I've read more in my book, and I'm now at 53% read.

I've read about the 1600s, the "goudene eeuw", an exciting time in Dutch history. I'm also impressed by how modern the Netherlands seemed to be at the time: They were a republic with representatives from each region, in contrast to most other European countries who had a king. Not a democracy though. Also, it was relatively free and open for new thoughts and opinions, it was religious tolerant and the state was placed above the church. So attracting a large number of artists and intellectuals.

Imagine how exciting Amsterdam must have been in the 1600s: One of the largest cities in Europe, center of world trade, with ships coming in from all over the world. Timber from Norway, grain from the Baltics, salt from France, spices from Indonesia, sugar and chocolate from the Americas, and the occasional gold robbed from a spanish vessel.

I have listened to some podcasts:
- Onbehaarde Apen: on the norse god Thor
- Zeg het in het Nederlands - on the Dutch Antilles (only the first part).

The first one is ordinary radio for native speakers, while the other is for learners. Large parts of it I understood easily, I almost forgot that I was listening to Dutch and could focus on the content. So I have definitely improved. The funny thing is that I didn't find the learner podcast easier than the 'proper' podcast. They merely speak a bit slower. But radio hosts usually speak clearly, anyway.

Haven't updated this log in 3 months... I haven't done much with Dutch either, only a bit. I've listened to a couple of podcasts.
My plan now is to finish the book before christmas. I'm currently at 72%.

I've read a bit in "Geschiedenis van Nederland". Not finished yet, but I'll finish it this week. It's now mostly a summary of Dutch politics after the war which is a bit boring.

I became inspired to start Dickens "a Christmas Carol" (in English), as I hadn't read it before (only the Donald version).

Year-end summary: (32nd of december ;) )

- I've finished "Geschiedenis van Nederland"
- I read a couple of short H.C.Andersen stories
- I've listened to podcasts, both for learners and from Dutch radio
- I've texted and spoken Dutch in real life
- New words learned: I have 745 new words and phrases in Anki.

I haven't used Anki religiously, mainly I used it to store words that I found and reviewed them the day after. Maybe I should go through the whole deck.

Since my goal was only to improve, I think I've reached it. Better listening comprehension, better reading speed and larger vocabulary. I'm able to stutter Dutch sentences and mostly understand Dutch radio. I'd need more speaking practice to be able to speak fluently.
