Egoplant's Log - Japanese & Chinese

Postby egoplant » Wed Nov 25, 2015 11:37 pm

I started learning Chinese a few days ago, as well as Japanese 3 years ago. This isn't going to be a very interesting log, it will just be me posting the stats from an app I installed once a week, tracking how many hours I put in split into three categories: Reading, Listening & Studying. It's basically just to give me motivation. I'll post the first week next Wednesday.

Week #1

Reading: 11 hours 15 minutes
Listening: 6 hours 25 minutes
Studying: 4 hours 7 minutes
-
Total: 21 hours 28 minutes

---

I did embarrassing little for my first week even though this thread was supposed to give me motivation. Well hopefully seeing these results motivates me to take this seriously next week.

Week #2

Reading: 14 hours 33 minutes
Listening: 24 hours 11 minutes
Studying: 2 hours 7 minutes
-
Total: 40 hours 51 minutes

---

Definitely better than last week, but I still think I can do better if I could find the motivation. On paper 3 hours of reading, 3 hours of listening, 30-60 minutes of studying would be a decent pace, but doing that every single day is difficult. I will try to do better next week. :)

I'm going to stop this log. I've noticed it's sort of ruining my learning, I have to constantly keep track here and there even if it's only a few minutes, and it seems sort of arbitrary in a way, like if I'm listening to something in the background does that count? Things like this has actually made my studying suffer so I'm just going to stop. It was a short lived experiment that I think didn't work out. I thought it would give me motivation to see my progress, but it actually killed my motivation by making it too complex.

I understand you very well, it's the same for me, that's why I've never logged the hours I study. It becomes a burden, not a motivational help. However, you can still keep this log for other purposes. For example, talk about what you're reading or what you're listening to, what is easy, what is difficult. Other language learners might find your posts interesting and might give you some advice if you need it.

40 hours a week is a lot. Good luck!

You can consider participating in our 6 Week Challenges and log your study time only during the 6 weeks that the Challenge is on. That way, you still have an idea how much time you tend to study, can use the stats for an additional purpose, and can relax other times.
