Re: Japanese - Finish the Darn Textbook!

Postby księżycowy » Thu Mar 04, 2021 9:37 pm

March 4th
Today at work I had basically the whole day to myself and my whims, so I used some of the time to do some listening exercises with the drills (B & C) from Lesson 5. I was looking to comprehend what was said, and for the most part I think I did. A few times I needed to pause the tape and think about it for a minute, and twice I had to look at the drill in the book (there's also a tape-script in the back, but I made a point not to look at it). This was especially good, given that everyone else was going about their business as usual, and it was a bit distracting around me at times. :P

Other than that, I did the next Pimsleur Unit, and got caught up on Anki (both my MnN deck, and my kanji deck). Quite productive, if I do say so myself!

March 5-7
I got the second dose of the vaccine on that Friday after work and didn't get any time to do any language study. On Saturday and Sunday (and even a bit into Monday) I was having some side effects (like I had a mild case of the flu), so I also didn't get any language study done.

March 8
I did Pimsleur for ~25 minutes in the car on the way home, and I also listened to the dialogues from Lessons 4 & 5 at work for listening comprehension. I had a few distractions and such, but I was able to have a fruitful session regardless.

March 9
Today was a bit draining, so I just caught up on Anki. I might watch an odd Youtube video or something, but otherwise I'm not planning to do much else.

So, I've been doing plenty of Pimsleur. I've made it up to Unit 9, but I definitely need to take another pass at that particular unit. :P

Otherwise, I'm still making progress, which is excellent. I even started reading relevant entries in the Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar. I can easily get lost in that book.

I'm honestly not sure if I'll go back to making goals and posting their progress, or if I'd rather keep a log of just whatever I've done any particular day. I'll play around with that idea.

More to come!

I'll readily admit that I lost some steam this past week. I still did some study (mostly of my Anki deck), but nothing particularly substantial. I also think I should just accept that one lesson from MnN is plenty for a given week. Especially given my non-language workload and energy reserves.

Time to refill the engine with some water, and build up that steam!

Re: Japanese - Finish the Darn Textbook!

I can't help but post at least every few days. :P

So far this week I have realized I forgot to do the audio exercises at the end of Lesson 5, so I caught up on those (I still have to grade them, and see how I did.) I also have started Pimsleur up again, and have completed the 80%+ threshold on Unit 9, so today after work I will continue on with Unit 10. I haven't been doing Anki every day, but I have done it at least....once? in the last few days.

I've also started working through the Kodansha Kanji Learner's Course, mostly for the keywords, rather than anything else. It should be interesting moving forward, given that I also intend to start up the Kanji materials that go with MnN this week. (I think I forgot to add those to my goals, so I will do so if necessary). I'm thinking, so that I don't get too kanji crazy, I will use the KKLC as a way to get familiar with kanji (and a headstart on ones not introduced in the MnN materials, whether that is yet, or at all). I will mostly leave the heavy lifting for the MnN kanji materials, so that I can learn pronunciations (via actual vocabulary from the lessons) and solidify the mean(s).

More in a few days!

So, it's been a little while yet again. I must admit that the fact that the Japanese border is closed to foreigners has been a huge blow to my will to continue studying the language. Or any language really. It seemly put my plans on the chopping block.

But then I thought, this might actually give me the time to, I don't know, actually learn some of the language and have a half way decent foundation in it before actually leaving (so long as COVID cooperates). :P So I'm trying to get my head back in the game. Which, admittedly is going slower than I'd like, but as long as I'm moving forward, that's what counts.

So I've been working on my Anki deck, Pimsleur and the beginning of Lesson 6 in MnN for the last few days.

Today I got some sad news. One of my old professors, who was like a mentor to me, died today. And an extended family member has gotten cancer. So I think I'm going to do my best to process the news, and hope to work on some more Japanese this weekend (whether that starts tomorrow or Sunday).

More to come. With hopefully better news. :)
