einzelne wrote:Omg, you're planning to read Gennady Gor! He's such an underestimated writer and his biography is interesting in its own way. He started as an avant-garde writer in 1920s but then, because of repressions, he dropped literally experiments and started to write more 'conventional' prose (aka social realism) and in 1950s he transformed himself into a sci-fi writer (but you can still detect a streak of weirdness in his prose — I'm reading his Изваяние now). There's a recent resurge of interest in his writings since a lot of his earlier more experimental works has been rediscovered and published.

PS. Also, I consider myself as an avid reader but it's the first time in my life that I see the word дреко́льe. I guess you don't need it:)

Einzelne,

I'm glad :) you mentioned this writer Gennady Gor, I didn't know him. If there is any audiobook of him (with a matching tex available), I will read it for sure.

On the other hand, I'm sorry :? that my imperfect command of the russian language made you believe that I was planning to read Gennady Gor. The sci-fi I mentioned in my post, Гора Звезды, is a Briusov's book. I guess I should had used quotation marks enclosing the title: " Гора Звезды".

As for дреко́льe, you are right, but this word struck me. I don't look up every unknown word I stumble upon in a text , I skip many, but I found дреко́льe strinkingly odd, because I had never encountered such root дрекол-, as my main approach to master the russian vocabulary is etymological. So after reading the chapter where I found дреко́льe, I bothered myself to look it up and only found it in a bulky monolingual dictionary , a clear signal that this word is very rare indeed, therefore a superfluous one.

What a serendipity!

After posting above, I made a cursory search in Google and found a fantastic etymological resource for all slavic languages:

It's nice when you happen to discover a treasure trove in a thread of events which started because you bothered yourself to look up a useless, rare and arcane word, isn't it?

September 3:

Chapters 13,14 (45 pages:285-329).

Some words I found and learned there, worth mentioning:

потака́ть = (impf.) to indulge
наважде́ние = delusion; hallucination
наи́тие = (divine) inspiration
по наитию = intuitively

Well, at least now you know some hidden gem in Russian literature:) (I doubt he is much discussed in Slavic departments)

As for rare words, I have a bunch of them under my belt, since I learn languages mainly for reading 'high brow' literature.

September 5:

Today I've started reading and listening "Дочь Фараона", a translation to Russian of "Eine ägyptische Königstochter", a historical romance written by german egyptologist Georg Ebers (1837-1898) and firstly published in 1864.

Read and listened chapters 1,2,3,4,5,6 (84 pages: 1-84).

As I see from your reading lists, the deeper into the past the better.
If so, you may like the first book of Dmitry Merezhkovsky's trilogy - the one set in VI c. AD, Julian the Apostate (Дмитрий Мережковский, "Юлиан Отступник") - it might seem almost too close to our days after diving into Egypt :)

Мережковский is Брюсов's contemporary and, as Брюсов, also wrote some poetry but is more known for his novels and religious studies. They both belong to the so-called Silver Age in Russian (pre-Soviet) culture, and they knew each other - everyone did!

The text (as all the other books of your choice) is under creative commons license, so the only question is, whether or not it has been recorded as audio.

Just_a_visitor,

Спасибо вам за то, что Вы мне напомнили о Мережковском!
Роман "Юлиан Отступник" читать и мне пришло в голову когда-то. Тогда скачал его текст, a никакой аудиокниги его не удалось достать. Однако, к моему удивлению, сегодня я обнаружил, что y этого романа две (!) аудиокниги имеется в продаже на сайте Литрес. Итак, буду читать его.
