Re: A stroll through modern Greek

Forgot to log my time again yesterday! Spent about two hours on Greek, did lesson 73.

This morning I did lesson 74, Η Ευαγγελία έλαβε ένα μήνυμα (= Evangelia received a message). It covers modern means of communication: cell phones and text messages and stuff. A pretty tough one as far as new vocabulary goes.

It seems the book has pretty much run the gamut of the verbal system now: we've done active/passive, aorist/continuous, subjunctive, conditional, past, present, future. I'm definitely the least comfortable with the aorist and imperfect forms in the passive voice: they take me the longest to remember the precise meaning of what I'm looking at, let alone producing them spontaneously. Which makes sense, because Greek is the first language I've learned where those kind of verbs aren't expressed periphrastically.

Total time spent on Greek: 116 ώρες, 30 λεφτά (σε 92 μέρες) [116 hours, 30 minutes, in 92 days]

Lesson 75 today, Μια ταινία καταστροφής (= A disaster film). This one was centered around talking about movies and the movie theater. Wasn't too tough. Some words that stuck out:

αναδρομικός -ή -ό: retrospective
η επιστημονική φαντασία: science fiction
η οθόνη: screen (very important word in our present world...)

Lesson 76 today, Τετ α τετ « Στου Θωμά » (= Tête-à-tête "Chez Thomas"). Not much to write but this was definitely a tough one.

Also reviewed lessons 71, 66, 61. Added 30 words from lesson 61 to Anki. The deck has 770 cards in it now.

Lesson 77 today, an επανάληψη (review). This one was short and quite straightforward, covering the formation of the imperative. Reviewed lessons 72, 67, and 62.

Added 25 cards to Anki from lesson 62 (799 cards total now).

Forgot to check in yesterday but I did Assimil lesson 78 and studied for about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Today was lesson 79, Εν οίνω αλήθεια (= In vino veritas). Reviewed lessons 74, 69, and 64. Another 1 hour and 30 minutes of study.

I think αλήθεια is the prettiest word for "truth" in any language I've learned so far.

Added 41 cards to Anki over the last two days (840 cards total).

Time spent on Greek: 124 hours (in 97 days)

Getting close to 100 days straight and loving it.

Did Assimil lesson 80 today, Στο ιατρείο (= At the doctor's office). A lesson discussing the human body and some of its ailments. I think every Assimil course has one of these, heh. Not too difficult.

Also reviewed lessons 75, 70, and 65. Added 29 cards to my Anki deck from lesson 65, bringing the Greek deck to 869 cards total. Studied about 90 minutes today, so we have:

Total Greek study time: 125 hours (in 98 days)

Some days it's tough to find enough time for a new lesson + reviews + adding cards, but I'm still managing. Just 19 lessons left! (Yeah, the Greek course stops at 99 lessons rather than 100 for some reason.)

For when I start moving beyond Assimil in a few weeks I have four small readers all billed as "upper beginner to intermediate" level.

Seeing a Turkish loan into Greek from time to time is reviving my interest in learning Turkish, a language I've thought about off and on for a few years. A new project to take on when my Greek is more advanced? We'll see...

Did Assimil lesson 81 yesterday. Spent about 90 minutes on Greek.

Today is lesson 82, Γεγονότα σήμερα στην Αθήνα (= Today's events in Athens). A nice selection of political and current events vocabulary, should definitely help make reading the news a bit more understandable when I decide to start trying that more regularly.

I find that η αύξηση (= increase, rise, e.g. in prices) is kind of tricky to say (/'af.ksi.si/).

I've studied about an hour today so far, which brings me to:

Total Greek study time: 127 hours, 30 minutes (in 100 days)

Woohoo, 100 days uninterrupted! I love a good round number landmark.

This morning was lesson 83, Μείωση ή εξαφάνιση της γραφής; (Decrease or disappearance of writing?). Wow this one has a lot to digest. I'm pretty sure it's the longest yet. Vocabulary focus was on modern communication technology (email, SMS, etc.) and also on words related to parties, festivities, and so on.

Interesting verb pair related to η εξαφάνιση (= disappearance):
εξαφανίζω (active voice) = to destroy
εξαφανίζομαι (passive voice) = to disappear

Also reviewed lessons 78, 73, and 68. Added 20 cards from lesson 68 to Anki, bring the card total to 928.

Total study time for Greek: 129 hours, 30 minutes (in 101 days)

I let my logging slip there for a little bit. Still haven't missed a day of Greek, though!

Assimil lesson 88 today, Πάρε το τιμόνι και βάλε μπρος! (= Take the wheel and get going!). In the five days since my last post I've added 122 cards to Anki (1050 total). Reviewed lessons 83, 78, and 73 as well.

Total time spent on Greek: 139 hours, 30 minutes
