Re: Adventures among the Dead

Greek
I've started (and gotten about halfway through) Chapter 8 of Mounce.

I've reviewed and revived my understanding of Declensions I and II. I still have a bit to go to say I've mastered them, but I am happy with my progress so far. This week has been a bit slow, due to Christmas and all (Merry Christmas, by the way!). I hope to pick up some of the slack this coming week and complete a few chapters.

Hebrew
I've decided to use Seow's grammar for Hebrew. I am particularly fascinated in how he brings attention to roots very early, and has that as the backbone of most of his discussions. I hear it's a challenging book, and can be a slog to get through. Excellent. I also love how most (if not all) of the examples are from Biblical text, and he has you actually reading continuous Biblical text pretty early as well.
I also have Pratico & Van Pelt in the foyer if I need them.

I hope to have a more substantial update by 2022.

One or both of these might be a useful supplement to Seow:

Aleph with Beth

Randall Buth's Living Biblical Hebrew

I've always found that adding listening and productive skills (speaking and/or writing) has done wonders for my ancient languages. The Aleph with Beth channel in particular is extremely well done from a pedagogical standpoint (and it's free); I don't know enough Hebrew to vouch for the quality of their scripts. Buth does Koine Greek as well, as does Christophe Rico (at the Polis Institute).

Thank you for your suggestions, Herodotean. I do have some resources that come with audio (the Routledge Biblical Hebrew textbook, Kittel, Cambridge's New Testament textbook, etc.), but I generally don't focus too much on listening or speaking skills myself. I certainly see the logic behind it, and can see how it would be helpful. I would like to eventually work on composition in many of these languages.

Update time!

I've signed up for the 365 challenge again this year. Here's hoping I stick with it longer! Positive thoughts! :) I do find it motivating to get off my lazy ass and actually study. :P

"And there was evening and there was morning, the first day." (Gen. 1:5)
(Sorry, given the nature of the languages I'm currently studying and this being the second day of the challenge...)

Recap of Day 1:
Greek
I studied vocabulary on Memrise (Mounce Chapter 4) and Anki (Chapter 4 and maybe 5?). [0:20:36]
I also reviewed some on αὑτός (Mounce 7.15) and α-η alternation in 1st declension nouns (Mounce 7.14). [0:09:52]

Total Time: [0:30:32]

Plan for today:
-Vocabulary study (probably just Anki)
-Check and correct/understand answers to exercises 6 & 7

Hebrew
I studied vocabulary on Memrise (Seow Lesson II) and Anki (Seow Lesson II). [0:15:52]
I also read Lesson III on Nouns and their various forms. It was particularly interesting to learn about some of the internal changes that happen when endings are added (Seow III.2). [0:14:25]

Total Time: [0:30:17]

Plan for today:
-Vocabulary study (probably just Anki)
-Reread Lesson III
-Complete Exercise 3.a

Day 2:
I should probably note that all times are in [H:M:S] format.

Greek
-Vocabulary study (probably just Anki) ✔ [0:13:26]
-Check and correct/understand answers to exercises 6 & 7 ✔ [0:21:55]

Daily Total: [0:35:22]
Cumulative Total: [1:05:54]
Total Days: 2

I found the most trouble with translating the plural forms of words. I could correctly identify them in the parsing exercises at the beginning, but failed to translate them as such. Similar story for the sentence/phrase translation exercises. I plan to review the forms of declensions, and redo some of the exercises tomorrow more carefully.

Plan for Tomorrow:
-Review Declension 1 and 2 forms (Chapters 6 & 7)
-Redo select exercises from Exercise 6 and 7
-Vocabulary study

Hebrew
-Vocabulary study (probably just Anki) ✔ [0:17:11]
-Reread Lesson III ✔
-Complete Exercise 3.a ✔ [0:28:05] (including the reread)

Daily Total: [0:45:16]
Cumulative Total: [1:15:33]
Total Days: 2

The exercise had me writing out the plurals of various words in Hebrew. For the most part I had no issues. The only two words that really tripped me up were אֵל (for which I wrote אֱלֹהִים but Seow was looking for אֵלִים) and יָד (which I put down the dual, when Seow wanted to plural). I also messed up the vowel on he' in the plural form of כֹּהֵן (I wrote כֹּהְנִים instead of the correct כֹּהֲנִים)

Plan for tomorrow:
-Vocabulary study
-Reread Lesson III
-Finish Exercise 3.a

Greek
-Review Declension 1 and 2 forms (Chapters 6 & 7) ✔/✘ [0:39:06]
-Redo select exercises from Exercise 6 and 7 ✘
-Vocabulary study ✘

I was tired after my first day back to work after a week and a half off, so I decided to just phone it in today and just watched the video for Chapter 6.

