Most of the time this meaning is used about complete paintings (especially large ones) whereas a blank canvas is холст :)

Wow I wrote this before seeing your recent post. TBH I didn't realize холщовый comes from холст
Radioclare wrote:наклейка - sticker/label (one of those words which I felt I should have guessed once I looked it up)
When exchanging Panini stickers I found out enthusiasts prefer to call them стикер :D The word is also used for various kinds of stickers (interchangeably with наклейка) and even post-it notes.
In the Facebook interface stickers are наклейки but I'd say that's not what ppl actually call them. In other social networks/apps they're стикеры.
a label is also этикетка (or бирка, the non-sticky one with washing instructions etc), whiile лейбл is specifically record label
"азарт" (excitement, passion)
I'd say it always has an undertone of risk/gambling. азартные игры are what you play at a casino (or slot machines), for example. It comes from the French 'hazard'.
Любовь с первого взгляда was also a trashy TV show  No idea whether any participants found true love at the show

Have you seen the Lapland one? ;)

I'm not sure :? Is that the episode where the presenter with the small budget can't find anywhere affordable to stay? I did go through a phase of watching quite a lot of episodes - particularly episodes for places I'd been - but I think that was pre-pandemic so it feels like a lifetime away now.

Was working at a client premises today, but somewhere that's only 5 miles away so I can't really complain. Tonight I've been packing my bag and tomorrow I'm going to be attempting to get to the Isle of Man again.

Russian
When I got home from work I needed to get on the treadmill for a few more steps. I decided to listen to a short podcast from 'Что это было?'. This one was on the theme 'Как россияне оправдывают войну?" and it was from a couple of weeks ago; I chose it mainly because it was fairly short.

Later in the evening I cleared my Memrise reviews and that was that. I've packed my Ken Follett book, so hopefully I'll be able to read it on the plane tomorrow :)

I made it to the Isle of Man. But it involved getting up at 5am and finally getting to my destination around 1pm. Then the client took me and the team out for dinner, which was very kind of them but it was one of those days where I would have preferred an early night :D

Russian
Luckily I got my Russian in while I was still relatively awake! I did some work in the airport while I was waiting for my flight, but then once I got on the plane I was able to relax and read. It was only a short flight but there was a bit of a delay taking off, so I was able to get in the best part of an hour.

Also, Russian polotno is one of many words where Russian -olo- corresponds to South Slavic and Czech/Slovak -la-; in this case, it's ofc platno, but the meanings only partially overlap.

Check Easy Croatian (very useful for Bosnian, Montenegrin and Serbian as well)

The weather has been surprisingly good in the Isle of Man and it's a really beautiful place. I'd forgotten how tiring it is working away with colleagues; you have breakfast together, work, have lunch together, work, have dinner together... it's hard to get any time to yourself.

Russian
That means a very boring update from me this evening, I'm afraid. I've just about managed to fit in my 30 minutes of Russian by doing Memrise at odd intervals during the day where I had some spare time. Luckily I had lots of reviews to keep me busy :)

Any chance you'll get to hear some Manx?

You're not a C1 (or B1 or whatever) if you haven't tested.

My daughter was born on the Isle of Man. It is a beautiful island, indeed. I loved the time I spent there. Be sure to say hello to the fairies as you ride over their bridge!

No, I asked a lady at the client today and she said she only knew how to say two things in Manx: "toilet" and "go away!". But I guess those are key phrases in any language  I did see some written Manx on some of the street signs around Douglas.

It really is lovely, especially in good weather. I'd like to go back sometime and do some more touristy things rather than just working. My taxi driver pointed out the fairy bridge to me on Wednesday when I arrived. He was telling me that last week someone failed to say hello to the fairies and crashed into the far side of the bridge

A loooong day. Had a full day of work, then a flight back from the Isle of Man to Manchester. Unfortunately the flight was delayed for around an hour, so I had a bit of a stress about whether I was going to make the last train out of Manchester which would enable me to get back to my home town. But I did just make it with two minutes to spare and I'll hopefully be home by 22.30.

Russian
I did a bit of Memrise in the airport while I was waiting for the plane. The audit partner paid for the team to get into the airport lounge, which was quite exciting as I'd never been to a lounge before, so I was able to drink some free coffee and clear some reviews.

On the plane itself I ended up with a seat not next to my colleagues, which I was secretly quite pleased about (although they're really nice) because it meant I could do some Russian reading in peace. Still making good progress with the Ken Follett and actually got to the chapter of the book where they make it clear why it's called 'The Third Twin' today.

21 May
I was going to loads of language stuff today, but I failed because I got distracted by various crises with my upcoming travels. First of all I got an email from a ferry company in the Azores informing me that a ferry I'd booked between islands would now be arriving at a different port from the one I was expecting... which meant I had to cancel and re-book the hire car I'd had planned to meet me at the original port. And then I spent 40 minutes on the phone to Aer Lingus trying to sort out an issue with my flight to the US for NASK, where my connecting flight to Raleigh had been rescheduled to depart before I'd even made it to the US. Feeling a bit over travel this evening

Russian
Before all this kicked off this morning I did manage to clear my Memrise reviews. And this evening after dinner I read another couple of chapters of Ken Follet. The words I looked up today were:

томный - languishing
разврат - depravity
махровый халат - bath robe (like a towelling one)

No new travel problems today. But I have spent around half the day travel planning and the rest of it going out for a walk.

Russian
Before I went out this morning I cleared my Memrise reviews and studied a section on superlatives in TY Russian Grammar. This was fairly straightforward and it was also the final section in the second adjectives chapter. The next chapter is about adverbs so I'm hoping that's going to be an easy one :)

I also read another chapter of 'Третий близнец' and looked up the word спесь (pride, arrogance).
