al calabozo."

Very context-rich material.

Calabozo – prison, dungeon
Parar: stop. I knew this from before but I blanked out for 10 secs
Astilla: chip, splinter (real funny in the book)
Apurar: to finish
Echar: throw – need reminding (EDIT I no longer need reminding)
Empañar – mist up, fog up, here: stain, sully
Boda wedding (I believe I learned this one)
Azotea – had this in Torpedo – he hid somewhere outside in a twelve-story apartment building – a type of terrace
Posadero - innkeeper
Lata – can – need reminding even though it's "latta" in In Italian
Haba f (broad) bean
Brotar sprout
Aposento(s) room, chambers
Forastero – need reminding what it means (through context)
Verter v. pour; vertido
Criada f. maid
Tapa f. lid, top

Otilia imagina
by Antonio Vicente

Quiero ser lombriz. Las lombrices….
Fijarse to notice
Otilia se fijó en el pez
Harta fed up estar harto de – be fed up with
Tragar swallow
Mercromina ™ a type of antiseptic
Arañar to scratch, become scratched
La cara arañada
Enchufar plug in
Jarabe m. syrup
Garganta f. throat ~ inflamada
Coronilla crown (of the head)
Esparadrapo band-aid
Piojo louse

I blame Nikolić and Teango for this vocabulary romp. To avoid any doubts, while I skipped this exercise in a couple of languages, I am not new to it. For the most part, I usually lose all my notes and I don't remember ever revising them, except for Latin. My Vocabulearn experiments did not produce good results.

Aquí Viene El Que Se Poncha/Here Comes the Strikeout
by Leonard Kessler"
(a story about language learning)

Que mala racha. What a bad streak.
Deslizarse
Sujetas el bate así
Mantienes los pies así
Y mueves el bate así, ¿ves?
Una y Otra Vez (Again and Again)
Sencillo hit
Buen batazo

Animé: learned puente (computer jumper) and huella from two different cartoons. "Huella"was hard to miss with all the characters standing around a giant footprint. I learned a lot more, actually. I "heard"a lot of the slang I picked up in Torpedo. I scanned a lot of book and DVD titles - El clan del oso cavernario was easy. I learned "cueva" from cartoons. It's very hard to miss the big gaping hole as is the very word for "hole", which is "agujero." "Entregas a domicilio" was easy thanks to Kiki's Delivery Service. I heard the word several times since. "Garras" or "claws" were easy to figure out, as this is a common word in animated shows, and in another cartoon I learned that neumáticos agarran... I forget the word for the racetrack tarmac. I heard agarrar many times. I just doublechecked the spelling for neumáticos as I was tempted to write pneu...
