Cito's Disloyal Daily (French, Russian, + now Cantonese!)

Postby cito » Tue Nov 01, 2022 5:24 pm

Hey y'all. I posted earlier that I would do the 6WC for Russian, but be focusing on reading French, and just using the 6WC as a motivator/way of counting time. I figure that what would be easier than that would be logging daily (for the first time ever!) for around 6 weeks, trying to do at least 30 minutes (but ideally an hour) of French reading a day, along with at least 1 episode of the French Hunter X Hunter dub (which is becoming my new favorite show; edit: originally said 2 episodes, changed challenge on first day to 1 so I know I will have time to do it!). I am 60 episodes in, out of around 140, so I might be able to finish it during the time of the challenge.

I feel like joining the 6WC would have been a little misleading, since I do want to study a bit of Russian this month and get back on it (and I will log it when I do), but my main focus is still French. I figure each day I'll give a short summary of my day, then list what I read, for how long, and what I watched. Anything I listen to will not be included in the count for the day, but I might mention it in the summary of the day.

Let it be known this is sort of based on the way Radioclaire writes her log, as I find it useful for organizational purposes, but I'll be specific in my counting how much time I spent reading/watching.

My motivation for this is the fact I'm at 10 books out of 15 for my year long reading goal, and I really wanna catch up and finish the challenge, hopefully getting 16 books, since one of the ones I counted I listened to instead of physically reading. I also want to make Hunter X Hunter a way of improving my French listening, since the dub I found has no subtitles, and for the most part, I have watched the show in English dub.

I'll conclude the challenge by posting back onto my main log with an overall time count for reading and listening as a whole, and maybe a page / episode count. I think I'll conclude at the end of November, but may extend it to half way through December (though let it be known that is the end of my semester and might get a little hectic!), if I'm not satisfied with the challenge.

Later today I'll post with the format I'll be using and what I do today.

Good luck to everyone doing the 6WC!

Started reading Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard in one of my English classes. It's great! Highly suggest so far. Based partially off of Thoreau and his experiences at Walden Pond. Also finally got back to reading a little bit of Stendhal's Le Rouge et le noir for vocabulary. It's so funny!

Went to a Francophone film festival and saw the movie Champagne! which was alright (had English subs, but given the fact I was listening to and speaking French all day, I'll just include it). I also walked around Montréal, ate at some restaurants, and went to the bookstore! Ended up buying some French classics (I'll post about which ones in my main log) and the first Hunter X Hunter manga (in French, of course!) because my roommate said I should just read the first one before the season I'm on is over. I read the first half of it today and watched some also on the car ride back.

Time
40 minutes reading (HXH)
160 minutes watching (2 episodes HXH and Champagne!)

Played a lot of Mount and Blade: Bannerlord today while "listening" to a Culture 2000 podcast (highly recommend to French learners/speakers). Also read more Annie Dillard, Stendhal (+ anki) and finished What I Talk About When I Talk About Running by Haruki Murakami! Thank gosh! I never really got around to finishing it all this time and I'm kinda glad to be done. Not a ton of plot but I'll talk more about it in my main log tomorrow. Think I'll finish the manga tomorrow, but I wont add that to my book count for this year (it's just really fun!).

Time:

French
70 minutes reading (Stendhal + Murakami)
20 minutes watching (1 episode of HXH)
6 x
50 French Books: 20 / 50
Greek ASSIMIL: 35 / 100
Russian ASSIMIL: 43 / 100

Finished the Hunter X Hunter manga! It was awesome. I don't really like this part of the show I'm in (Greed Island, for those who might watch it also), but it's still enjoyable. I also ordered Teach Yourself Old English today to prep for the Old English class I'm taking next semester (can't wait!).

Made 12 Anki cards from Stendhal. It's kinda hard to read but I think I'm starting to get it. Just lots of names and its a bit old and in French .

Finally got back to Russian by studying some of Lesson 22 of Assimil. I think it will take me 4 days or so.

Time
French
60 minutes reading (Stendhal and HXH Manga)
20 minutes watching (1 episode HXH)

Reaaaally busy day today. Class registration tomorrow! Hope I get my courses. Didn't have much time for reading today so just reviewed some chapters of Stendhal. Hopefully I'll start Caligula Suivi du Malentendu by Camus by the end of the week.

Have a French presentation I still have to prepare for, so I'll be reading some political tracts to report on tomorrow!
