I really enjoyed Le liseur du 6h27, and I'm usually pretty fussy. But giving book recommendations to others is a dangerous thing!

rdearman wrote:It is all a matter of taste. I much prefer action novels or science fiction, so literary works modern or classic leaves me cold. I have only read one scifi book in French (I reviewed it ages ago) which was about a couple found frozen in the Antarctic in a building built before humans were thought to exist. Bit of a sexist book, but it was written in the early 60's. It was ok, but not great. The French seem to be much better at comic books. I loved Valerian and Laureline for example.

I do have a couple of modern SciFi books on my Kindle from French authors that emk recommend, but I want to get these paperbacks completed before I crack them open.
Have you seen the new Dune film?

I watched an interview with the director the other day, and now I want to see the film. :-)

Rick
Once again I find myself wondering if there has ever been an interesting novel written by a French author, because I have yet to find one. So far every book from my shelf which I have read in French and enjoyed has been a translation from English or Spanish.
Yes, if you wouldn't mind setting up this sentence as the topic for discussion, it could be very interesting.

The thing is your honesty and integrity in your reviews encourages others to be likewise. A discussion could be a useful spring board.

enjoy

A small update. Only 140 pages to go of Yeah Olde French Classic.

I have found a Korean tutor who is willing to work with me on weekends (via Skype) to try and get me to a tourist level by April next year. I need to really commit more though, I'm being lazy and just watching dramas without putting in the real effort. I have Pimsleur, but I keep forgetting to use it. Need to make this a habit somehow. I already get up really early, but I use that time before work to read in French, so something has to give. Anyway, that is the Korean update.
====
I have been planned on writing a book called "Language Learner's FAQ" for the last two years, using the frequently asked questions here on the forum. (It helps to have access to the back-end database for this sort of thing.) :)

But in the end, it sounded like a lot of work. In fact it not only sounds like it, it bloody well is a lot of work. So I decided to do a series of videos instead, and later I might do a book. Using the DB it came out to about 125 questions on about 30 topics. That is the FAQ, let alone all the other questions!

I will start publishing this series on Tuesday, and I'll put a link to the first video in my log. I have done two of them so far and plan to release them weekly, right now I'm working on the third one, and I have to say it is a banger of a topic! There are tons of threads related to this topic and lots of different methods and resources to cover. I could probably write a book on that topic alone!

I'm basically going back through the DB, reading all the threads and advice given, and trying to paraphrase it all into some coherent and concise recommendations. I don't think I really cracked the format and content until this third video, but hopefully the others will be of interest to people. For the long-term members here, a lot of this will be "old rope", but perhaps you might find it useful to pass on to newbies. It might even be that you'll find something you didn't see. I don't tag the threads since I'm paraphrasing 5-10 threads into one video, but it will be useful!

If you ever have time, I would love to learn the titles of your favorite Korean Romantic Comedies. My wife and I are hooked.

Boys Over Flowers is a rom-com classic as well.