Daily Total: [0:39:06]
Cumulative Total: [1:45:00]
Days: 3

Plan for tomorrow:
-Vocabulary
-Video for Chapter 7

Hebrew
-Vocabulary study ✔ [0:17:06]
-Reread Lesson III ✔ [0:28:57]
-Finish Exercise 3.a ✔ [See above]

I was not only able to get what I wanted done with Hebrew, but I also started on Exercise 3.b!

Daily Total: [0:46:03]
Cumulative Total: [2:01:36]
Days: 3

Plan for tomorrow:
-Vocabulary
-Exercise 3.b & c
(-Reread Lesson III?)

Re: Adventures among the Dead

Postby księżycowy » Tue Jan 04, 2022 11:30 pm

I've switched from two specific languages to the generic option for the 365. I just needed some breathing room today, as I had too many errands to do today to study both languages for 30 mins each. I will of course still shot for doing that, but I foresee other days like today that I'll have to not study one of them. (Like tomorrow probably.)

Day 4:

Greek
Rolling over to tomorrow
Plan for tomorrow:
-Vocabulary
-Video for Chapter 7

Hebrew
-Vocabulary ✔ [0:15:15]
-Exercise 3.b & c ✔ [0:15:50]
(-Reread Lesson III?)

Daily Time: [0:31:05]
Cumulative Time: [2:32:41]

I did have a little trouble with two or three of the other plurals on exercise 3a, but over all I was very pleased with my results. Most of them were mistakes with needing a compound shewa, instead of the simple shewa I had written. I also decided to not really bother much with finishing exercise 3b, and I did try 3c as well. I also started reading a little bit of Lesson IV, which I will continue tomorrow.

Plan for tomorrow:
-Vocabulary
-Read Lesson IV

Day 5:

Greek
-Vocabulary ✔ [0:15:46]
-Video for Chapter 7 ✘ [0:14:19]

I decided to work on some Greek today, so as to not lose too much (from the meager scraps I do have :P ). I have reviewed the vocabulary and for the most part it was easy, even the words I just learned. I also have the workbook as a kindle book now as well, which will help immensely with redoing the exercises (I wish Basics of Biblical Hebrew also came in kindle form, hopefully eventually it will!). Instead of watching the video, I redid some of the exercises in the workbook (Exercise 6).

Daily Total: [0:30:05]
Cumulative Total: [2:38:25]

Plan for tomorrow:
-Vocabulary
-Finish Exercise 6
-Start Exercise 7?

Day 6:

Greek
-Vocabulary ✔ [0:02:13]
-Finish Exercise 6 ✘
-Start Exercise 7? ✘

I was lazy and just did vocabulary for Greek today.

Plan for tomorrow:
-Vocabulary
-Finish Exercise 6
-Exercise 7?

Hebrew
-Vocabulary ✔ [0:16:49]
-Read Lesson IV ✔ [0:11:09]

Daily Total: [0:27:58] (Total Greek + Hebrew [0:30:11])
Cumulative Total: [3:00:40]

I have caught up with vocabulary in Lessons II and III. I'll add the vocabulary for Lesson IV tomorrow. I also started reading Lesson IV. I get the feeling it might take a good few passes to have some of it sink in (Seow goes over weak radicals and nouns with suffixes), but the part I did read today was easy enough to understand, I thought.

Plan for tomorrow:
-Vocabulary (including adding vocab for Lesson IV)

Greek
Day 7:
-Nothing

Day 8:
-Vocabulary [0:00:10] (I only had one flashcard in Anki)

Day 9:
-Vocabulary [0:04:58]
-Exercise 6 (Warm-up & Sentences 1-10) [0:21:33]

Cumulative Total: [3:07:19]

This time, I made sure I remembered to properly translate plural forms in the plural. Overall, I was happy with my progress, and the easy with which I was able to complete the exercises!

Plan for tomorrow:
-Vocabulary
-Exercise 6 (Sentences 11-20)

Hebrew
Day 7:
-Nadda

Day 8:
-Vocabulary [0:07:53]
-Reading Lesson IV (Seow) [0:25:16]

Day 9:
-Vocabulary [0:02:34]
-Exercise 4a [0:08:27]

Cumulative Total: [3:44:50]

I've read over the sections on root patterns (qatel, qotel, miqtal, etc.) and that is pretty easy. I also did the exercise for that section (Exercise a), and that was pretty easy as well. I've also began reading over the sections on weak radicals, but have only really read the sections on gutturals (section a) and nun (section b) so far.

Plan for tomorrow:
-Vocabulary
-Read Lesson IV Section 2c
-Reread Lesson IV Sections 2a & b?

And, for the purposes of the contest, here are my totals:
Day 7 [0:00:00]
Day 8 [0:33:19]
Day 9 [0:37:31]

Total Days: 8 (-1)
