rowanexer wrote:Just wanted to say I'm really interested in how you're learning Bengali. There's not a lot of resources for it, particularly at higher levels, so I'm very interested in how you create your own language materials, especially the native-to-native discourse massaging. I'm definitely guilty of sticking pretty closely to textbooks and other ready-made materials. This gives me ideas for using language exchanges a bit more fruitfully.

Sorry for the late response!
Yes, there aren't a lot of resources for Bengali/Bangla. I used the GPA method and stuck pretty closely to it with 6 month interruption/stint in a language school. You can check out the GPA method here: https://www.growingparticipation.com/overview

I read all the manuals multiple times, kept logs of my hours and used/created a lot of material to use with GPA. Some people hate it, and it's not for everyone. It's highly social, teaches no grammar at all, and discourages reading/writing until later stages. It's created by Greg Thompson a linguist highly influenced by Krashen. I also created the Bangla/Bengali resources page on this forum, so you can check that out as well. I also went through TEACH YOURSELF BENGALI a couple of times on my own.

I still do Phase 3, 4, and 5 activities regularly.

Finished রবীন্দ্রনাথ এখানে কখনও খেতে আসেননি by Mohammad Nazim Uddin today. Loads of fun. The best Bangla novel I've read so far. A creative version of Hannibal Lecter in Bangladesh. It also features a moat full of crocodiles, which is a benefit to any novel.

Daily routine now that GPA Phase 5 is over:

Read 2-3 Chapters in Greek with audio and diglot text
Record myself reading one chapter of Greek exercises from Dobson
Take one Greek quiz from Murray Vasser
Do Anki and Memrise
Translate two verses from the Greek NT
Anki
Memrise

Listen to one 5-10min Bangla vocab recording
Listen to five one minute Bangla action picture recordings from language partner
Shadow one 2 minute Bangla recording
Record one action picture recording and send to language partner
Record one five minute speaking exercise
Once per week meet with language partner.
Read as much Bangla as time allows and you enjoy.

Thanks! That looks really interesting. I've got Teach Yourself Bengali as well! I went through several chapters when I was teenager because I was enamoured with the script. It was a pretty good resource. I don't currently have any need in my life to learn Bengali but I do kind of get wistful about it. I still have a collection of Satyajit Ray DVDs.

Finished the Byzantine Greek NT (587 pages)
Halfway through a few Bangla books including The Silence of the Lambs.

I thought I had the ACTFL scheduled, but turns out they don't have an assessor available for that time. Some frustratingly unprofessional interactions. Still waiting to find out when my exam is scheduled. Trying to find a way to take the CEFR for Bangla in the meantime.

I'm a little anxious that my comprehension is so far beyond my speaking that my oral proficiency will not turn out to be as high as I hoped. But that's just anxiety. It's not the assessment that matters.
