Thanks Xenops! I have now put both on my list. I note that Monster is available on Netflix Canada, but apparently the anime version of Fullmetal Alchemist was removed within the last couple of years from Netflix Canada. What remains are non-animated real actor movies: Fullmetal Alchemist; Fullmetal Alchemist: Revenge of Scar; and Fullmetal Alchemist: the Final Alchemist.

Yeah...Don't watch those. On the US version Netflix seems to have DeathNote, which is highly recommended, and the first season of Attack on Titan, but not the following seasons. I'm not sure why. If you're new(ish) to anime, your milage will vary with Cowboy Bepop and Neon Genesis Evangelion--both are considered anime classics.

Here is my list of anime/manga on MyAnimeList: https://myanimelist.net/profile/hestia-edwards?q=hestia&cat=user I will say that on that site, an anime's popularity will bloat the ratings: there isn't a Rotten Tomatoes for anime in English.

Also to note, I will not endorse, but just throw it out there: there is so much more anime than what paid streaming services can provide. So much more. A google search will give you a clue. ;)

Wow, many thanks Xenops! Between visiting the linked MyAnimeList site (which I had never heard of) and seeing all the anime mysteriously popping up in my Netflix and Youtube recommendation lists, it feels like a veil has dropped revealing a secret shadow world I previously did not know existed.

I get the sense that I may already have access through normal routes to as much anime as I can likely squeeze in (around actually studying Japanese), but I could see myself jonesing for some of the good stuff that might not easily be available down the road if I get addicted.

Thanks again.

As long as we're doing anime recs, I'd recommend Komi Can't Communicate, The Promised Neverland (s1 only), and Romantic Killer. All of them are (or were) on US Netflix - I don't know whether they're also available in Canada, but I would assume so.

Thanks golyplot - Netflix Canada is batting two for three: Komi Can't Communicate (24 episodes - I gather that means both season 1 and 2) and Romantic Killer, but no The Promised Neverland.

I am returning to something I had started last year on the basis of a mention in your log: Kotaro Lives Alone - the odd little kid who is always carrying a sword. Only saw the first couple of episodes but it looked really interesting. And I assume some wicked sword fighting will show up at some point: no point in carrying a sword if you don't eventually go berserk with some wild stabbing or something similar.

Not sure if this was mentioned, but if you use a VPN and stream through Japan, Netflix allows you to watch Netflix Japan. I was able to watch the original Terrance House series, unavailable elsewhere due to music rights, by doing this.

I was wondering where the original series was!

I really shouldn't be recommend it, because I cannot understand much (and it isn't anime), but Midnight Diner has been interesting to watch in Japanese, with Japanese subtitles, while not understanding much of anything. Highly recommend 10/10.

I am not very up-to-date on Anime, so my recommendations are old. Dennou Coil, Kill La Kill, and Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann were my favourite three. Although, my own myanimelist only has 22 completed, 20 dropped series!

Thanks CDR, Midnight Diner is high in my list at present - I watched the first episode last year (English subtitles) - the one with the fried octopus wieners - and have been keen on returning!

Week 6 – summary

Averaging just over two hours per day since January 1st on core study materials; Wanikani is taking up a big chunk of that time.

Spent much time this past week poking around at the fascinating world of anime. And also in apologizing to Bob’s Burgers, The Simpsons, Family Guy, Disney Studios, Pixar, Scooby Doo (just the original ones, plus the Zombie Island movie) and (I am not proud of admitting this) even Rocket Robin Hood, if I gave the impression in last week's post that I am not much of an animation person; what I meant was Japanese anime.

Watched Spirited Away, a Ghibli Studios production by Hayao Miyazaki which I have learned attracted a huge amount of critical approval, including being awarded a little fellow called Oscar.

I did not pick up on hardly any of the Japanese audio, but as far as I could make out, Spirited Away is richly-animated important morality lesson or cautionary tale: don’t make a huge pig of yourself when faced with an opportunity of eating someone else’s food without permission. But as usual, I might have missed the thread a bit…

Week 7 summary

Everything’s going to be fine, fine, fine… ’cause I’ve got one hand in my pocket.” Alanis Morrissette

Read an article about the deep shame and upset that a senior Japanese official, Seiji Kihara, caused his mother and his entire nation by putting his hands in his pockets during a statement by the Japanese prime minister:

https://globalnews.ca/news/9429518/seiji-kihara-japan-hands-in-pocket-mother-ashamed-us-trip/

I felt deep shame in myself for not having studied much last week, but at least I did not jam my hands in my pockets and embarrass my entire country. I only embarrassed myself.

Watching Monster, which I am enjoying. No, the monster is not the pocket-stuffing Seiji Kihara.

*If anyone may be interested in the “one hand in my pocket” reference, it is from this song by Alanis Morrissette, who is – ironically – Canadian (see what I did there?)

Week 8 comment

Not enough done this past week even to warrant reporting that not much done. I currently have close to 800 outstanding Wanikani reviews and an oppressive sense of dread.

I courageously signed up for my first 6WC, and while I do not know exactly how much prize money the winner will receive, I am assuming it is a pretty juicy amount and accordingly I am remotivated, at least for the next six weeks.
