Week 9, Day 2 of the 10-Week 1000 Word Challenge:

εξαιτίας (+ γενική): because of
η πρόσμειξη: mixing
στήνω (έστησα): to set up, stage
το πλέγμα: network, mesh, braid
το δοχείο: container
επιβαρυμένος -η -ο: weighed down, (fig.) heavily affected, impaired
Μη Κερδοσκοπικός Οργανισμός: NGO, non-profit
η αφαλάτωση [αφαλατώνω]: desalination
η καλλιέργεια: cultivation, crop
το χωράφι: field
η απόσταξη: distillation
πολλαπλός -ή -ό: multiple
ο βρασμός [βράζω (έβρασα)]: boiling
παρακείμενος -η -ο (μέρος, αντικείμενο): adjacent
βλάπτω (έβλαψα): to damage, hurt

Despite the obvious resemblance, ξενοδοχείο (= hotel) does not derive directly from δοχείο (= container), so a hotel isn't a δοχείο για ξένους (= "container for foreigners"), hehe. They both ultimately come from the verb δέχομαι (= to receive, accept). I suppose the more precise etymological analogue for δοχείο in English would be "receptacle."

I thought for sure that ουρλιάζω (= to yell) must be a borrowing from French hurler but nope, it's not. Maybe there's some deep Indoeuropean connection between the two?

I have a suspicion that I will get confused at times between σφαλιάρα (= slap, smack) and the very similar-looking but unrelated ασφαλεία (= security, insurance).

I read a short article on microsleeps to get the above vocabulary:

αυτός καθαυτός / αυτή καθαυτή / αυτό καθαυτό: as such; per se
το θραύσμα: fragment, chip
βίαια: violently, suddenly
αναπάντεχος -η -ο: unexpected, sudden
εμπλέκω (έμπλεξα): to involve, implicate
οπίσθιος -α -ο: rear, posterior

Total cards: 945
Anki miss rate for today: 2.41% (2 / 83)

Despite the resemblance in meaning and form it seems εμπλέκω and implicate are unrelated etymologically.

The words are from an article about how traumatic memories work:

Still reading the traumatic memories article (link). I feel like I need to read something less science-y for my next article to avoid mouthfuls like οπίσθιος φλοιός του προσαγωγίου. Maybe something light and tourism-oriented.

Welp, shortly after getting my 1000 words in I got slammed with work and had some heavy personal stuff going on as well, so I've not been doing much with Greek the past week or so, apart from my Anki reviews. I found a promising article about digital life and memory in Kathimerini, so I'm working to get back on track reading that:
