Only just discovered your log - it sounds like we have very similar interests, though I am unlikely ever to tackle Ugarit... Best of luck.
księżycowy wrote:Thank you for your suggestions, Herodotean. I do have some resources that come with audio (the Routledge Biblical Hebrew textbook, Kittel, Cambridge's New Testament textbook, etc.), but I generally don't focus too much on listening or speaking skills myself. I certainly see the logic behind it, and can see how it would be helpful. I would like to eventually work on composition in many of these languages.

While I too am not much interested in speaking these languages, I found Aleph with Beth very helpful - it's just great for internalising the structures of the language very deeply.

Well, at the least I can check it out and see if I like it. Which, honestly I have been meaning to do, but have been rather lazy about getting to. Thanks for the reminder.

I only watched one episode of Aleph with Beth. It was a little slow paced for me since I know a bit of Modern Hebrew, but I loved that she used a Sephardic accent which preserves some unique sounds that are lost in Modern Hebrew. Another great resource to hear Biblical Hebrew with Sephardic pronunciation is https://mechon-mamre.org/. They have a number of monolingual and bilingual Hebrew Bible texts, and they also have audio recordings with Sephardic pronunciation for each chapter of the Hebrew Bible.

Days 13-17:
No, I didn't drop off, I just took a break from posting as much. I did slack in reporting my progress to my data base (not going to try to do that again!), and had to try to reconstruct that as best as I could (I hadn't wrote any dates associated with some of my handwritten times). Here is my best reconstruction:

Day 13:
Missed Day apparently, unless I manage to find any times that corollate to this date.

Day 14:
Hebrew [0:41:44]

Day 15:
Hebrew [0:32:04]
Greek [0:35:56]

Day 16:
Greek [0:34:35]

Day 17:
Greek [0:30:28]
Hebrew [TBA]

Total Days: 15 (-2?)
Cumulative totals:
Hebrew [5:51:16]
Greek [5:36:37]

Greek
So far I have completed Exercises 6 and 7. I have also begun to read through Chapter 8. I've taken one pass at Chapter 8, which goes over propositions and the verb ἐιμί (I am).

Hebrew
I completed exercises 4a and 4b. It took two passes at 4b and at least two rereads of the lesson, but for the most part I think I've got it. I have yet to complete Exercise 4c, which I plan to work on today. I hope to add another 30 minutes for Hebrew to my total today.

Edit: I managed to get a good [0:32:07] min session of Hebrew in today. I worked on Exercise 4c, and for the most part was able to correctly give the plurals of the words. Admittedly, I did need to look up a few words (in the singular!), but that's no foul.

Let's round up the last few days (18 & 19):

Day 18:
Greek [0:32:04]
Hebrew [0:33:01]

Day 19:
Greek [0:18:43]
Hebrew [0:19:51]
Total [0:38:34]

Greek
Thus far I have completed a number of passes reading Chapter 8 in Mounce, and have worked on a few of the sentences for Exercise 8. (Apparently I have already done a good number of the parsing and sentences for Exercise 8 already, but I plan to redo them shortly.) The chapter was on propositions and the present tense of the verb "to be" (in addition to the third person singular past tense form, as well).

Plan for today:
-Watch Lecture for Chapter 8

Hebrew
I successfully made it through Lesson IV! Actually, so far I'm not finding Seow so horrible, but that could be because of my previous contacts with Hebrew. Either way, I've started Lesson V, and have read the section on geminate (qall) nouns. I still have the section on segolate nouns to go, and it probably wouldn't hurt to make another pass at the geminate noun section again either.

Plan for today:
-(Re)read Lesson V

Days 21 & 22:

Greek
Day 21: [0:00:00]

Day 22: [0:27:02]

I have yet to watch the video lector, but I plan to do that today. Otherwise, I have worked on the sentences for translation in Exercise 8, and have completed half of them so far (1 through 10).

Plan for today:
-Watch Lecture for Chapter 8
-Exercise 8 (Finish sentences 11-20)?

Hebrew
Day 21: [0:34:01]

Day 22: [0:38:27]

I really stunk up part B of Exercise 4, which asks for the plural forms of several different forms of nouns. I was able to do part A well after one fail. I trust I'll get it after another try or two. I'll review parts of the previous few lessons on nouns as well, but those irregular plurals snuck in there always get me. :P

Plan for today:
-Exercise 5b
-Review past Lessons as needed for the exercise.

Total Days: 20 (-2)

On a side note, I might be resurrecting my general log soon to review my German. I'll leave it at that for now, as there are no assurances at this point.
