This one jumped out to me as the origin of 'prototype'.

Interestingly the adjective πρωτότυπος exists as well, which seems to be the originator. Its definitions in modern Greek include:

(1) που λέγεται ή γράφεται για πρώτη φορά κι εκφράζει κάτι νέο και διαφορετικό
said or written for the first time, expressing something new and different

(2) που δημιουργήθηκε πρώτος και συνιστά τη βάση για όλα τα υπόλοιπα που ακολουθούν
being created first, establishing a basis for others to follow

(3) που δεν επαναλαμβάνει προηγούμενα πρότυπα, αλλά τα λόγια ή οι πράξεις του χαρακτηρίσζονται από νεωτερισμό
not copying earlier models (= πρότυπα!); whose words or actions are characterized by novelty

I bought one month of subscription to Καθημερινή to try it out. The above vocabulary is all taken from the first four and a half-ish paragraphs of an article about lost airport luggage and social media scams related to it:

https://www.kathimerini.gr/k/k-magazine ... erodromia/

Not a terribly complicated subject but still quite slow going for me! I'm happy to put away the textbooks for a while, though.

My favorite word from today is definitely ευκολόπιστος (= gullible, credulous), pairing εύκολος (= easy) + πιστός (= believing, faithful). So a gullible person is just an "easy-believer."

When I lived in England, the word for gamblers was "punters" in English slang. Probably too much of a similarity not to be cognate.

Looks like it is: the Greek word comes from Italian puntare (= to gamble), while English "punter" comes from either Spanish punto or French pointe:

I finished the article about lost luggage (first eight words above), which took less time than I thought it would, and moved on to one about the World Happiness Report:

https://www.kathimerini.gr/world/562940 ... neis-toys/

Favorite word today is ευημερία (= ευ [good] + ημέρα [day] = good-day-ness = prosperity, wellbeing).

Still reading the World Happiness Report article. The bit I got through today was tough: the fifteen words above come from about three paragraphs. Some of them weren't even in either the English Wiktionary or Wordreference.

Should have gotten επίλεκτος (= hand-picked) from the verb επιλέγω (= to choose, select), which I definitely know, but it wasn't obvious to me at first so I'm adding it.

Finished the World Happiness Report article. Now I'm moving on to one about water shortages:

Week 8, Day 7 of the 10-Week 1000 Word Challenge:

το ύδωρ (ύδατα): water
τα απόβλητα: waste, sewage
ο υδροφόρος ορίζοντας: phreatic zone (saturated part of aquifer) [lit. "water-bearing horizon"]
παράγω (παρήγαγα): to produce
η τροφή: food, nourishment
η γεωργία: farming, agriculture
αντλώ (άντλησα): to pump (liquid); to draw (conclusion), find
το έδαφος: ground
προκειμένου: in order to
η σίτιση: feeding (supplying of food)

I would definitely have known ύδωρ (= water, for which the far more common word in modern Greek is νερό) in the nominative singular but I didn't know its declensions, so υδάτων (genitive plural) looked alien to me. I included it to remind me of the weird plural.

Week 9, Day 1 of the 10-Week 1000 Word Challenge:

καθότι: because (= επειδή)
στάσιμος -η -ο: static, unchanged; stale, stagnant
ο σωλήνας: pipe (which gave English solenoid)
η ύδρευση: water supply
πλήττω (έπληξα): to strike, hit; to be bored
Ειρηνικός -ή -ό: Pacific (ocean, region)
η καταιγίδα: storm
η επεξεργασία: processing, working-out
εκμεταλλεύομαι (εκμεταλλεύτηκα): to exploit, take advantage of (person, resource, opportunity)
η εξέλιξη: development, evolution (biological, metaphorical)
το φύλλο: leaf
η εφεύρεση: invention
ο θάμνος: bush
η ομίχλη: fog
τυλίγω (τύλιξα): to wrap (sth in sth); to wind, coil

I knew I recognized ομίχλη (= fog, mist) from somewhere but was unsure of the meaning. Then I remembered I had searched a while back for lists of classic Greek movies and one of them was Τοπίο στην ομίχλη (= Landscape in the Mist).
