After my little rant about the Harry Potter book I decided that I just needed to relax and not let the frustration get the better of me. I decided that I wanted to finish the book. The next day, after a few deep breaths and no expectations, I started reading again. Suddenly everything is much better. I'm comprehending much better than I thought I was. You'd think that at some point I would learn to quit letting my emotions get the better of me, but let's be realistic, I'm too old to change now.

Dw i'n darllen y llyfr Harri Potter a Maen yr Athronydd. Mae'n anodd ond dw i'n hoffi'r stori. Nid yw'r llyfrau eraill yn Gymraeg. Efallai byddaf yn darllen y llyfrau eraill yn Sbaeneg.

(Google Translate really dislikes this sentence, but then again Google Translate doesn't really like Welsh at all. I'm trying to say "It will be in the present tense even though the past tense isn't very hard." I think it's correct enough to be understandable, though.) Dw i ddim yn ysgrifennwr da.

I guess I'm overdue for an update. Work has been really stressful lately and I haven't been studying quite as much as usual. Hopefully everything will calm down before too long!

Español

De repente realmente odio mi trabajo. Muchos cambios. Me da mucho estrés.

Cymraeg

Dw i wedi mynd i ysgrifennu stori. Dw i wedi eisiau ymarfer ysgrifennu a dysgu geiriau. Mae'n od. Dw i'n gallu ysgrifennu a siarad ychydig. Dw i ddim yn darllen da iawn a dw ddim yn deall yr iaith lafar. Dw i credu bod dw i'n gallu ysgrifennu a siarad rŵan well na pan ro'n i'n astudio Sbaeneg ar ôl saith mis. Mae'n bosib bod dw i'n gallu ysgriffenu a siarad Cymraeg well na Sbaeneg rŵan!

Yn olaf wnes i orffen Harri Potter a Maen yr Athronydd ar ôl pump mis. Roedd yn anodd. Ro'n i'n mwynhau'r llyfr. Ro'n i'n prynu Charlie a'r Ffatri Siocled gan Roald Dahl.

It occurs to me that nobody else on the forum appears to be studying Welsh, and I doubt that anyone is taking the time to plug my Welsh writings into Google Translate. So as a public service, here's what I was trying to write in English.

I was going to write a story. I wanted to practice writing and learn words. It's odd. I can write and speak a little bit. I don't read well and I can't understand the spoken language. I think I can write and speak now better than when I was studying Spanish after seven months. It's possible that I can write and speak Welsh better than Spanish now!

I finally finished Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone after five months. It was difficult. I enjoyed the book. I bought Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.

Definitely not eloquent, but I think (hope) that it would be understandable. I'm positive that I missed a few, if not all, of the mutations. I really need to start working seriously on listening comprehension. I have listened to a little bit of BBC Radio Cymru. It's mostly incomprehensible, even though I can occasionally get the gist of the conversations.

Mae Charlie a'r Ffatri Siocled yn rhesymol hawdd hyd yn hyn. Nid oes gen i chwilio am lot o geiriau! Dw i'n cyffrous!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is fairly easy so far. I don't have to look up a lot of words! I'm excited!

Well done!

Your first note about Welsh (in this thread, at least) was in January 2016. Did you have any experience with the language before that?

Diolch! Thanks!

I had no experience with the Welsh language before I started studying the language last year. Only fond memories of visiting Wales when I was a kid. Before I found this forum I had never even considered learning a language other than Spanish. I'm not even sure when I realized that Welsh was living language or even a language at all. Maybe from reading Montmorency's log (We miss you! Come back!) or when the Duolingo Welsh course was announced.

With all the struggles that I feel like I'm having with Welsh, having experience learning another language to a decent level has definitely been a great help. The fact that Welsh grammar seems terribly simple hasn't hurt either.

I guess I should do a quick update since I'm here clicking hearts. I really need to do a better job of that. I find the hearts very encouraging and I want to encourage others.

Español

I generally don't watch a lot of TV. I prefer to waste my time in other ways. I have watched a few series' for "learning purposes". They were all ok, but it kind of felt like a chore to watch them. Reto 4 elementos is awesome! I actually look forward to watching an episode every evening and I'm pretty sure I could binge watch it, which is rare. The only show I ever binge watched was Star Trek: Voyager on Netflix. The episodes of Reto are on YouTube and they last around an hour and forty five minutes without commercials (which is too bad because I like commercials). My listening comprehension has been decent for a while but with the almost daily viewing this show has come to the point of "I forget that it's Spanish". Exciting stuff!

I finished the book Los narcos gringos, which is about how drugs move from Mexico to the U.S. and how they're distributed in the U.S. by the cartels. It was interesting, but a little too political for me. Right now I'm reading Medianoche en México. It's a true story about, and written by, Alfredo Corchado who wrote an article for a newspaper that angered one of the cartels so they ordered him to be assassinated. I'm not too far into yet but it's very interesting so far. I actually recognize Alfredo Corchado even though I don't know from where.

Cymraeg

I'm still plugging along with Welsh and making progress. I'm getting close to finishing Charlie a'r Ffatri Siocled. News stories are slowly getting more comprehensible. I'm sporadically putting time into working on listening comprehension. With my level of reading comprehension I can, surprisingly, follow along with subtitles. I can usually get a very broad gist of the subject that I'm listening to, without subtitles, but not much else. It's still kind of exciting, though. My output level is still around the level of a sleepy three year old.

I still have a burning desire to be at a decent level but for some reason the urgency isn't there like it was with Spanish. I suppose it's because I already have another language at a decent level. I'm actually ok with this, I'm making progress and it's good progress. It just may take a little longer to reach my goal.

I saw Reto 4 elementos the other day on Univision Now and almost started watching it. Now you mention it the very next day, I take that as a sign that I should check it out.

I had to read Los Narcos Gringos in college and I liked it, other than all the political stuff like you mentioned. I even had to write a paper on the book in Spanish, I wonder if I still have it somewhere? I remember writing about how the cartels would use innocent people to as mules for transporting their drugs.

And Medianoche en México? I bought that book and started reading it a few years back but gave up on it because it was too difficult at the time. I'm probably at a level where I could read it and enjoy it now. I hope you enjoy the book, and if you do, maybe I'll give it a second shot.

As always, it's cool checking out your log. It makes it even more interesting when we've read some of the same books or came across the same TV shows. I suppose that for Spanish learner's "El mundo es un pañuelo". < I learned that expression years ago and I think this is the first time I've used it

*Edit* oops, I almost forgot to mention that I know exactly how you feel in regards to forgetting of you watched something in Spanish or English. What a great feeling that is!

Good luck Hank!
