Sam Othin's Japanese Log 2023

Postby samothin » Fri Jan 27, 2023 3:55 am

This is to record strategy and result for 6wc in February 2023. I signed up using @AmirAbRahmanJP

Currently I've completed DLI headstart for Japanese. The current daily learning plan is as follows:

Mandatory / Active
1. Anki (select core 2k/6k, own grammar cards, select lonely planet's phrasebook phrases, DLI Headstart's vocabulary & dialogues, kana)
2. YouTube Comprehensible Input (complete beginner) 1 video daily.
3. Read yesterday's YouTube Comprehensible Input (complete beginner) subtitle in Yomiwa (with furigana)
4. Create grammar cards

Fun / Passive
1. Watch terrace house (double watch) with JP sub and eng sub
2. Passive listening of other materials from YouTube

I took sample test questions for JLPT N5 here https://www.jlpt.jp/e/samples/forlearners.html

I got 50% or 7 out of 14 right. So the goal right now after 6wc would be N5 sample and maybe N4 before trip start.[img]

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPdN ... KVwssHQxYP

This is my main input source / learning material currently. The way I use it is by watching it once with no JP sub. I tried to vocalise new words that I recognize for the video. Then, I will L+R the transcript once. After I've finished L+R, I read the transcript on my own (with furigana). I will then search for new vocabulary from the transcript, get the cards from my suspended core 2k/6k and move to my active review deck. With this, I only review cards that I've learned. No pre-loading.

I also downloaded the audio in advance and will passively listen to it in my dead time.

I aim to finish up until beginner at least. Intermediate if I'm progressing well.

Sounds like a good strategy. Good luck. I'm always so sad I had to choose between Korean and Japanese, at least for a while.

This series is also one of my feed for passive listening. It's chaotic and funny.

Finally finished with the Complete Beginner playlist. Will start Beginner playlist tomorrow. I'm also at halfway point of Routledge Basic Japanese book.

For passive listening, I'm currently using the following as feeds:
1. Comprehensible Japanese
2. Konbini Confessions
3. Japanese with Ken
4. Dogen
5. This food vlogger https://youtube.com/@fallindebu

Next plan is to read Shokugeki no Soma and / or play Stardew Valley once I hit 1k words.

I'm currently looking for Japanese food vlogger that has Japanese CC (not auto generated).

Finished with the 6wc. Activities that are valuable:

1. Anki daily reps
2. Passive listening of actively watched YouTube videos
3. Creating grammar cards from Routledge textbook

Activities that are not as valuable but necessary to feed the valuable activities:
1. Watching YouTube videos with subtitle or easy comprehension
2. Intensive reading of subtitle to search for words to anki

Rent free activities that I could further do:
1. Tadoku reading

Activities that are out of reach:
1. Gaming stardew valley in JP
2. Reading shokugeki no soma in JP
